Advantages cheap, small and very impressive quality
Disadvantages some may find the focussing ring a bit annoying
Having broken the kit lens for my Canon 1000D camera I was looking for a normal (35-70mm) lens for a good price. Although there were cheaper lenses that fit my specifications available I was particularly drawn to this one because it is a Canon lens and I felt assured that it was likely to be of reasonable quality. That being said, I wasn't expecting any miracles because at that price, who would?
I purchased this lens about a week ago now and have since experimented with it in various conditions and I have been consistently impressed by the quality of the images it produces. The lens is small and light which makes it easy to pack into my camera case without having to detach it from the main body of the camera all the time which, if you're like me, is a blessing.I have read in a number of reviews that people have been dissatisfied by the feel of the lens, suggesting that it feels a little cheap and plasticy. I have to disagree with this because although the lens is made almost entirely of plastic it feels perfectly strong and I have no concerns that it is perfectly sturdy enough for normal use. I would even argue that the fact that it's made out of plastic is a bonus as it makes it very light which, apart from anything else, eases my fears about cracking the body of the camera.
One potential disadvantage to this lens is that the focussing ring is very small and it feels a little bit awkwardly placed. That being said, within 10 minutes of using the lens I had become accustomed to the placement of the ring and I really can't imagine it causing anyone much trouble. All in all I would highly recommend this lens. I cannot emphasise enough how amazing value it is - it would still have been a fantastic purchase had it been £50+ more expensive.
