I bought this camcorder for my mum, she had an old JVC which has been broken years ago but I knew she always enjoyed shooting family gatherings. I searched all the net and the shops for a simple point and shoot yet quality camcorder and that's I came up with. New high-performance lens and CCDs Each model uses a totally new 1/6-inch 800,000-pixel CCD, to produce even higher resolution movies. The range also incorporates the MACS (Multi Architecture Camera System) to optimise best quality image settings for movies and stills, depending on whether displayed on TV, PC, or printed via the Direct Print function (no PC is needed).

Digital effect and digital fade A variety of digital effects and fading functions are included for on-camera video editing. These effects previously had to be done on a PC. Effects include colours, ball, mirror, cube and wave while digital fade includes flip, tide, puzzle and beam effects.
Audio Dubbing For those wanting to produce personalized films, the MV600 camcorder features an Audio Dubbing function. With this it is possible to create or replace commentary or music to footage, thereby enhancing or explaining the images.
Multi-image Screen The MV600 includes a multi-image screen, which allows images to be played back on the LCD panel divided into 4,9 or 16 separate screens. Alternatively the camera can display a series of images in sequence. To select the images to be displayed, users can either make a manual choice or use one of the preprogrammed transition speeds: fast, moderate or slow.
DV Messenger Additionally, the new range double as web cams using Canon’s DV Messenger software, which allows you to take full advantage of Microsoft Windows XP’s Messenger program. Simply connect the camcorder to the computer’s IEEE1394 terminal to create a video conferencing studio, zoom in for a closer look, adjust focus and control the camcorder’s playback functions through your computer.
18x Optical Zoom / 360x Digital Zoom
Now, this is great, of course you can't keep the image still when you are in 360x, you'll need a tripod for that. But 18x is just suberb.
1/6" CCD 800K
2.5" Colour LCD screen / colour viewfinder
Don't know if you'd need anything bigger, just right size. I liked colour wievfinder, looks better and more real.
Electronic Image Stabiliser
Works allright, I would expect it to be better but does make difference.
Night Mode
It does shoot at very very low light, even in the dark but still it's better to have an extra light source I think, at the end all it does to open the shutter longer and this obviously causes slow motion pictures. Not nice. Might be useful if you want to shoot moonlight though, wont move very fast.
7 Programmed Auto Exposure Mode
Not to confuse mum, I didn't set up these but I think they are very useful.
Audio Dubbing
DV out (IEEE1394 compatible)
May be a DV in will be added to basic models one day. For the non-techies this is the way you send your pictures to PC to edit. Then you can keep them on PC, write them on CD or DVD it's up to you. A DV in will enable you to record the edited version back on tape. Ah, and camcorder won't come with IEEE1394/ firewire/ ilink cable or card so if you fancy editing your homevideos you'll need a card and cable. We bought recently one for £22 both.
Manual Focus
Nice to have as an option.
Digital Effects (Rec & Play)
Not very useful if you ask me but yeah, why not. Fun.
Photo Mode
Now, this is a low spec camcorder, not a digital camera. So one might be dissapointed by the quality of the pictures although it's better than automatic 35mm.
Accessory Shoe
This is a cold shoe, which is a dissapointment for some people.(not connected to the camcorder battery, means you need a light with own batteries) It didn't matter for us much but could be a concern.
Built In Charger
Again, if you are shooting day and night it would be nicer to have a non built in charger.
Compact Lithium-Ion Battery
The battery that comes with machine lasts about 45 min without using LCD screen. So you do need an extra battery. I got the longest lasting one (allegedly 10 hours but I don't know exactly how long it lasted for us), you pay a lot extra for that even the no name ones are about £60. A bit of a bore but same for every camcorder or digital camera.
Whatelse, looks fab, a bit feminine mind you not all metallic grey. Nice big buttons, easy to use. Shop around, there are good deals on the market. If you expect a lot, don't buy this camera it might dissapoint you=, it's a basic entry level machine. But if you are not techy, if you are scared of machines, gonna have a baby soon and don't have much time for this sort of thing, yeah, why not. Don't forget to go and play with camcorders in Dixons or Jessops or whatever to see the feeling.
Advantages: Compact and handy Disadvantages: None off the top of my head

It has great optical and digital zoom so it is able to film objects far away. It also has gadgets such as night vision and play back.
It is easy to link to both Televison and computer to watch or edit those home movies.
You can buy add on accsessories that boost the comeras effect. These include; microphones, ...

