--Starting Up and Recording-- Firstly you'll have to charge the battery, which'll probably take a bit longer than usual but is necessary if you don't want a defective battery later on which runs out about half as quickly as you'd expect during important moments.
Inserting a cassette is easy but automated, so you would need to be careful not to force the deck shut as it does it automatically.
You then adjust the 'dioptric lever' which is just to make the camera come into focus, and then you can do the normal stuff like adjusting the strap (which is comfortable for all hand sizes).
The cam only has 3 'modes' - Play(back), Off, Camera. It's as simple as that, and they are easy to access when you're holding it. There's a zoom lever on the top also.
You start recording by the pressing a small white button, and stop it the same way.
--Quality-- The quality of the recording is high, and the sound is better than I had expected, perhaps due to an external microphone. The colours are good, if a little pale at times.
--Battery Life and Charging-- The battery life varies depending on the battery you use from 60 mins to 2.5hours. This is based on the manual's 'typical average' with an average amount of zooming and powering on and off so could be up to half an hour more or less depending on how you're going to be using it.
Charging is simple, you just plug the power adapter into the camcorder and attach it to the mains. Charging time varies again depending on the battery pack you have, ranging from 95 mins for the BP-2L5 to 220mins for the BP-2L14.
--Extras-- There are 'special effect' extras such as normals like monochrome and sepia but also some 'faders' which are quite fun to add to your shots.
You can also record through your DVD recorder if you have no tapes, by plugging the camera in with a SCART lead or an RGB to the DVD.
The screen has the ability to rotate 360 so you can record yourself in front of the camera and see what you are actually recording which is a nice addition.
The lens cover is controlled by a simple on-off switch which is useful as it takes a bit less effort than an actual cover and gives you peace-of-mind that the lens won't get scratched whilst in your bag.
--Price-- We got ours for £120 but that was a very good deal - RRP can range massively from between £180 to £300-odd on Amazon - it's best to shop around a bit first. Tapes are fairly pricey considering they are only 60mins long - from £9-18 for a 3 pack.
--Summary-- I think considering how easy the camera is to use without a loss in quality the MV890 is well worth it - if you get the right price. It has very few controls so is relatively foolproof - but would be better if the batteries had a longer life.
Advantages: Small, Compact, Widescreen Disadvantages: No Photo Capture, No MiniDV Tape Or PC Cable Supplied, No Night Mode
I received this not long ago and I haven't regretted it. It's great for the money and it's really lightweight. Being able to film in widescreen is also a great advantage especially with it being so common place nowadays. It also has lots of shooting modes built in but I haven't tried them all yet.
There isn't much I can say bad about it either. It doesn't have a built in photo capture but from what I've read these images aren't very good quality. ... ...to pay more for that and the battery supplied does not last very long. But you can pick up better third-party ones for less than £6 each!
Also if you want a camera with an infra-red night mode this does not include it. The night mode should not be confused with an infra-red light.
Other than that I think its a great buy and highly recommend it! ...

Advantages: Simple. Disadvantages: Not great looking.
The Canon MV 890 is a nice, little and easy to use camcorder for either beginners or somebody who needs a cheap camcorder. Both light weight and easy to operate I often take this camecorder with me when looking at filming locations before shooting the actual footage in better quality. Although it looks O.K from some angles, the side in which you load the mini DV is a zone of cheap plastic nightmares. Besides that there isnt anything to complain about, ...

...very little spare cash. The Canon MV 890 was the cheapest, although I did have to purchase the bag and tapes seperately. I charged it immediately and used it for the first time that evening. After reading through the easy to follow instructions, I familiarised myself and found this very simple (my 5 yr old would probably have minimal trouble working it). Overall, it's not a bad little camera but if I had had an extra £50.00 I would have got a much ...
