----------------------- UPDATED UPDATE (grrrr): I uploaded some example pictures for you to see the quality of images produced by this camera. The pictures were taken by myself and are entirely un-editted (i.e. haven't been touched-up in a photo program). Click on the camera icon next to "Canon Powershot A300 - Amazing Value!" to see them. Unfortunately Ciao resizes the images so even their "XXL-View" is a pathetic 1/4 of the actual size. Leave me a message and I might be able to e-mail you a full resolution picture if you want (0.5 - 2 mb each). ------------------------
When I bought this camera from Amazon 2 years ago for £160, I thought it was great value. Now selling for £110 it's even cheaper but still competes well with the competition!
If you want a camera with optical zoom, then unfortunately this isn't the one for you. It is, however, the only real downside to this camera. Almost certainly the only reason I would upgrade it any time soon is to one with optical zoom now that I'm more into photography. Having said that, it should be a good camera for any beginner and quite a few intermediate-level photographers.
It's a 3.2 megapixel camera. That's true 3.2 megapixels, not the often stated interpolated image size.
** More General Camera Info: **
A short aside for people new to digital cameras or not technologically minded: When shopping for a camera, most of them will state clearly how many megapixels they are. Now ignore this number. Yes, completely ignore it. Read the specifications closely and only care about what it says the effective megapixels are (sometimes also referred to as the CCD megapixels). Many cameras give "bigger" pictures by just doing some simple tricks with the picture once it's taken (interpolation) - you can achieve this same trick (and with better quality) using most graphics programs on your computer. You simply can't put into a picture detail that's not there in the original - only having a good TRUE megapixel value can you get good detailed pictures. If you have a camera that has interpolation, just turn it off and save yourself some space on your memory card and battery power!
Now I said this camera is 3.2 megapixels. When I was trying to decide to go for a 2 or 3 megapixel camera, I looked at a lot of comparison shots on the web, and I found that 3 megapixels is just about the sweet-spot for budget photography. It captures lots of detail (2,048 x 1,536 pixels - that's probably twice the resolution your monitor is displaying). Of course, more megapixels are always nice, but then the cameras are also more expensive ;-)
** Back to the Powershot A300: **
You can find quite a few specifications for this camera and the manual over at Canon's camera site www.powershot.com
It runs on AA batteries. Get yourself some 2000+ mAh NiMH batteries and charger or you'll forever be running out of batteries. Battery life with good batteries is quite acceptable (depends on settings, LCD usage, etc - but I'd guess in the region of 100 full resolution pics - that's just a very rough guess).
The camera is small enough to slip into most pockets and all the controls are easily operated with one hand.
Some of the functions you'll need to read the manual to understand, as Canon have packed in a really impressive number of features and options for a camera of this budget.
The flash is adequate (and several modes for the flash even - the backfill one is quite useful). Macro and Infinte focus over-rides to give more control of what you focus on. You can take pictures as close as 20 cm from the subject, so this camera can give some really stunningly vivid and detailed shots of flowers and even larger insects. One really nice feature when focusing is that it shows you (with up to 5 green boxes) approximately which part of the image the camera is auto-focusing on: This let's you know that the camera has in focus what you're trying to take a picture of, even if it's not in the centre of the scene. There's an optical viewfinder, but I almost invariably use the LCD as it gives a more accurate representation of the finished photo. Start-up time of the camera is good (barely 3 seconds including sliding back the lens cover), so you hardly ever miss a shot!
Pictures can easily be navigated for viewing or deletion in up to 9 thumbnails at a time. You can zoom into the pictures to check they aren't blurry, etc as well.
In addition to pictures, the camera can store video (with sound) up to 3 mins long - although only 30 secs for full 640 x 480 video, but this is really quite impressive resolution for what is primarily a camera and not a camcorder. These videos can of course be watched back on the camera too! It's easy to flick between video and photo mode with one sliding switch on the top of the camera.
Cameras out there use various flash memory formats. This one uses Type I compact flash cards (I asked Canon and they said it should (but hadn't really verified) support any size card, but I've only tried it with 256 mb myself). Compact flash is by far the cheapest form of flash memory (up to half the price sometimes of similar capacity products). I'd suggest getting at least a 128 mb card or even 256 mb so you hardly have to worry about space on extended trips. A 256 mb card sells for £25-30 on Amazon, which is a real bargain. With 256 mb you can store 150-200 maximum quality pictures! (The card that comes with the camera is 16 mb, which is completely inadequate for even a beginner, but enough to try out your new purchase or some emergency spare storage).
