I would describe myself as an "enthusiastic amature" that over the past 20 years have had more than a little bit to do with 35mm photography.
I started with a camera that my dad brough back from Lybia in the 50's. A fixed length Braun with a manual focus and instructions in German. All i can say is that it must have been love or i would never have stuck with it.
From there i went to my beloved SLR (Canon EOS 300) and spent many a happy year playng with that. I prefer to get my hands on the equipment and work things out as i go along rather than spending hours reading an instruction manual. That was why i was resistant to the onslaught of digital cameras, I cant even program my video and my mobile phone has more menu's than i know what to do with. The last thing i wanted was a camera that was more space aged than i caould cope with.
My affair with Digital was started when i attended the Canon open day at Lulworth Cove earlier this year and was "Lent" a Canon Ixus 400digital camera for the morning. I must say that i was initially very unimpressed and looked at it with all the affection one would a dead rat.
Within 20 mins i had worked out the basics without a manual and was snapping away happily. The LCD display was enchanting. I liked getting a sneek preview of what i was getting in my picture. The ability to delete pictures that were bad immedatly apealed to the bank balance, Knowlage that i would not get another reel of film back with blury shots to the vain side of my artistic nature that did not want to belive that i could still be rubbish! Bracketing shots that i would select 1 out of 3 and throw the rest into a drawer would be a thing of the past and my scanner would pratically be able to pack its bags as i would be able to dowload directly to my computer.
I ran out and bought my 1st digital camera an Mju 400 and was very, very happy.
So now you have had most of my life story what did i get a G5 only a few months after i bought my first digital camera?
In short i wanted the best of both worlds.
The complex hands on features of my SLR with the digital advantages of the Mju
I chose the G5 as it is reveting back to the canon menus i know so well and takes CF caards over thos microscopic XD ones.
The G5 has a "traditional" black appearance that has been slated as old fassioned and ugly by some of the camera mag's i buy. Personally i wanted something that still looked like a camera underneath all that technology. This one fitted the bill nicely.
It is
Please note i have also reviewed the Telephoto lens and the Wde angle lens seperatly so i have only touched on them here. I would ove to includfe it all but this would then become "War and Peace" rather than a detailed review.
