Because our old analogue Camcorder was dying gracefully we found ourselves standing in Comet looking at an array of digital camcorders. How to choose? No knowing a thing about these new fangled things and not wanting to make the wrong choice we asked for assistance.
Now we are not illiterate, but we know little of video editing and special effects. We wanted a camera that was easy to use and gave good quality. This was to be for holiday and home use only and there was little point in paying for something that had a host of features that were no good to us. We bought the Canon MV700i Digital Video Camcorder.

The camera: measuring 5 ¾” long by 3 3/4 “ deep. Instruction Manuals: These look a little daunting but the larger of the two is for foreign users (Italian, Deutsch and French), the smaller being in English. AC Power Adaptor: enabling you to run the camera from mains voltage. Lens Cap & Cord Lithium button battery: back up for date and time settings. Shoulder Strap Battery Pack: This is the smallest available, giving a typical recording time of 45 minutes using the LCD display. Stereo/Video cable: which allows you to play your recording back through your television or video. Scart Adaptor: for your video
The camera is very sleek, weighs only 1 lb 3 oz without the battery, the battery adds another 2 oz. It fits comfortably into your hand and the buttons are simple to use. On the side of the camera you have Record search buttons (forward and reverse wind), focus and night mode. These four buttons double up when you are playing back your video as normal search buttons, play and stop. On opening out the LCD display you will find 5 more buttons as follows:
Digital Effects: 1. Fade in and out effects to your film, there are 9 to choose from. 2. Picture effects to your recording, i.e. Sepia, mirror image, 9 to choose from. 3. Multi image screen, to capture moving subjects and allows up to 16 shots on one screen.
On/Off used in conjunction with digital effects to turn effects on and off as required.
Self timer/Data Code: Self timer allows a 10 second countdown timer and Data code allows you to view the settings you currently have on the camera
AE Shift/end search allows you to change the auto exposure and also allows you to locate the end of the last recorded scene.
The LCD screen measures 1 ½” deep by 2” wide, is wonderfully clear (112,000 pixels), colours being particularly bright.
At the back of the unit you have the programme button, on off switch (which is small, green and fiddly) and the record button, exactly where you want it, right under your thumb when the camera is held properly. These last two buttons are attached to a switch that toggles between Off, Camera (for recording) and Play (for playback).
On the top of the unit is the view-finder, for those who prefer it, zoom and the photo button for those of you who want to use the camcorder to record still images. The quality of photos on this unit though, will not be as good as the average Digital Camera, it is just an added bonus to have the facility, if you need it.
The instruction manual is easy to follow and we had no difficulty in finding our way around what looked like, to us, a very scary piece of equipment.
The camera records on to digital video cassette tape, there is no option on this camera for a memory card, but recordings can be downloaded directly to normal video tape though the wire provided. If you wish to download your moving images to computer, for further editing you will need to purchase a DV cable. Check our computer first though to ensure you have the correct terminal for this connection. Still images can be downloaded to your computer using a simple USB cable.
How impressed where we?
Very. We played with the camera all evening testing its different functions and were more than pleased at now easy it was to use. One of the things we particularly liked was that the LCD screen could be turned 180 degrees, allowing you to video yourself and see what you are videoing at the same time. The zoom is excellent, and at its maximum zoom level the focus was still sharp and pleasing to the eye. It is so lightweight it can be easily carried in its pouch attached to your belt, so no fear of losing it, or leaving it anywhere. Picture quality was excellent as was the sound reproduction (stereo). Cannon are renowned for their lenses, one of the reasons that led us to this make, if their lenses are good enough for the Hubble Telescope, then they are good enough for us. All in all, a good quality unit which gives extremely good results and an affordable price.
Would we recommend it?
If like, you just want to point and shoot, yes definitely. If you want to add some zing to your recording effects can be added later from the camera, or if you want via an editing suite on your computer although this would have to be purchased separately. The DV cable retails at around £25, editing software prices will depend on what you want.
