When I was looking for a camcorder I looked at the whole Canon MV7xxx range from the MV750i right down to this one. All through the range they use the same sensors to record the image (so same image quality) but the higher models have lots of features that I just don't need. For example, I don't need the camcorder to take photo's and store them on an SD card, especially as they are at around 1Mega pixel anyway. Absolutely pointless, especially when I have a decent digital camera anyway! DV in and out, could be useful for some, however I brought a device last year (VideOH by Adaptec) that allows me to connect my VCR to my PC to record VHS digitally if necessary. The MV700 has low light setting, the MV750i goes one better and a super night mode. Another unneccessary feature as low light is adequate. Slowing the shutter down any further is going to make filming moving objects very difficuly.
My only real gripe is that it did not come with a fire wire lead, and for those of you with PC that do not have firewire as standard you will have to buy and PCI adapter to plug into your PC so you can use this camcorder as it does not come with USB connectivity.
It does not come with a remote control. Before I brought the camera I wondered if this was going to be a problem so I asked some of my colleague who already have camcorders what they think of the remotes that came with theirs. All of them said they never used it, my mind was put at ease! From what I could make out the remote would only be used when playing back through a TV. AS I intend to put my footage to DVD after editing I figured I wouldn't be boring poeple with a whole days unedited footage to watch!
The camcorder is very easy to use, I defy anyone to get confused with it! There is a little switch on the back which puts it into advanced mode. This enables some extra menu's to be activated so things such a low light settings, sport scenes etc, can be utilised. Along with all the single sensor camcorders the image quality is only so good, but it is good compared with other single sensor camcorders. If you want superb image quality get one of the 3 sensor cameras, which are now coming down in price.
I brought the camera for £230 from eBuyer.com, which I think is a bargain considering the MV750i can be brought for £350, but has lots of feature that I just do not need.
