Canon Lens cap

First impressions

I have owned a few brands of camera over the years. There were a few before digital cameras came along, though with the digital cameras I have tended to stick to the Canon brand. This is a brand I am now familiar with, and with all the accessories you accumulate it can discourage you to try other brands. When you start buying the camera bodies and then add your own lenses you know that you are starting to get into an expensive game. Fortunately with these lenses you can use them with a few cameras, though they are very expensive and must be taken care of.

The best way to ensure your lenses are kept in top condition is to handle them with care, but also to store them properly. Storing lenses you are not currently using in a purpose-made padded bag is wise, but you must also use a lens cap to protect the lens from dust and dirt. Both ends of the lens can be protected with caps, and I stick to the brand I am using. I have Canon lens caps and plenty of them, and they match my Canon lenses.

My experience

There are a number of brands of lens cap on the market. The cost doesn’t vary a lot, so you are best just to stick to the brand of lens you have and use their caps. It can seem like a waste of money because they will not improve the shot quality, but in the long term they will save you a fortune as you will not have to replace lenses because they are scratched, and instead you will replace your lenses as they become dated, and they will have a far greater secondhand value as they will be scratch-free!

This Canon lens cap is made from plastic but offers good protection from scratches. Lens caps like this will not protect your lenses if you drop them, as they could just as easily smash if you make a habit of this.

I bought this lens cap for the Canon EF 8-15mm Fisheye lens. This is a very specialist lens and if understand what effect the fisheye lens creates and how it is designed with its curvature you will understand how important it can be to protect the lens, moreso than most other lenses as it is likelier to become scratched due to the convex lens.

This may not be an ultra modern piece of kit, but these lens caps are very useful, and I do not see many professional photographers without them. Professionals can carry half a dozen diferent lenses around with them, and I have seen them use multiple cameras to take the same shots. Looking after all those lenses and preventing them from getting scratched must be a nightmare, and when not in use they will use the lens caps to take care of these lenses that can easily cost many hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Price and availability

The Canon lens caps come lenses when you purchase them. Buying additional or replacement caps can be costly, though to save your lenses from scratches £5 to £15 seems a fair price to pay. Have spares to hand, buying from eBay, though if you are desperate you can always choose a range of other retailers and expect prompt delivery.

Final thoughts

I have owned a number of Canon cameras over the years, and although this is a very basic item it will last for many years and can be transferred from lens to lens so long as the size is the same. Lenses are generally very expensive, so protecting them from scratches is essential to ensure a crystal clear image, and ensure that they last much longer than without protecting them from damage. If you store your lenses in a bag then you may well regret not using one of these caps.
