I wanted a new camera around last Christmas ('06) so i decided to research some camera's to see what would be suitable. I particularly wanted a camera to have the option to record video's preferably with sound.
Out of all the camera's I looked at the Canon PowerShot A10 came out on top. It had the best features for an acceptable price (around £200 with an extra 1gb memory card and a case)
Specs: 7.1 megapixels 2.5" LCD screen x6 optical zoom and x4 digital option to record videos, with sound Image stabilization Exposure compensation Self - timer A/V out socket on the camera to enable you to plug your camera into a TV and show your pictures/videos SD card Usb out
Why you should buy it: It has a huge 2.5" LCD screen, big enough view all you pictures/video clips. It has an optical viewfinder (so looking through the viewfinder the image you see zooms in and out, as you would see on the screen) - the A710 is one of the few of these types of camera's that is being made with a viewfinder, as now most camera manufacturers don't see the need because the LCD screen isn't as affected by glare from the sun. You can record videos with sound, with 5 different settings (standard, colour swap, colour accent, compact, and fast frame rate) It has 11 different settings, from manual pictures, auto shooting, to video. The quality of picture it takes is good. The neat design of the camera allows you to easily take pictures with one hand.
Downsides: Battery life is pretty poor because it runs off 2 AA batteries, this means you need to carry around 2 or 3 sets of batteries every time you want to take pictures for an extended period. Camera is a bit bulky, its just a wee bit too big to fit in the average pocket, especially when you put a case on it. As with most camera's you'll need to buy a memory card separate, probably 2 if you're going to be taking lots of videos.
Overall I was very pleased with the camera, and have used it extensively since i purchased it, it came out on top for value for money for the features it offered compared to similar camera's of a different make. You can look past the size of the camera, and just bring a few extra AA batteries with you to compensate. All its features will keep you amused with it for a long time, and you'll have great fun trying them all out. If this is the type of camera you're looking for I would definitely recommend you buy this.

Advantages: Light/pocketable high quality all purpose compact digital camera. Nice software Disadvantages: Noise already at ISO400, Now replaced by A720is (but price will drop!)

Review of Canon PowerShot A710 IS
Advantages: Heaps of features, stabilised 6x zoom, reliable, Canon lens, excellent results Disadvantages: Slow flash recharge, noise at high ISO, demands a little learning
Advantages: great picture and video quality, auto setting, lots of settings, easy to use in auto Disadvantages: battery life, come with small memory card, need to buy case separately
