The software that came with this printer was generally pretty good however there is a lot of it, several different programs as it’s a multifunction device, printer/scanner/copier. Which i think could have been bundled into one well thought out program to save my desktop being flooded.
I bought this printer because it said it was specifically for photos, so that’s what i tried first, and the software was very good at getting me set up to print, it lets you turn on functions like colour correction and vivid colour (which i will come to later) and there is also a retouching section, similar (but not nearly as powerful) to adobe Photoshop.
-----| First Print |-----
I got some photo paper (not canons own, i had some HP paper lying around, still very high quality paper) and printed one of my home photos, i picked a photo with a dull background and a vivid foreground to try out how well it printed the colours. I was shocked at how awful it was. The edges looked like a cracked dried up desert. As shown in the link below.
Not too discouraged by this print i tried again with the same paper but a different setting, maybe i chose the wrong paper type (as the software has a million and one options that are quiet confusing as there is no description). Second try resulted in exactly the same.
Moving away from the photo paper i tried normal A4 paper, maybe this would be better as i had the wrong type of paper possibly? Well no the print was dull, completely wrong colour on some things, i compared a print from my HP laser printer to this printer and there was no comparison just shockingly bad quality.
Now i got some of my girlfriend’s photo paper to try that and see if it worked any better, no just even more disappointment, this time you couldn’t even make out a photo.
Note the ink is still wet the day after i printed this. Yes that is the same photograph as above but you can’t tell.
Now I’m no idiot, when i set this printer up i made perfectly clear that i didn’t touch any of the contacts on the ink cartridges and installed it exactly as instructed.
I also tried every paper with every setting to make sure that it wasn’t my mistake.
About the vivid photo option, as mentioned above, this destroyed the colours of my photograph it made the lights too light and the darks a different colour, so i didn’t use that again.
-----| Scanning |-----
Just to see if it worked after a disastrous print failure i tried the scanning option, it was ok scans at a decent size for most home use, but don’t expect to be getting brilliant scans from this.
My epson scanner is much better in every way so save you money and buy a separate scanner.
-----| Conclusion |-----
Terrible, unacceptable print quality, may have been a faulty printer or may have been my error (although i seriously doubt it as i took every precaution and tested it thoroughly).
OK scanner but if you require good quality high resolution scans buy a separate scanner something with a higher range dpi ability and proper software to do it.
After finding out how bad this printer was i looked to see if i could return it and found out i couldn’t as it had been opened and used so i didn’t get my money back.
A waste of money and time.
//// EDIT \\\\
Forgot to mention that this printer comes with no cable to connect it to the computer, so if you hope to do that your going to have to fork out more money to do it. I used one from my scanner to make it work.
Advantages: ease of use, one touch photocopying, silent mode, user friendly, does what it needs to do, normal Disadvantages: likes flat paper, high quality ink runs low quickly!
What a printer for the price! I have owned this MP160 for over a year now, and it has produced excellent photo's, and excellent documents! its scanner is excellent and is very good for text! i have noted that people have said its photo quality is bad, but every photo i have printed has come out perfect, although you do have to use the proper fine photo ink cartridge (about £5 more) as the normal cartridge is designed for document colours and normal ... ...very pretty, but for a low budget componant, the cost goes into the insides, and they really have done a good job!!! it has one touch photocopying, in colour, and one touch for black and white too... which is very quick! it has almost one touch scanning.... but a press of the button will open up the scan driver window on you pc desktop and give you a sizeable amount of options if you want to play around! the scan driver lets you crop easily and adjust ...

Advantages: Prints, Scans and Copies and isn't that expensive Disadvantages: Not top notch quality; slightly flimsy
=== Design ===
'''Looks & Feel''': Not the most attractive printer, but suitably executive looking and smart enough for any office. It is designed compactly, and so a lot of functions are crammed into not that much space. The scanner/photocopier part that lifts up is very flimsy and does not give the impression of a good, solid piece of equipment.
'''User Interface''': The button panel on the front of the printer is incredibly easy to operate. ... ..."photocopy in B&W". There's a "SCAN" button, and an LED display that shows how many pages there are left to print. Completely foolproof!
'''Size''': As I mentioned, it is relatively small and fairly light, and will fit on most coffee tables or even on most chairs. About the size of four shoeboxes.
=== Installation/Connecting to the PC ===
Fairly simple. You are provided with a CD, from which you install the basic software. Then you just need to ...

Advantages: Cheap, reasonable quality Disadvantages: medium speed
I recently purchased the canon mp160 as my old all in one printer was rubbish.It jammed all the time and was very slow! I thought that the printer was quite cheap as were the ink cartridges. i made the mistake before of buying a cheap printer but the cartidges were a rip off!
Installation was easy, as the quick guide and installation CD are very simple. It only took about 15 minutes to set everything up before I was on my way.

Advantages: Easy to install, easy to use Disadvantages: A seperate USB cable needs to be purchased
Ordered the canon mp160 as my old all in one printer was very old and no longer working effectively.
I liked the fact that this printer was reasonably inexpensive and the cartridges appear to be cheap.
Installing the printer is very easy. The quick guide and installation CD are very easy to use, and I had installed the printer to be computer in less than 10minutes.
The printer is not as fast as some, but as far as I can tell the print outs are ...

Advantages: easy to use, easy to change ink cartridges, good print quality, can print straight from carmera Disadvantages: a bit on the large side, not compatible with all camera's
This printer is easy to use from the start. From the setting up of the printer to the actual printing. The instruction manual and cd-rom are idiot proof. The cartridges are easy to install and readyly available to purchase (and not to expensive either).
The print quality is excellent even if you are using a low quality paper. Obviously the paper the better the quality. I use mine to print a lot of things for hand made cards and scrapbooking and ... ...This is an all round good printer/scanner/photo copier with lots of useful features such as printing straight from your camera and the 'fitting to page' button.
Excellent value for money and an ideal printer for families. Anyone can use it from kids doing school projects to mummy's that want to get a bit crafty!! ...
