I still love this camera after several months of ownership.
There are five settings on the wheel on the back:
"For Still photos" 1. Auto, within which you can change flash, drive mode and picture size but nothing else; 2. Manual, within which you can swap between manual or super macro mode. The manual option allows you change the exposure, film speed (ISO 80 - 400), white balance, drive mode and colour effects (sepia, b&w, vivid, etc). The super macro option is excellent, giving fabulously detailed close-ups of objects and why I chose this model; 3. Finally there is the Scene mode - presets for Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids&Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach and Fireworks. The manual explains in more detail what these settings are, allowing you to adapt them for your own uses. 4. Playback. Pictures and videos can be viewed in this mode, as a whole or in part, panning and scanning around by a combination of buttons on the back. This is the only slightly fiddly part, remembering which combination zooms in and which moves on to the next photo.
"Movies" 5. The video setting has two modes: Video (640x800) and Compact Video (160x200) within which White Balance, Drive Mode and colour effects can be adjusted. The length of video will depend on the size of memory card you have and which setting you choose. Sound is recorded (of course) and audible in the playback mode (not so naturally - on my old Canon A40 there was no playback sound).
"In Conclusion" The only real negative is the speed with which the two AA batteries are consumed, but that's my fault for not buying rechargables. This model is smaller & lighter than earlier versions, but functions are not sacrificed. Do buy an extra memory card, otherwise your enthusiasm for taking 5 megapixel photos will be swiftly thwarted by lack of space. The x4 optical zoom is powerful but detracts significantly from the image quality, and unless you're contemplating a career as a paparazzo, probably unnecessary most of the time.
There are a few other functions and changeable settings, but I can't find the manual to remind myself of what they are! So this review comes with a caveat: It concentrates on the elements I use on a regular basis and is not exhaustive. I've also undermined what was going to be my final point: Read the manual! As far as I can remember it is well written and informative, useful for understanding the presets and the various elements that can be personalised.
I mainly use my camera for photographing items to sell on eBay as well as jewellery items in the supermacro mode (yes dear reader, I make jewellery), relying on my camera phone for the out-and-about stuff. But when I remember to put it in my pocket, this camera always out-performs the phone for quality, if not spontaneity.
This model comes in various versions with different coloured front panels. If your shopping for it on Amazon (where I bought mine), check all the colours as they do tend to vary in price. My cranberry red model may not have been my first choice, but at £10 cheaper than other versions who cares?
I have already recommended this model to friends and colleagues. For the price it is unbeatable.