This is a lovely little camcorder, easy to handle, easy to carry. It will fit inside your bag, as long as its a sensible size.
Ideal for anyone being to take recordings. The sound is pretty basic, but adequate for home use.
The zoom can be quite noisy if you don't control it gently, but other than that, no problems.
It is even good in the evening, it adjusts itself to night time filming and the results are not great, but pretty good.
It is easy ... ...and it does fit on to most tripod fittings.
Its really great for family gatherings or outings, although I am wanting to use it to shoot footage to be edited. The disadvantage is that it uses DV tapes, and so can't be downloaded to the computer straight from the tape...at least I don't think it can be used like that.
My only problem is getting my computer to recognise the camcorder, we have tried everything, and yes, we did load the software.

During my maternity leave a year ago, I was able to research the many Camcorders that were available and within my budget.
This was widely available and so prices varied wildly. I got mine for a little over 200 pounds!
The reasons I plumped for it were that it had relatively few bells and whistles, but has handy features for point and shooters like me. My subject was mainly going to be my new baby and I wasn't bothered about effects, taking still ... ...to read the essential sections and once the battery was powered up, I was able to shoot, replay and fiddle about really easily.
It shoots brilliantly in daylight and adequately in poor light and has a night vision feature that I have never used. It does have effects, but after the inital fun with them, we haven't bothered.
My only complaints are that battery life is short (sbout 45 mins, but that is about average and I did buy a larger battery ...

I was looking for a simple entry level camcorder to be able to take on holiday to america that would mean I wouldnt need to spend hours looking at the handbook or fiddling around experimenting with it. - I certainly had that with this great camcorder. I was literally able to take it out of the box, read a few pages about setting it up and I was away. I had never used a camcorder before but it was so simple a child could use it. It has a very clear ... ...is a bright day and you cannot see it clearly. It has a zoom button on the top which is very easy to use but beware of letting it go quickly as you will get an annoying click sound on the video when you play it back which you dont notice at the time. It is lightweight and easy to hold with all the buttons in an easy to reach place yet is robust and well built.

...have with the MV600. Firstly Canon claims the standard battery supplied (BP-508)has a life of 75-100 mins depending on conditions and which viewfinder/screen you use. The actual battery life is more 35-60 mins, so a spare battery is essential. The MV600 charging method is via the camera itself so you will have to buy a seperate charger (charging takes around 110mins for the BP-08)if you want to film while your spare battery is charging. Secondly ... ...zoom switch is spring loaded to return the switch to the center position. If you release the switch during zooming the switch swings back to the normal position under tension and produces a rather loud tap sound each time it happens. As the MV600 can record in 16bit quality this sounds terrible on video! I now keep my finger on the zoom switch and guide it back into its center position (no tapping). Apart from these 2 small grumbles, I have found ...

This is the first camera I have had the wherewithal to buy, whilst I had been searching a little higher in the canon range I decided on a safety first item. This camera in all the reviews seemed like a nice cheap but effective utility to practice on before stepping up to the semi-professional market. As a film student I use larger and far more expensive professional equipment, where the lens is worth considerably more than the entire cost of my little MV600i. Playing around with cameras at the top end of the market has shown me what kind of image can be captured and its similarity to broadcast quality film. I looked around for months for a camera that would do the novice things I asked of it. My desires were a good optical zoom,
user friendly menus, mini DV tape, image stabilizer and the ability to record videos from my video player.
The MV600i had all that and more. It has features I can't even begin to play with yet.......
Having owned it now for around 6 months I am truly delighted with it's smooth operation, easy menu and it's ability to follow sport action without taking forever to re-focus. It's only downfall is the wind is so easily picked up by the mic but hopefully a plug in mic will help with this.
It's an attractive camera to add to all that, not as small as some but too small and it would be easy to shake it beyond the control of the image stabilizer so I like that it feels really neat in my hand and doesn't wiegh too much ...
