Why buy a Canon G10? For about the same price you could get an SLR with a much bigger sensor. And whilst at 80 ISO the G10 with its 14.7 megapixels actually gives better resolution than Canon’s1000D SLR, at 400 ISO and above its resolution falls away and noise increases dramatically. But at the SLR’s base price you would not get a 28-140mm (equivalent) zoom; and the G10’s compactness and light weight make it a far more attractive option as a camera that you can take with you everywhere. It does most things very well, and some things brilliantly.
The most direct competition in a compact comes from the Panasonic LX3. While not quite matching the LX3’s low light performance the G10’s superior zoom (5x as opposed to 2.5) makes it far more versatile, and at low ISO it has superior, not to say stunning, resolution.
So what about the G10’s supposed Achilles heel- it’s relatively poor low light performance compared to an SLR or even the LX3? Well for one thing it’s not that bad- certainly better than the vast majority of compacts. I use shutter priority mode to keep the aperture at maximum (2.8-3.5) and thus the shutter speed as high as possible, allowing use of 100 or 200 ISO which still give pretty decent resolution with little noise. I find that the optical image stabilisation (OIS) is very effective in allowing me to keep the ISO low in low light; set in OIS continuous mode I regularly shoot down to 1/15; at 1/8 and below single shot mode is more effective and I have taken hand held shots at 1/4 with little or no camera shake.
With its superb 3" 460,000 dpi monitor, a host of manual options, RAW shooting capability (with great processing software thrown in), customisable menus and incredible macro capability, the G10 has a lot to offer; you get a lot of camera for your buck (or quid) in a surprisingly small package.

Review of Canon PowerShot G10
Advantages: RAW format, manual- automatic, 14.5MP, external flash option, solid, GOOD filmcamera! Disadvantages: If the zoom would be even more...I could even get those pretty little birds up in the tree!
