This is possibly the best lens I own for my Canon EOS 30D DSLR. (And for £65 what a bargain!)
This is an incredibly light lens, and as I understand it, it is made entirely from plastic. It might feel a little too light, but believe me, it's a well constructed lens which yields fabulous results. It's also very cheap in comparison to other prime lenses, and I would consider it much better value for money than the 50mm f/1.4
As a prime lens, 50mm fixed, f/1.8 it can be used in relatively low light without a flash since it lets so much light through to the camera... Shorter exposure times means your subject has less time to move. It also has a pretty shallow depth of field, so a perfectly focussed subject can have a wonderfully blurred background.
The tiny box this comes in contains the lens, front and rear caps, and a small leaflet on the lens properties (which I immediately threw in the bin).
It's a very simple lens to use - fit it to your camera, and select either Manual Focus (MF) or Auto Focus (AF) using the switch on the lens, and do whatever magic you do with your camera. Remember that composition of the photograph may be a little more work than with a zoomable telephoto lens - you might have to walk a bit, or get your subjects to move to compose the perfect shot!
I find this lens is particularly well suited for portrait work, although I have taken a few landscape shots with it too. I went out and bought this so I could take pictures at a family wedding. It was absolutely worth it, and I would happily recommend this lens to any Canon digital SLR camera user.
Words really cannot describe the effects this lens can produce, you need to see them for yourself. Try one out in a shop, borrow one from a friend, or just go out and buy one, you'll not regret it!

Nice review but as a professional portrait photographer I can tell you this is not a good lens for portraits if you want to give your subject the best possible chance of looking good. The sweet spot for portraits is between 85 and 100mm, that way your subject gets room to breath and there is no odd facial shaping that comes with wider angle lenses.

provides a high-performance for a standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The colour balance is excellent for a standard lens. Suitable for use with Canon Digital SLR cameras.

is a must for every D-SLR photo enthusiast. A lens hood is primarily designed to avoid unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. The bayonet connection makes attaching the lens hood to your lens very simple. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
