We did play around with this camera in the shop but due to the obvious noise in such surroundings, did not pick up on the noise that was from the camera.
Once home, we filmed our daughter. She was being quiet at the time. This coupled with quiet surroundings drew our attention to the noise coming from the camera.
The operation was loud. I'm no expert when it comes to video cameras but we're currently borrowing my mother in laws camera. This is an 8 (or so) year old digital camera. It makes no noise whatsoever and I would have expected technology to have improved in that time.
We connected the camera to the TV to play back our footage and much to our disappointment, the hum in the background was very noticeable. I REALLY wanted it to be OK. I really REALLY did, but we couldn't get over our disappointment and decided to take it back.
We were very lucky that we purchased from John Lewis because with no fault, we obviously weren't entitled to our money back. The best I had hoped for was an exchange. John Lewis were very kind and gave us a full refund.
I cannot comment on much more regarding this camera because of the short time I owned it. The only other points I can make are:
-The instuction manual was not user friendly.
-The camera does not have a 'stamina' mode like some of the Sony cameras and therefore the battery would not last as long. A larger capacity battery with case and mini DV tape come in a kit that you can buy for this camera for an £80 charge. Something to bear in mind when considering the total cost of this purchase.
We're now hunting round for another camera so please publish your experiences if you've found a good camcorder!
Advantages: Very compact unit, lots of features and very easy to use. A very nice camera for the price Disadvantages: To be honest, I cannot think of any disadvantages that spring to mind. I like the camera a lot
When looking to purchase a new digital camcorder I weighed up the facts that I had to hand.
My friend had just bought a sony camcorder and he had his fair share of problems with it, which all got sorted in the end, But who needs the head-ache. So I steered clear of sony.
I own 3 digital cameras which I have bought over the years and 2 of them are Canon, So I know that I was buying into a good quality brand that wouldn't let me down.
I have taken ... ...wouldnt be without it, the only reason I will probably upgrade it due to the fact that I would like one with a hard drive built in as mini-dv tapes can sometimes cost a fair bit !
All that leaves to be said is, Look out on ebay for a second hand one as these little babies are very robust (I know i've dropped mine twice). They have a loads of features and basically give excellent picture and sound quality ...

CanonMV850i - camcorder - Mini DV
The cannon MV850i video camcorder had been recommended to me and when I first brought it I had no idea about these types of video cameras, it appeared to be quite technical at first with many different settings and other high tech facilities,
If you have your reservations of all the different controls and settings then just switch to easy mode, point and shoot simplicity; just aim your cannon MV850i digital video camcorder and shoot.
Fasten your seat belts with the splendid canonMV850i video camcorder, sometimes we find it hard to choose and if you're an armature like me at buying photographic equipment, then choosing the chic MV850i is far-flung from a gamble.
The canonMV850i digital video camcorder is the BMW of the camcorder world with its Leap forward

With its 22x optical zoom, DiGIC DV and 'Easy' mode, the MV850i combines quality with point-and-shoot simplicity. Integrating 16: 9 widescreen mode, image stabilization and digital still capability. When designing the MV850i, Canon's engineers followed a simple maxim: for a technology to be worth having it must be both simple and useful. Features should only be available if they help you get that great shot, not cause you to miss it.Go straight to full automatic shooting by switching on 'Easy' mode and within seconds of turning on your new camcorder you'll be capturing quality footage. An ergonomic design provides fingertip access to all key functions via carefully positioned controls. Menu navigation is intuitive, uncomplicated and available in 8 languages. For a real cinemaphotographic effect, the MV850i has high-resolution 16: 9 mode for widescreen video. The 0.6x wide converter lens included in the box gives your images an even more panoramic feel.At just 5cm wide, the compact body fits snugly in the palm of a hand. Despite its small size, the MV850i features a generous 2.4" color LCD screen. No matter where you are, or in what lighting conditions you are shooting, you need never miss out on those important details. 60 years of lens development give rise to a powerful 22x optical zoom with exceptional contrast and clarity. A razor sharp 1/6" CCD delivers high fidelity images even at the strongest magnifications. Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) keeps your footage steady and makes hand held shooting rock-solid.You can even shoot when there is no light at all using Super Night mode with the built in White LED.Canon's DiGIC DV processor translates what the camcorder 'sees' into warm, vibrant tones that we love to watch. Grasses are greener, skies are bluer, skin tones warm and realistic. The camcorder's true digital still functionality begins with a mechanical shutter, for blur-free photos worthy of a spot in any album. The MV850i connects to any PictBridge compatible photo printer to create quality photo prints without the need to first download to PC. JPEGs and up to 60 minutes of Motion JPEG are stored direct on MMC or SD memory cards.