Other slight drawbacks are: This (like quite a few other cameras and camcorders) isn't really designed to work as a webcam. While you can sort of use it as such, it's not likely to do what you need. Also note that when attaching this camera, it doesn't appear as a removable drive (with its own letter), but as a device - you can still access the files on it fine, but it may come as a surprise to some.
The other point is that also like many other cheaper cameras, there's no filter thread to mount other lenses or filters, which is a pity for people who move beyond the beginner stage with this camera.
** Conclusion: ** This is truly a great example to other budget cameras and you can't regret buying the A300, especially at £110 (remember to get some more memory too). It's hard to take a bad shot with this camera (assuming you have some creativity within you of course).

~~~~ Canon Powershot A300 ~~~~
Here is my review on my digital camera that I have used for the last 3 months. The first thing I would say about this camera is that it is superb value for money. When I began by quest for buying a digital camera, I wanted a camera with good picture quality, over 3 megapixels and one that is made by a trusted electronics company such as Sony, Canon or so on. This left me with several options and with it being my first ... ...several cameras of which the Canon Powershot A300 stood out. I decided this was the camera for me early on. I spent more time looking for the best price for this camera than deciding which camera i wanted. Since I have had it, I have not had any problems. The only problem is finding enough space on my hard drive for all the picture a video clips I now have.
Advantages: Photo and Video (with sound) all in one brilliant camera Disadvantages: Battery Life and No Optical Zoom
The A300 is a really nice inexpensive (prices from about £110) that takes excellent quality photos (up to 3.2 MegaPixels) as well as being able to take 60 seconds (on the 16Mb memory card it comes with) of video with sound (up to 640x480 in resolution).
Despite looking a bit cheap and plasticky (as the price would suggest it would be) the Powershot A300 is an excellent solid little camera. It features a sliding lens cover, which when pulled back ... ...not to take it back far enough and wonder why it isn’t working), you will turn the camera on and the 1.5 inch LCD screen on the back will light up.
Initially your camera will be set to default settings which should be manual everything (e.g. Exposure, Aperture, ISO, Effect (B+W, Sepia etc.) and Resolution). If you know much about photography then you will have a rough idea what these are all about, if not then "default" is probably the best plan ...
The Canon Powershot A300 is now sitting at the entry level price bracket for digital cameras. I paid 170UKP but they are no available slightly cheaper on-line. The cheapest I saw was at Chiao for 151UKP.
On first using the camera I was slightly confused by the huge array of menu systems available. Having previously used entry level Olympus digital cameras which are simple point and click affairs this Canon model seemed confusing. It is important ... ...try to take images, especially if, like me you are used to different brands. After a couple of months of ownership I still hold that the graphics in the menu are not intuitive but I did soon get used to them.
The only other downside to this camera is battery life. Batteries in digital cameras are notoriously short lived and out of half a dozen products this is the shortest battery life I have ever encountered. On one occasion duracell long life ...
Advantages: picture quality, ease of use, good software. Disadvantages: again, batteries
This is my second digital camera, the first being a cannon A100, so an obvious comparison is going to be drawn between the two.
My main reason for choosing this camera is because I was very impressed with the A100, also the controls/ buttons are basicly the same in operation, ( so no need to learn again), for myself. The main difference is the fact that you need to slide open the lense cover, then a bit more to activate it into record mode.
QUALITY.
... ...are not as well built as the old A100, the materials used in the construction of the main body and control buttons of the A300 are of a cheaper, harder , more plastic..ey type feel, the A100 had softer , better quality buttons, the battery holder / compact flash card lid had a much better fit, the A300 's lid wobbles about.
But of course where the A300 shines is in it's internal software upgrades, it has the latest DiGic processer fitted, this chip ...
Advantages: Excellent features, good picture quality Disadvantages: No optical zoom. Battery life
...decided upon this camera, the canon A300. Reasons why? At the time (1 year ago) it was £199 and broke new ground with its megapixel-per-pound value, along with its generous features. At this price a 3.2mp camera from Canon had to be worth a try.
It comes packaged with a paltry 16mb compact flash card, a pair of AA batteries, lead to connect to your PC and software from Canon. Now first of all the battery life is not great with this camera so do ... ...AA camera batteries. You can get them from high street shops and they dramatically increase your usage life. Cost - about £22. Then I bought a 64mb storage card for about £20 from an online store, and finally a nice case (about £12) to protect it from bumps and scatches.
Picture quality is good and on the highest resolution setting they are enough quality to print at 7 x 5. The only downside is the lack of optical zoom. There is a digital zoom function ...
