The quality of your prints will be very affected by the grade of paper that you choose. I have found that Canon Paper Pro gives the best results and the next grade down (super glossy) is good for the sizes that Paper Pro does not come in. I have recently set up a business as an equine event photographer and after various glitches from professional printing companies, decided to print my own pictures.
I use Canon digital cameras and decided to go with a Canon printer, both on recommendation and because you often seem to get the best results by using the same brand for a whole process.
Anyway, I had a look at some prints from a Pro9000 and was completely blown away by the quality of them. I bought one and am very glad that I did.
The printer body is quite large as it can print up to A3 size which is a bit of a pain if you want to print at events etc. It is also quite clunky and looks a bit old fashioned, but then you hardly buy a printer for its appearence!
The Pro9000 comes with software and a manual to set it up, but we did find it a bit fiddly to get quite right. Do not be disappointed if your first prints look the wrong colour, you probably just need to rejig the settings and give the ink time to get around the system (don't know if it is just my machine but Photo Magenta seems slower to get going than the other inks).
Once set up, the printer is easy to use and the on screen instructions are easy to follow. As you can alter so many settings, there are quite a few choices to navigate around but you will soon find what works for you and then one sticks to them.
Printing appears quite slow but I think that that is due to the colour complexity and high resolution of today's digital prints. There is just a lot to print!
The Pro 9000 uses 8 ink cartridges, magenta, cyan, yellow, black and red, green, photo cyan and photo magenta which gives the high quality.
While I think that the cost of the printer is pretty good, you will get through a lot of ink if you print high resolution prints. Canon consumables are horribly expensive but you can get some good deals on ebay etc.

A bit of a stitch up maybe, but in my experience, sticking to the same brand does give the best results. Make sure that you alter the printer settings to match each type of paper that you use though or you will not see the benefit!

Canon ink cartridges, and I would suggest sticking with Canon, because they do a fabulous job are £8.99 each, so changing all 8 is not cheap.
Overall verdict
This printer produces bright, lifelike prints, but can be slow.
There are other A3 printers on the market that are cheaper and indeed quicker, but I am not sure there are any that gives you the finished article quite like this Canon. I would put up with the speed and ...
