I have now ventured into the world of digital photography after over 20 years of using my faithfull Nikon SLR.
After spending several hours studying reviews, I decided to look for a lightweight compact camera that had the advantages and versatility of an SLR. The Canon G3 fills the bill admirably and it is one of the most feature packed cameras for its size and price on the market.
The camera is fitted with an f2.0 30-140mm zoom lens which can be expanded by digital zoom. It is fitted with a 4.0m pixel ccd which is capable of high resolution sufficient to produce A4 size prints without any trouble at all. The supplied 32m compact flash card will give 27 of this type of shot.
The range of features is beyond belief for this size of camera. It has a "flip design" tft screen which shows the exact image that the camera is going to take. Unlike an SLR camera, it will even show you the correct exposure in manual mode etc which was a welcome supprise. Therefor this camera is well suited to the semi pro who is looking for those special shots.
I have three minor gripes:- 1) The supplied li-ion battery is unique to Canon but it lasted me for over 400 shots before a recharge. Canon claim about 300 charge cycles. If you are going away for long periods and dont want to take a charger, you will need to buy a spare battery which cost anywhere between £30-£50 each. I would have prefered AA batteries which are cheaper and easier to obtain.
2) The lens barrel can be seen in the optical viewfinder in wide angle mode. This can be a litte distracting at times.
3) The supplied lens cap is useless. I am supprised that Canon could not find some better way of protecting the lens than a cheap plastic cap on a string that keeps falling off!
Overall the camera is a superb and fun camera to use.The picture quality and versatiliy of the unit is faltless. The manuals and software are about the best and very well detailed.
Advantages: Battery life, versatility, quality of photographs, ease of use Disadvantages: Size, and size of initial flash card.
This camera has converted me to digital photography. It is brilliant in so many ways.
The battery life is brilliant, although it would be good if you could buy back up AA batteries in case the big one went flat although this has only happened to me once in about two years of using it.
The quality of photographs are very impressive and I have printed photographs out at my local photo printers and they have been of an incredible standard, much better ... ...also a variety of modes and you can use an external flash for even better pictures in dark surroundings.
The existing flash is also pretty good.
I have also enjoyed playing around with fstops and shutter speeds to create differing effects.
If you are looking for a digital camera with flexibility, ease of use and high quality photographs this has to be within your top 3. ...

...colours and together with my Canon i965 produces wonderful prints that people would have great difficulty telling apart from a picture taken using an expensive SLR.
The accessories I'd recommend to any owner are the Canon lens adaptor (to use a UV filter for protection and a lens cap or a wide/tele lens) and an extra battery, both can be bought for about £15 each. Some more memory wouldn't be a bad idea too, 512MB Compact Flash card is around £80 ...

This is now an updadted op. The camera has been used extensively and so i can tell you some more about it. I can also rectify some of my ciao opinion writing errors by adding in prices etc. Because this was one of my first ops I wasn't sure of what to put but I guess I have learned my lessons. I have never owned a digital camera before, but with the prices coming down I decided to take the plunge. I am not a professional but I do like to snap away ... ...little artistic! I bought What Camera, a magazine that gives reviews (i didn't know about Ciao then). From what I read I decided on the G3. But to maximise my value for money I actually purchased the camera from eBay. The camera cost me £395 plus £15 postage from Hong Kong. The quality of a digital image depends on a variety of factors, factors that Canon engineers have given extraordinary attention in the PowerShot G3. The PowerShot G3 owes its brilliantly detailed images to a high-resolution, 1/1.8 " 4.0 megapixel CCD for a postcard-sized image with no visible pixellation. On-chip primary color filters provide vivid and realistic color without the noisiness associated with other primary color filters. The image processor, DIGIC, improves the signal processing algorithm, resulting in improved picture quality, more accurate auto focus, and faster image processing speed. The lens of the PowerShot G3 is a 4x zoom lens that moves from wide-angle to extreme close-up with the touch of a finger. It also has a bright and large f/2.0 to 3.0 aperture so you can shoot in low light without a flash. In addition, the G3 has a digital zoom of 3.6x, so that the maximum zoom capability of the camera is approximately 14 times, reaching a maximum focal length of 490 mm equivalent to a 35mm camera. The zoom process can be moved in six steps from wide-angle to extreme telephoto using the electronic dial on top of the camera. The electronic dial, with its independent mode dial and lever, replaces the functions of the previous two-stage main dial/mode dial. The control layout is more functional and simpler to use. The display panel at the top of the large, 1.8 " LCD monitor has been redesigned for a clear layout of icons. Larger fonts make the menus easier to read. A single touch resets all user settings to default conditions.
