I bought my Canon PowerShot A530 in the January sales as my old digital camera had been dropped and broken in the Christmas holidays. I love to take lots of photographs to record everything we do but I am by no means into all the technology. I just wanted something small that would fit easily into my pocket and something that was not too pricey, was extremely easy to use and most importantly took really good photos. My partner did a bit of research for me on the internet to see what was around (he was the one who dropped the old camera!) and he thought this one would probably be the best one for me.
Appearance *******************
It is small, silver and light-weight (weighing 217g). Dimensions: (WxDxH): 9 cm x 4.3 cm x 6.4 cm. When I saw it in the shop I thought it looked a bit more old fashioned than many of the others in the price range because it wasn't completely flat like them but now I think it is much better as it is easier to hold - only if you are right handed - as your fingers wrap around the bulgy bit that holds the batteries and card and where there is also the picture taking button
Ease of use ****************
It is described as a point-n-shoot camera and that's really what it is as it is so easy to use and you get good results right away. It also has an ISO 800 setting which reduces the effects if you are like me and sometimes shake the camera. It is fast to start up and play back too. When I showed my son (he's a teacher) this new camera I was very pleased to hear that he had done a lot of research on cameras and had also independently bought 6 of these for his department for his students to use.
Features *******************
5 mega pixels of resolution
Retractable 4x optical zoom lens, also 4x digital zoom
22 shooting modes from fully automatic to full manual
16:9 Widescreen for full-screen viewing on widescreen TVs and computer monitors, producing images and film clips for the widescreen TV or computer monitor
Pre-programmed creative scene modes which are really good for beginners like me. You can set these by using the dial on the top of the camera and there is a little logo for each mode. Some of them don't look too much like the scene they are depicting but you very soon get used to them. Additionally you can see which mode you are in and change the mode by looking at the LCD screen. You can't do this so easily when it is bright light which is why the dial is also useful. The modes are:
Auto - when the camera does it all for you. I started on this one but am much more adventurous now!
P Program - you can use to access advanced exposure compensation features while shooting mostly automatically.
Manual - lets you set ISO speed, exposure compensation and white balance - I haven't attempted this yet
Portrait - this concentrates on the person you are photographing and blurs the background
Landscape - which is very focussed near and distant
Nightscene - does just what it suggests and is for evening and sunsets
Stitch assistant - for stitching together shots for panorama pictures
Movie - for taking short movies with sound - I will comment on this feature separately
Then there are Special Scene Modes:
Foliage - for leaves, autumn colours etc
Snow - so you can avoid the bluish tinge you sometimes get with snow scenes
Beach - good for taking pictures of people on the beach as it avoids darkening faces
Fireworks - no explanation needed!
Indoor - ditto
Kids and Pets - also good for fast moving objects
Night snapshot - for brighter backgrounds and subjects lit by flash
Colour accent - must try this out - you can choose to retain a single colour in your image while other colours turn monochrome
Colour swap - lets you select a colour and replace it with a colour you specify for special effects … I didn't realise it had these features until I started playing around with the camera to write this review!
Then there is a mode called 'My colours' - again, I haven't got as far as trying these but this is what they are supposed to do:
Vivid - for taking vibrant shots with dramatic high-contrast
Neutral - lets you produce images of subtle, elegant tonality
Sepia - so you can take old fashioned brown toned photographs
Black white - which of course, does as it says, and this is really good for photographing text
Positive Film - haven't tried this but it is supposed to let you combine "Vivid Blue," "Vivid Green" and "Vivid Red" to achieve a positive film effect
Lighter and Darker skin tone - lets you change the tone of your subject's skin
Custom Colour - enables you to finely adjust brightness and vividness, and set your preferred balance of blue, green, red and skin colors - I haven't felt the need to try this one
Other features include:
Print/Share Button which it says is for easy direct printing and downloading, plus ID Photo Print and Movie Print with Canon CP and SELPHY Compact Photo Printers. I haven't tried this as I rarely make prints from my photos preferred to buy prints of them off the internet.
1.8" colour LCD screen with up to 10x playback zoom Macro button for taking close ups - I've used this a lot very satisfactorily
Built in flash
Built in red eye reduction
Self-timer with 10.2 seconds delay - have had a lot of fun using this feature too!
Built in microphone enables you to make comments as you take the photos (I think) but I haven't figured out how to do this. I think this is rather more my problem than the cameras as I really hate reading all the instructions
Burst feature - which enables you to take lots of pictures one after the other in rapid succession. I'm sure it has this feature as I remember the sales assistant spending quite some time to find it and I really must try to work out how to use it as I have enjoyed this feature on my mobile phone
Card *************
The camera came with a 16mb card which is too small to be much use and I quickly replaced this with a 1gb one which is more than enough for my needs
Batteries and connexions ******************
It came with 2 AA batteries and I was surprised how long they lasted. I now use rechargeable ones as I had bought quite a few of them for my old digital camera which used 4 batteries. They really do last a lot longer in this camera. The connexions are: 1 x USB 1 x composite video/audio output 1 x DC power input
Movie feature **************** I am really impressed with this feature but do remember, if it isn't already more than obvious, that I have very little knowledge and experience of cameras. I use the movie feature a lot to record short sequences with sounds and then I use Windows Moviemaker to put together short films combining the movie sequences and still shots. When shooting movies outdoors on windy days the camera picks up all the wind noises over any voices but I have discovered using Moviemaker you can hide these and superimpose a commentary or music. Personally I much prefer these short movies of about 10 minutes duration to the endless videos I have seen made by friends with movie cameras.
Price******************
We bought my camera in the big French supermarket E. LeClerc in their January sale this year for just under £100 - of course, buying the bigger card put the price up. This was as low as the best price we had found on the internet at that time. Looking on Amazon today it is advertised for £128.65
Recommendation*******************
I would recommend this camera for someone like me who loves to take a lot of photgraphs and movies but who is very much a beginner and who wants something easy to use, not too expensive but also something that produces excellent results and is very much fun to use.
Advantages: Good size, value for money, and easy to use straight out of the box Disadvantages: Probably not the camera for professionals
I bought this camera in a hurry just before going away and have to say I was very impressed with it. Having 5 megapixels is fine and I don't see much value in getting higher for basic 6x4 prints. It has a 4x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom so there's plenty of scope to get close enough for most of the type of shots that I'm likely to take.
One of the reasons for buying this one was the body shape and position of the buttons and dials. There is ... ...you to keep it nice and steady when taking photos and the zoom ring is just above this. I tend to use the viewfinder to frame up my photos so the LCD screen althouhg a nice feature for reviewing isn't too importnat for me. The package includes the usual leads as well as one to connect up to a TV to review pictures which was well received by my family when we sat down and went through a slideshow of the previous days photos.
As I only received it ...

