Full review
I have had my new Canon Pixma MP520 about 3 weeks now and have used most of the facilities on it so feel able to do some kind of review of it. I did a lot of research before buying this printer and so far it has lived up to the expectations that I have of it.
The Basics
The Canon Pixma MP520 is a printer / scanner / copier all-in-one.
It has 4 ink cartridges - Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow - so if one colour runs out you only need to replace THAT colour - not like some printers where you have to replace the whole 'tricolor' cartridge.
Dimensions are 445 x 378 x 172mm. It is not small - but NEAT - things store away nicely. I have it in my living room and it doesn't look out of place once all the 'flaps' are put away.
There is a small crystal clear 5.0cm TFT screen which makes computer-free operation easy. Simply spin the Easy-Scroll Wheel to select options on the screen. You can view, select, edit and print - all at a touch.
There are 2 paper trays - one inside the front flip down flap that holds and one at the rear - a pull up flap.
Windows and Mac OS X compatible.
Setting up the printer was easy... although I was surprised that the software took 20 minutes to install!!
Photo Printing.
You can print from your computer or straight from your memory card -the front RH flap hides memory card slots.
It has a high 4800x1200dpi print resolution. - so photos look as good as out of a lab.
You can print a 10x15cm borderless photo in approx. 46 seconds in Standard Mode.
Document printing *Print documents at up to 30ppm in mono or 20ppm in colour.Copying
Copying Spec is up to 30cpm in mono or 20cpm in colour.
You can copy the exact area you want with frame erase, trimming and masking functions.
Scanning
2400dpi resolution delivers great colour scans.
Scan straight to PC, email or PDF. MP Navigator EX software makes every stage of operation easier, from image search to PDF document editing.
*I did find the scanner quite noisy - especially the 'carriage return'*What impressed me a lot about the scanning was that I could put 4 photos on the scanner bed and it would recognise that it was 4 separate photos and save them as such! A real time saver!
Overall - I'm really pleased with my purchase. As yet I haven't got any real complaints - and the cartridges are still full!!
Advantages: Great printing and Scanning Disadvantages: Ink cartridges 'die' - canon replaces defective cartridges
Great product, however disappointed that Canon engages in the false ink supply system, forcing unnecessary ink cartridge replacement.
I specifically chose Canon over Epson in an attempt to avoid this kind of issue. That choice came at a price, the MP520 was double the price of the Epson counterpart. I assumed that the money goes to pay for the product and full tanks of ink as opposed to the Epson limited ink offer, subsidized by future ink purchases ... ...working as well.
I thought that Canon did not engage in the false ink game such as Epson, Brother and the others, but apparently they do now.
Is it not time consumers boycott this seriously flawed business practice? How far does it have to go before anyone complains? ...
