Generally, I need to take a deep breath when it comes to technology so when buying this five years ago I asked for one that was simple to use. In practice it has met this requirement. I have never used the viewfinder preferring to open the LCD screen, which makes it simple to see what is being recorded. Although supplied with a shoulder strap I did not feel the camera would be adequately protected so purchased a leather carrying case (with pocket for spare battery and film). The Cannon grip belt is very comfortable when holding the camera to film. Pressing a button starts, stops and pauses the process and the zoom moves smoothly by thumb. It can therefore be operated effortlessly with one hand. The finished recordings are always sharp - sound quality has never been an issue (see later). I always power by battery when recording. There is a knack required in getting the battery to click into place. It is also essential to buy a spare - otherwise guess which mountain you'll be up when the power has discharged. On holiday I would always recharge overnight. Loading the tape requires patience. Once the compartment is opened it more or less does-it-itself but rather like a midwife tells you when to push but not to press! The screen will indicate if a 'write protected' cassette has been inserted. Amongst included accessories is a good length power cord but both the connection points (for this and for linking to a personal computer) are hidden under flaps that need respect because they appear quite flimsy. They are still in tact. Films can be played back from camera to TV screen and edited to VCR. When purchased the retailer included Presto Video Works software. This I used to computer edit and add musical backing tracks. Resulting short films were then transferred back via camera to videotape. It is during these processes that the number of wires and handbook became confusing. Eventually I wrote out my own instructions to avoid flipping between pages. Using the camera's remote also proved awkward, as it has to be pointing towards the camera front to have any effect. I have since changed computer operating system. Still photos can be taken with the MV400i via a photo button on the top but I find it better to just record and then capture one frame with Windows XP camera wizard. This appears more straightforward than the process required by a digital stills camera purchased later. It is how I insert photos to ebay listings. After five years and much use this product still functions well and I believe its price has dropped considerably. Now the only apparent change is that whilst written messages appearing on the LCD screen are clear, symbols are more difficult to identify - but that could be my eyes.
Advantages: Compact, well made. Disadvantages: Very poor low light performance, black and white view finder
I was looking forward to receiving this camcorder to replace a CanonMV400i. I thought that being a newer model and carrying the Panasonic name the performance would be much better but I was very disappointed.
Having a black and white view finder is a waste of time as you have to use the colour monitor all the time which is a pain. The Canon, 3 years older, has a colour viewfinder and is in the same price bracket. My main reason for replacing the Canon was for an improvement filming in low light unfortunately the Panasonic was worse with a very noticeable multi coloured mushy grain ruining the picture. The colour night scope feature is totally unusable as any slight movement results in severe smearing of the picture, this only useable if both you and your subject remain absolutely still. Increasing the gain results in very jerky ...
Advantages: Excellent value for money Disadvantages: Low battery
If you love surprise packages, you'll love this!! This model of Digital Camcorder somehow manages to look bigger on screen than it actually is. Upon opening the box i was delighted to find a very compact camcorder! (This was the reason why i very nearly bought the Canon 250i)
The main difference between this camcorder and the 250i is the price, where the MV 750i is about £400-500 and the MVX250i ranges about £600-650. Notice the latter has an 'X' in its model number which means it is a 'Megapixel' camcorder; for normal consumers this simply means it has over 1024 million pixels whereas the 750i has 800,00 pixels on the CCD screen (the pivoting screen to look at instaed of looking through the viewfinder.) The 750i is about £150 cheaper with absolutely no difference in the picture quality! (I tested in the shops first.)

Advantages: Simple to use (point and shoot) Disadvantages: The camera "kit" (spare batteries, carrying case, casettes etc) cost a sizable % of the cost of the camera
I bought a CanonMV700 for £400 in March 2004 from Jessops and have had no issues with its usability - that is until 2 months back (Sept 2005). The camera (possibly the CCD) suddenly became faulty and was no longer able to "see". It could record sound and the blank screen and could play back recorded tapes, but that was all it could do. The problem started when I rang Canon customer service to arrange for its repair. Now, I had moved to the United States, and, I was naturally calling their American customer service #. What I was told by these customer service people is that Canon USA CANNOT REPAIR THE CAMCODER because it is a PAL system and they therefore don't store their spares (it seems they only store spares for NTSC camcoder that they sell in USA). And, I would have to arrange for the repairs with Canon UK - they wouldn't even ...
