I was given a Canon Powershot A200 for Hanukah, by my uncultured father - who I feared too inexperienced in Technology to have chosen wisely. I thanked him hugely, whilst acknowledging the camera’s disappointing lack of case, and the fact that it only just fitted in my pocket, and would be too bulky to carry around in such a manner. Getting to grips with the Camera, I realised that its function and quality was rather impressive, despite superficial imperfections.
The Camera features a fast F2.8 fixed focal length lens and a 2Megapixel CCD It also has a 4.0 digital Zoom function. This means the picture quality is excellent, and the camera’s colour recognition is more advanced than previous models.
The film function is gimmicky, but delightful. Short extracts of recorded footage can be created at 320 x 240 (for a maximum of 14 seconds), and160 x 120 (for a maximum of 30 seconds) Movies are shot at a frame rate of 20 fps. This function is surprisingly fun to use, and provides simple mementos of important (or not) occasions. Recording does rapidly use up battery power, but if only done briefly - can be efficient.
An important feature of the Camera is its stunning LCD screen, which is 1.3’x1’. It is extremely detailed, and its system of menus, photo selection and camera options is simple to use and elegant in design. When the shutter is closed the LCD goes onto viewing mode, where all pictures can be seen, deleted and zoomed into. When the shutter is open, it goes onto camera mode, where three focusing points are displayed. These enable even off centre subjects to be focused on, without having to move the camera to focus and re-frame the subject.
The Camera plugs into one’s computer through its USB port. It comes with several programs including ZoomBrowser XE. This is nice and simple, and can quickly extract the good quality images onto your computer and store them for later editing or printing.
One of the disadvantages of the Camera is battery life. It takes two standard AA batteries, which seems convenient, but they only last for about 25 mins altogether if you are taking pictures and film. This was frustrating for me at first; I often found myself in opportunities to take perfect pictures, but the battery was too flat to do so. However, you can still view all your images the your battery is too low to take pictures, but not completely wasted.
The solution to this is to buy a battery charger. These are often rather expensive – I had to pay £25 for a quick charging, Ni-hm battery charger, but it is most convenient, as the batteries are reusable!
The only other problems I have with the camera are its general size and appearance, and its lack of carry case. I wouldn’t consider myself a superficial person, but I think the Camera is only just small enough to be suitable for a modern camera, and its not as compact or graceful in design as other modern Digital Cameras I have seen. Also, the lack of carry case (although you can buy one separately) means that I have been using a glove or a sock to put it in for protection when taking it out!
The Canon Powershot A200 can be bought for approximately £145, which I think is a great price for a product of this standard. Any more than this and you’re just paying for a slender, snug-in-your-pocket sort of camera. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with spoiling yourself!