Advantages: 4x optical zoom, easy to use settings, lightweight and small Disadvantages: The LCD screen has a lower resolution to some earlier models so it is harder to determine how good pictures are from the screen as well as when changing settings in manual mode
My family own an older canon powershot camera the A80 so when I decided to buy a camera I looked at Cannon powershot cameras as I was already familiar with many of the settings and menu buttons and pleased with the picture quality powershots have. After looking at cameras made by other brands as well I decided on either the A530 or the A540, eventually going for this one as the extra features the A540 had were not important to me and I did not feel ... ...cost. I find this camera, like earlier powershot models easy to use and although at first I used only the most basic functions (in automatic taking pictures) I have found with the help of the instruction manual relatively easy to play around with the different settings. The camera itself if lighter than earlier powershots, mainly due to requiring only 2 AA batteries instead of 4 and at first this caused me a few problems with the camera wobbling, ...

Advantages: Looks good, cheap, reliable, durable, good quality pictures, easy to use. Disadvantages: Goes through battrys like no tomorrow (ReChargebles recommended)
Buying my Canon A530 was actually a emergency buy as my FujiFilm E510 packed in on a holiday on florida. I payed $230 (£115) for it which also bought a 2Gb memory card for the camera separate, which would allow me to take over 1300 photos, so I was feeling pleased with it.
*****Ease of Use*****
This was my second digital camera so I had only been used to using my old one. But as a person who laughs in the face of any instruction manual, found the ... ...old, I still think the Canon looks pretty good. It's not the slimest camera in the world, but ive never liked slimmer cameras, if money was no object I'd have a professional SLR cameras, as I do enjoy photography. Back to the Canon, right handers will find that the Canon will fit well into their hand thanks to the bulge at the front.
Overall I still wish I had an SLR but this is a great camera for beginners, or for someone with some experience, ...

Advantages: A range of settings, light, good allround camera. Disadvantages: 5 megapixels is quite low for todays standard.
A decent camera. Iv'e had it for about 2 years now and have used it mainly for holidays and some activities. In all fairness it seems to take good quality photos with no hassle. I generally use the Auto setting but for those who know what they're doing it's also possible to use the manual setting to get it just right. Other settings include: Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Video mode, Stitch assist (for taking wide photos and stitching it all together ... ...This has many sub-settings where you can choose the following settings: Beach, fireworks, snow, foliage, indoor, kids and pets, night snapshot and a few other more professional settings I suppose. I think you'll agree that the choice of settings is very good. Having just come back from holiday I have several quality photos to show the rest of the family and friends. It's light, a good size screen on the back, quite small and generally a good allround ...

Advantages: Takes better pics and more functions than most cheap compacts Disadvantages: slightly larger in size than some
This is an excellent little camera for amateur photographers who want a little more than just point-and-click.
It has a number of great functions that you might expect with much more expensive SLR cameras that are accessed with a wheel on the top including fully manual settings (ISO, White balance, flash output, metering etc).
Although not as compact as the IXUS variety it does offer many more functionsk, produces better pictures and has a larger ... ...takes very acceptable movies (ideal for youtube etc).
It accepts standard SD or MMC memory cards and it would be worth purchasing a larger one as I tend to use it on max quality and resolution.
It is also excellent with the 2 AA batteries it takes making them last ages. ...

The PowerShot A530 is equipped with an approximately 5.0 million camera effective pixel 1/2.5-inch Charge Coupled Device (CCD). Also, with DIGIC II, higher resolution and high-speed processing were achieved and the startup time and response time were shortened. This camera is equipped with the 4x optical zoom lens, which covers a 35mm film equivalent focal length ranging from 35 mm (Wide Angle) to 140 mm (Telephoto) and an f/2.6 (Wide Angle) - f/5.5 (Telephoto) aperture. The PowerShot A530 succeeds the basic shooting functions of the PowerShot A510 and has additional or more advanced functions as well except omitting Tv (Shutter-Priority AE) and Av (Aperture-Priority AE) in the shooting mode. The recording pixels now include a "Widescreen" feature that has the same aspect ratio as so-called 16:9 widescreen TVs for shooting wide images. Adding ISO [800] has resulted in a faster shutter speed even when shooting in dark environments. The Color Accent mode and Color Swap mode that transform colors when shooting have been added to the Special Scene mode. The new "My Colors" in the FUNC. menu is used to change the look and feel of the pictures when shooting. With the newly added "Standard", "Compact", "Color Accent" and "Color Swap" in the movie mode, it is easier to select modes to meet the purpose. In the Standard mode, digital zoom while recording movies is available.
