I needed, and wanted, a good digital camera. My requirements were quite specific for what I wanted to do with the camera, and I did a lot of research into different cameras.
I wanted a camera to:
- Take good pictures at good resolution (doesn't everyone?) mainly for the internet - Take movies for as long as the memory card you buy allows - Be able to shoot in dark conditions - Have a good zoom, that has an image stabiliser, for watching sports and various leisure activities

Firstly, if you're going to buy any digital camera make sure you don't let yourself down by having a poor memory card. I bought a 1Gb Ultra II Sandisk card in order to get very good length movies at high resolution (about 9 minutes at TV quality - 640 x 480 30fps superfine quality), and also for the rapid successive shots I would probably take for sports.
Now, the camera.
Firstly, the zoom is phenomenal. It's a 10x optical zoom, with 3.2 digital zoom. However, it's no good having a brilliant zoom with little loss of quality (even at 32x with the digital zoom encompassed in) unless the camera can take a still picture. The Image stabiliser is the best I have ever come across - I've never had an unwanted blurry picture. Of course, if you're a professional you'll have a tripod - but I'm not, and I don't (only a mini one for desks and setting up interval photos - more on that in a second).
Next, the type of photos you can take without having a vast knowledge of photography, cameras, different lens types, shutter speeds, aperture exposure etc is brilliant. As I've said - I know little about the technicalities of photography, but I have taken some wonderful arty pictures (with the help of the very well explained manual and playing with the settings I have learnt a lot, also).
The quality on the photos is superb. Although "only" 3.2megapixels, I can't notice the difference between the photos I take and those from a 5mp camera. The photos blow up to A4 size (1600 x 1200 superfine resolution) and that's more than enough for me. The refineness and sharpness of the photos are also excellent. Again, professionals may notice the difference - but I simply cannot.
The movie function is also where this camera comes into its own. Together with the bundled software, I have fooled viewers of my movies into thinking they were taken with a camcorder! The adaption of light settings is very quick, the focus is excellent - and the camera picks up sound extraordinarily well.
I honestly can't fault the camera at all - the stitch assist is brilliant and the software again makes it so simple to use (I am quite adept with photoshop, but prefer to use the bundled software with the camera - such is the quality and speed of the application), and the "intervalometer" - which takes pictures at set time intervals, is a great function. I decided to set it up for every half hour one night when I slept, just as a test, and the results were not only very impressive, but hilarious (as you may imagine!).
The rapid photos, or successive / continuous photo shooting mode is also superb. The speed at which the camera takes the photos is incredible - it's like watching a group of stills that make up a movie. The only problem I have noticed, and I think this is a memory card fault rather than camera fault, is that when the memory card is getting full (around 700Mb) the camera slows at the rate it takes pictures. There are ways to avoid this - take any shots that require the successive mode shooting first, then take other pictures and videos etc. so it hasn't been an irritating problem.
So to give an overall conclusion - the camera is well worth the money. Don't pay for prices in Jessops or the high street, you can get it much cheaper by searching on the internet. Buy a fast memory card, with whatever storage you require.
For professionals, this may not be the camera to get. It's more of a "prosumer" camera - professional features for amateurs, and some simply fantastic consumer features that keep the likes of me hooked, and taking all kinds of different photos.
I have become that annoying person with their camera out, constantly snapping away! If your requirements are similar to mine (video, good zoom, compact camera that can take great photos even if you're not a pro), then buy this camera.
Advantages: Value for money and features Disadvantages: Slow autofocus on max zoom in dim light
...I dusted off my old Canon A1 35mm film SLR with its 70-210 zoom to get me closer to the birds. But film is expensive, and difficult to file. Digital is now my preferred method.
My 3 daughters all have Canon A40 or A60 digital cameras and they seem pretty durable, so I've kept an eye on other Canon digital cameras.
I started to get itchy fingers and wondered whether a bigger optical zoom on a digital would help. Most were very pricy, and I didn't ... ...Well the Canon S1s gradually came down in price over the last 18 months and last month it briefly dropped below £200 and I bought one.
I've only taken a couple of hundred pictures and a few videos so far, but I'm impressed. It's quiet and rapid to switch on and has an extremely fast x10 optical zoom with image stabiliser. It only has an electronic display in the viewfinder, so most of the time I use the rear LCD to view and frame photos. It's maximum ...

...camera.
This was the Canon A70. I went for this as it had all the manual controls that I required, was small and it was relatively cheap. After playing with it for some time and appreciating the flexibility of digital I was very impressed with what you could do once you have taken the actual picture and also with Canon. After a while I found the zoom of the A70 to be limiting as I attend a number of sporting events and found the 3x optical zoom ... ...I then saw the Canon Powershot S1 IS in a magazine; it had 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and 30fps video mode. It was all too tempting and soon got the better of my wallet!! I found it on the web for a reasonable price so it had to be done.
When I received it I liked the look of it and although feeling awkward initially it began to fall into place soon enough.
The zoom is fantastic as it can get you right into the action or the scene and ...

