Last September 2006, my husband finally decided to get us a good photo printer. We use to have HP color printer but it broke down quite sometime ago after we tried to use those re-fill ink sold in the market. We did a good amount of research before buying this Canon PIXMA iP6600D, and finally we have got a good deal at www.imagejoker.de, we bought it for €118. The only problem we had was a long delivery time. It took 1 month from the time we order until we got the printer. And finally, we got this incredible printer.
Well, I would say we were very impressed. I call it an All-Purpose Printer, why? It has so far gone beyond my expectations and I could not be any happier with the high quality and consistency of the prints at this point in time.
** What does the printer look like? ** Of course you can see the shape from the picture that it's 16 pounds weight and 7.7 by 16.9 by 12.3 inches, this printer require quite a portion of desk space, which expands another 8 inches in front for the flip-down 50-sheet output tray.
The LCD Monitor, which you can adjust to any convenient viewing angle The top panel is a tangle of buttons and lights. On the left, there's a power button and a status LED, a feed switch to exchange the paper source between the flip-up auto feeder and the flip-down cassette, a Save button to transfers images from a memory card to the computer, an Easy-PhotoPrint Startup button for browsing images on the memory card, and an error light. A red lamp illuminates each ink tank from below. You use the pad to navigate the menus, select photos, and choose the number of copies to print, scroll the view screen, or specify other print options. Each side of this pad are a menu button, a Back button to return to the previous screen, a Search key to sort photos on the memory card by date, and a Settings key that commands two screens of printing options. Choices range from print size to red-eye and noise reduction, as well as optimization features such as Face Brightening and contrast, hue, and saturation enhancement. On the right side there's a Trim button for cropping the displayed image, plus a pair of Zoom buttons, a Print button, and then, a stop/reset key for cancel all and start again.
At the right edge of the front panel there is the IrDA sensor, a PictBridge port, and a cover which covering the dual built-in memory card slots that accept all common digital camera memory-card formats.
** What Pixma IP6600D can do? ** Pixma IP6600D is quality, hi-tech and multipurpose. It is very quiet and efficient and prints photos with excellent results.
Easy to install although manuals are not good enough
I like all the cool features in this printer like double sided printing and the sketch feature. You can create two-sided photos or special photo albums with select Canon media when

duplex printing is enabled in its driver software. This automatic duplexing feature is very useful for me, I can print photo on both sides of a special two-sided photo paper which I use to for making Photo Album and Scrapbook. The Canon feeds the sheet out the front, then pulls it back in and prints on the reverse. So far nothing jammed when I duplexed, but there's a door on the back of the printer for disentangle sheets that may trapped in the paper path. The printer driver makes it easy to allow space for stapling any side of the sheet.
You can also print directly from a PictBridge (USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port) compatible digital camera or DV camcorder; unfortunately it is not compatible with our Olympus C-5060 but for sure it's compatible with the Canon Wireless Print Adapter WA-1N or you can also print from its dual slot memory card reader, that what we do since our C-5060 is not compatible. It has blue tooth and infrared detector (an IrDA v1.2) so that mobile phone users can print pictures directly from the printer, needs a blue tooth dongle though.
The extra-large 8.9 cm LCD monitor color viewer and control panel gives you a choice of creating a slide show with the shots filling the entire monitor with a good picture or viewing the shots one at a time with a somewhat lower quality and smaller shot. Using the latter, continuous clicking of the right or left arrows on the large navigation button allowed me to view each shot. When you see a shot that you want to print, you just press the Print button and you can evaluate and enhance the images on your compatible memory card before printing! To view photos in your memory card, just insert the card into one of the dual built-in memory card slots and select the images.
