Canon Pixma iP5200 Inkjet Printer

TOP FEATURES
1. Photo lab quality 4" x 6" borderless photo
2. Photo quality: max. 9600 x 2400dpi
3. ChromaLife100 system for long-lasting beautiful photos
4. Single Ink system
5.Direct photo printing from PictBridge compatible cameras

SETUP
Like most printers these days you only need to slip it out of the box install the software and plug the printer into the mains and your computer via USB. ONE THING TO NOTE is NO USB is included so you shoul buy another if you do not already have a spare. The manuel for setup is clear and easy to understand with excellent diagrams.

WHAT THIS PRINTER HAS
The ability to print outstanding quality borderless photos, shere simplicity of the printer is also outstanding all you need do is keep it in paper and ink and selsect the picture and paper type and it will do the rest.
The printer is so compact that it folds away to look stylish and compact - 444 x 309 x 160mm
Another nice feature is that it uses 4 print cartridges which is unusual for this size of printer so if it is running low on yellow ink you need only replace that colour as opposed to the whole colour cartridge.
Printing on CDs and DVDs is achieved perfectly using the tray and is simplicity itself.
Another useful option is auto power on and off where the printer powers up and down only when receiving information.
There is a port on the front of the printer for connecting Pictbridge compliant cameras and other devices so you can print without the PC.

QUALITY/SPEED
Print outs are perfect and printing is swift, printing an A4 6 million pixel picture on plain paper in about 15 - 20 seconds.
Photographic paper yields even betted results. Although better printers exist (ie with six cartridges as opposed to this cannon's 4 inks) quality is still high and I doubt anyone could really tell the difference (I certainly cant)
Black Text output is laser sharp. This is achieved using a separate black pigment ink. Even at low resolution text remains sharp. Printing again is fast at about 15 ppm at a business quality, I have a Lazer printer at work and I cannot tell the difference.
A nice feature is that the speed of the printer may be sacrificed for a bit of silence (not that it is loud under normal settings).

CARTRIDGES
the colour cartridges work out at £6 each and black £10 which is not so expensive and they last a long time so it's economical. It prints word docs in seconds and not that longer for photos. It also prints directly on CD's. Overall a brilliant printer.

SOFTWARE
The print driver is excellent on the PC i am affaid that I can't say for the Mac OS X. The driver for the printer and cannon software supports borderless printing, photo noise reduction for high ISO pictures, duplex printing, colour correction and some special effects.

TIPS
The ink cartridges last a reasonable time, but the software tells you they are running low before they run out I keep a couple in reserve so that I only need to replace them when the well runs dry so to speak.

I am told that this model will not work if you are using a usb extension card in a laptop

This is a great home printer for most everyday work it is more than capable of printing documents, Cd's, DVD's and labels. If you are only going to print photo's you should probably consider a 6 Ink printer (a printer designed for photos)