Disappointments
Only that the offer included a £70 free starter pack, ‘carrying case, extra battery and starter tape’, while stocks lasted. Unfortunately stocks had run out and we had to purchase our carrying case and tapes separately. The cost of the case and a pack of 10 tapes came to around £50 on top of the price of the unit, although we anticipate the tapes will last us for many years.
Cost - £369 for the camera (Comet) and £50 for the accessories
Advantages: It was a good, powerful, easy to use camera Disadvantages: Got manufacturer defect, Not very light weight
I bought Canon Power Shot A70 from US a year ago. Now I am in UK and one day suddenly found my Canon LCD is just showing some horizontal lines instead of any picture output. I was sooo disappointed with this. Tried a lot to fix it but nothing happened. I was then just surfing the web for any instruction to fix this problem when I found an Announcement in Canon USA and also Canon UK site that these A series and many other Canon product [Other Canon Product List: Digital IXUS II, Power Shot A300, Power Shot A70, MV600, MV650i, MV700i, MV5i, MV6iMC, Digital IXUS 400, Power Shot A40, Power Shot A95, Digital IXUS IIs, Power Shot A310, Power Shot A75, MV600i, MV690, MV730i, MV5iMC, Digital IXUS330, Digital IXUSV2, Power Shot A80, Power Shot S60,Digital IXUS V3, Power Shot A60, MV590, MV630i, MV700, MV750i, MV5, Digital IUS430, Digital IXUS 500 ...
Advantages: Simple to use (point and shoot) Disadvantages: The camera "kit" (spare batteries, carrying case, casettes etc) cost a sizable % of the cost of the camera
I bought a CanonMV700 for £400 in March 2004 from Jessops and have had no issues with its usability - that is until 2 months back (Sept 2005). The camera (possibly the CCD) suddenly became faulty and was no longer able to "see". It could record sound and the blank screen and could play back recorded tapes, but that was all it could do. The problem started when I rang Canon customer service to arrange for its repair. Now, I had moved to the United States, and, I was naturally calling their American customer service #. What I was told by these customer service people is that Canon USA CANNOT REPAIR THE CAMCODER because it is a PAL system and they therefore don't store their spares (it seems they only store spares for NTSC camcoder that they sell in USA). And, I would have to arrange for the repairs with Canon UK - they wouldn't even ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: somewhat helpful Review of Canon MV 700
Built on Canon's heritage of precision optics, the MV700i is not only effortless to use, it also has one of the highest zoom ranges of any camcorder in its class.Canon's engineers have always abided by the rule that technology has no purpose unless it can be put to good use. That is why the MV700i camcorder works straight out of the box. You won't need a PhD in systems theory to get started. No wading through complicated manuals - just turn it on and start shooting. The compact size and slim, ergonomic palm design feels as easy in the hand as it is to use. Buttons controlling all important features fall right beneath your fingertips, and you will be delighted by the wide proportions of the color LCD. Menu navigation is intuitive, uncomplicated and available in 8 languages.Sitting just beneath the surface to await the more adventurous is a generously specified camcorder with a raft of advanced features. A remarkably high ratio 18x optical / 360x combined zoom means you will never be too far from the action, while shooting in low light conditions is no problem thanks to 'Night Mode'.The camcorder includes Image Stabilization to keep the action steady without a tripod and a 1/6" high resolution CCD sensor for sharp images. The camera features DIGIC DV, a dedicated DV processor that raises the bar on image quality, recreating 'emotional' colors, tones and details to deliver images we humans love and remember: Redder apples, greener grass, bluer skies and warmer and more realistic skin tones. The MV700i includes an Analog/Digital converter and Analog In port to allow input of signals from analog devices such as video recorders to be converted in-camera and stored digitally to miniDV format. To add interest to video footage, Canon has included a host of creative digital effects. These include Art, Sepia, Monotone, Mosaic, Colors, Mirror, Ball, Cube and Wave. Scene transition options include Auto fade, Wipe fade, Flip fade, Corners fade, Tide fade, Puzzle fade, Beam fade, Zigzag fade and Jump fade.
