Overall user rating Canon PowerShot G2 4 reviews | Write a review

Offering the highest image quality in its class, the PowerShot G2 utilizes the latest 4-megapixel CCD to capture pin sharp pictures with every click of the shutter. With a...
more...high-resolution 3X optical zoom lens, reduced shutter interval, completely lossless RAW image recording mode and new Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and RGB filter, the PowerShot G2 is a new photographic industry benchmark. The powerful PowerShot G2 was designed for truly creative digital photographers who demand precision image capture management. Three Auto-focus modes including continuous, single and 3 selectable AF points with 12 shooting modes (including Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE and fully manual exposure control) means the G2 can always deliver exactly what a photographer requires. Advanced image capture controls include a histogram exposure graph for image evaluation (as seen on the Canon EOS D30) that allows the photographer to see if an image is correctly exposed. Early indication of excess light or darkness allows exposure settings to be changed to obtain an optimal result. The histogram is displayed on the G2's vari-angle LCD monitor that twists and swivels to provide the most convenient viewing angle and adds flexibility when shooting in difficult or awkward situations. Development didn't stop there. The PowerShot G2 uses much less power than its predecessors, which means a lot more pictures from a single battery charge. Canon engineering gives a user more flexibility to take high-quality pictures whenever and wherever they want without worrying about running low on power. The versatility of the PowerShot G2 is enhanced by a comprehensive range of optional system accessories including Canon's full range of Speedlite EX flashguns making it possible to capture images in extreme low-light conditions. For low light close-ups the G2 supports Canon's Macro Ring Light (MR- 14EX) that can be fitted over a 250D close-up lens. For long distance work, a powerful 153mm tele-converter brings a subject right into the camera while a 27.2mm wide-angle converter makes it easy to grab those wrap-around wide-angle shots. All PowerShot G2 lens converters are compatible with the standard 3.6x step-less digital zoom. This means that high-quality images can be captured at any stage of the zoom process. Nothing but the best from the world's most technologically advanced camera manufacturer!

Full review
I love the Canon Power Shot G2 camera that I use in my working life as a journalist/photographer.

It is robust and strong, and is ideal for the busy professional who needs to take quality images quickly.

There are many features on this camera, macro feature and everything else you would expect from a camera of this type.

However, there is something you will not find, a digital zoom. The zoom on the Canon is an optical zoom and this means that the quality of photographs is always sharp and always crisp.

Many people have been severely disappointed when they have taken a new digital camera out of the box and found out that the so-called digital zoom returns sub-standard images.

As I say, this is not the case with the Canon Power Shot G2.

The image screen shows you exactly what the image will be and the screen can be put in a number of different positions for ease of operator use. The screen also has a “safe” position to ensure that any potential damage to it during storage is minimised dramatically.

The camera is not very light, but then neither is it too heavy, either.

The battery life is reasonable and you can get a great many shots in-between charges. Although, of course, use of the flash will tend to increase battery drain.

Although the camera has many features (all adequately covered in the instruction manual) the one setting that is most impressive is the auto setting. In auto setting the Canon Power Shot G2 really is a point and click camera, but it is capable of returning some very high quality images.

The Canon Power Shot G2 is an ideal camera for journalists who double as photographers, amateur or professional photographers, insurance investigators, estate agents, architects, builders, etc., etc.

Changing batteries and flashcards is very easy and a job of only seconds, so to re-cap, all-in-all this camera is ideal for the busy professional who needs to produce professional quality results yet who may not be a professional photographer themselves.

UPDATE: This model has now been discontinued. It has been replaced with the G6 model.