OK, this is my second Canon digital camera. I've now been shooting with it for 18 months, have taken over 7000 shots, and all in all the results have always been excellent. The 10x optical zoom has come in very handy. Autofocus at 10x zoom in low light is not always accurate, but I suspect this will be a similar problem in other cameras. In daylight the autofocus rarely gets it wrong. At shorter zoom levels the autofocus is excellent. Zoom is also ... ...of the range to the other in about a second. However, the selector can be moved a smaller amount, allowing for slower more accurate zooming.
It's also worth noting that the lens is f2.8 - f3.5, hence you have a quite awesome lens range without sacrificing the aperture - I've looked at buying an SLR when I bought this camera, but found I'd need to spend thousands on lenses to get the same range with the same aperture range.
The vivid mode in the ...

Advantages: Great quality, 10x zoom (real zoom), image stabilising lens, will give you great photos Disadvantages: 3.2 mpixles but this is easily outweighed by the other features
I bought this camera about a year and a half ago to take to Australia for a 5 week trip.
I agonised about which camera to buy, did I want a small one, one with a big screen, one with as many megapixels as possible?
In the end I plumped for quality over quantity (so to speak), that's a great quality lens and features over megapixels.

It means that when zooming in on subjects, the sort of hand and body movements that would normally make your pictures all blurred are eliminated. I'm very shaky-handed and not one of my photos have come out blurred.
Together with the 10x optical zoom it allows you to take photos simply not ...

Advantages: Stylish, high zoom, quality images, easy to use, lightweight, etc Disadvantages: Difficult to manually focus on a subject, not sure if it is entirely waterproof
Canon's PowerShotS1IS has been a revolutionary breakthrough in camera designs. A stylish, lightweight silver camera, comfortable to handle and easy to use; perfect for the beginner or amateur (professionals may also consider using it sometimes, depending on the type of shot wanted).
With an astonishing 10× optical zoom, there can be no doubt in saying that it is one of the most powerful cameras on the market, in comparison with other similar cameras. Optical zoom is the real, true zoom that manages to produce good quality images by repositioning the lenses. The maximum digital zoom of 3.2 can be combined with the optical zoom to produce a maximum zoom of 32×. However, the more digitally zoomed, the courser the image is, resulting in a lower quality image. This is because digital zoom is a way of magnifying an image using ...
Advantages: Fantastic zoom; image stabiliser; plenty of features Disadvantages: Barely enough megapixels; large size
First off, I should say that I don't own this camera, my Dad does. But that's not to say that I haven't used it extensively. In fact, I probably know more about the functions than my Dad does!
I'll start with the basic spec:
- 10x optical zoom (32x combined)
- Optical image stabiliser
- Canon DIGIC processor
- 3.2 megapixels
- Compactflash memory cards
- 4xAA batteries
See http://www.canon.co.uk/ForHome/ProductFinder/Cameras/Digital/PowerShotS1IS/index.asp?specs=1 for the detailed spec on the Canon website.
The reason this camera stands out from the crowd is it's huge 10x optical zoom. This on it's own is only slightly greater than some other brands, but combined with Canon's image stabiliser (the IS part of the name), it means that you can use the full zoom and take decent photos. I have taken shots at the full 32x ...
The PowerShot S1 IS lets you get incredibly close to your subject. Its 10x optical zoom lens with IS is ideal for detailed shots. The enhanced Movie Mode means you can really move in on the action.Because it's not always possible to get really close to your subject, the PowerShot S1 IS combines an impressive 10x optical zoom lens with an Optical Image Stabilizer (IS) and Ultrasonic Motor (USM). This not only gives you a powerful zoom (38-380mm in 35mm format) but the USM allows for quiet and super-fast zooming, so you won't miss the shot you want and, for nature photography, won't scare any wildlife away. The IS significantly reduces camera shake at full zoom and in low light conditions. The result is incredibly detailed shots whether you want close-up pictures of an exotic bird or your child's winning goal.Combine the zoom with the PowerShot S1 IS's enhanced Movie Mode and you can record detailed movies with superior, flicker-free VGA resolution. Using a frame rate of up to 30 frames per second for super smooth action, the PowerShot S1 IS automatically adjusts the exposure, focusing and white balance as you film. You can use the optical zoom to manually change your composition at the same time. The result is an impressively improved image quality and sound. And as you can record up to approximately 1GB of movie (depending on the size and speed of the memory card used), recording times are longer. As with every Canon digital camera, the PowerShot S1 IS uses Canon Visionary Technology to ensure the best performance possible. Using Canon's unique iSAPS technology to optimize shooting settings, the high-performance DIGIC processor for fast processing and Image Rendering technology for accurate reproduction of colors, the PowerShot S1 IS delivers incredible results every time. For greater creative control, the PowerShot S1 IS has 12 shooting modes - from Manual to Auto, plus 1 custom setting. A complete range of optional accessories is also available, such as wide/tele converter lenses and a waterproof case. Post-shooting, a variety of editing software is included, and you can print directly to a PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible photo printer without using a PC.
good value, good mode selection, good quality, well built, canon quality, good battery life, good resolution and quality, good manual controls, good LCD
clumpy, clunky design and controls, too big to be a true compact, interface pauses, zoom irritating, not worth the upgrade from G3 (*)