On top of all the PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer will automatically correct for red eye, improve sharpness and enhance the light values on your subjects' faces. Or, you can tune the image yourself using the easy control panel with options for Vivid Photo, Photo Optimizer Pro (for brightness and tonal corrections), Noise Reduction, Face Brightener (for backlit scenes), Image Optimizer (smoothes the jaggies), Brightness, Contrast, Color Hue, Effect (No Effects, Sepia, Simulate Illustration). The LCD is great for menu selection but it doesn't justice to the images. Somehow they look a lot better in the camera than they do on the printer LCD. Its advanced paper feeding provides you with several smart printing options. The dual paper path allows you to keep two different paper types always loaded and ready to print. As for us, we load the ordinary letter-size papers in an expandable cartridge built into the bottom of the printer and photo papers in flip-up vertical auto feeder tray. The reason why we load the papers in that order is that we have read lots of report of fine scratches in photos printed which printed from the flip-down cassette. So we load the photo paper in the flip-up auto feeder tray and the result is just beautiful prints. The flip-down cassette was not made for the heavier stock of photo paper, since paper in that tray has to go face down. the thicker photo paper has to be pulled around a roller, heavier stock is not appropriate for that. Each tray can accepts approximately 150 sheets of paper so when the same stock is loaded into both trays, You can also select continuous autofeed to switch from one tray to the other automatically for print jobs of up to 300 pages, isn't it cool?
Canon PIXMA iP6600D does print on to DVD/CD (Only when purchase in Europe). I have heard that the DVD/CD print option is not in the printer models that are sold in U.S
Now is the Ink! Pixma IP6600D use 6 ink cartridges compare to other printer which usually only 4. For this printer Canon added high intensity photo cyan and photo magenta to the conventional four inks, to increase the accuracy of color values. It a bit costly according to me but with the excellent result, it's worth it! First when we received the printer, the inks were only half-full maybe because manufactures don't make money on printers, they make it on inks *grins* With its new smart ink tanks, an LED lamp flashes when ink is running low and flashes even faster when nearing empty.
** How is the Printing Quality? ** For Photo printing, the quality of the images printing is unbelievable and high end convenience, even on 'standard' output. With FINE print head this printer can produce a beautiful photo lab quality 10 x 15 cm (4" x 6") borderless print in about 46 seconds smoothly without noise. We have printed photo on a Canon Photo Paper and on an Epson Photo Paper and surprisingly the result on the Epson paper somehow much better even though the Epson paper has just about the same specs as the Canon.
The ChromaLife100 system, produce long lasting, beautiful photos
Tips: As photos come out of the printer, they aren't fully dry yet, and if you let too many stack up, the ink on the bottom photos could be spoiled by compression. You may want to remove the photos as they come out of printer and lay them out to dry fully before stacking.
For Black and White Printing, the quality for B/W printing somehow is readable but I can not say it's perfect, it requires the crisp edges that you should insist on if you want to present a professional image. Output quality is likewise better for photos than for business applications. The text quality rating, at fair, is low even for an ink jet printer. Although with common fonts the text were easily readable at 5 points and smaller Some people said that we can adjust the icc/icm profiles to get a complete neutral image, but I have not tried it.
** Installation ** After checking the contents to make sure everything is there, we had to unbind the printer itself from bunch of its protective material and tape. Everything is clearly marked almost always in orange. It took us less than 15 minutes to set up the Canon Pixma iP6600D; we spent most of time removing protective shipping tape and installing the printhead and the six ink cartridges.

** Service and support of Canon Pixma iP6600D ** The Pixma iP6600D includes a one-year limited warranty and a broad range of telephone and online options. The printed manuals provided with the Canon Pixma iP6600D are insufficient, consisting of a Quick Start pamphlet, a 74-page Direct Printing Guide that provides orientation for the printer's menus and buttons, and a useful fold-out set of instructions. There's a more complete user guide on the installation CD. Canon's Web site includes a comprehensive set of FAQs and an interactive step-by-step troubleshooting wizard, along with duplicates of the CD manual if you lose your disc. If all else fails and you don't want to wait in a telephone queue, Canon offers an e-mail address for sending questions to live tech-support representatives.
After all, we think we have done a real good deal. With a reasonal price we have got this all purpose Photo Printer, it has got all you need from a printer. What more can you ask ?
