There is a very broad line between a professional digital SLR cameras and point and shoot cameras. The professional SLR cameras have a multitude of features, settings and are priced rather highly. Point and shoot cameras usually have limited functionality at a cheaper price and smaller size.
The Canon Powershot S50 stakes its mark on that broad line between these two.
The price is a little more expensive than an average point and shoot but still well below a Digital SLR. The size and weight are a little above that of a point and shoot but again still a great way off a Digital SLR. But the features more than carry the price, weight and slight size issues. It still fits in your pocket, you don't need a case and the extra money spent will definitely make the camera last a bit longer.
Many of the manual features within this camera aren't available on smaller and cheaper point and shoots. The manual features include aperture priority, shutter priority, full manual mode, adjustable white balance, custom colour configurations, RAW shooting mode, exposure value adjustments, an intervalometer, focus and exposure brackets, ISO control, flash control, and more.
The battery life on this little camera is excellent, and i have taken over 80 full size shots each using the flash. I would recommend a spare battery. I have upgraded from the included Compact Flash memory card to a 256MB card which stores around 100 photos at the largest and finest JPG quality, 52 RAW images and almost 1000 at 640x480 sizes.
I got this camera for my birthday in 2003 and since then i have taken around 10,500 photos. I have used it for arty shots, product shots, eBay selling, advertising material, website work, and personal photography and it's a winner every time.
The software included with the camera includes a few but the only ones i have used are the Zoombrowser EX, which stores and displays photos pretty well, and the PhotoStitch software. The photo stitching software is good, but i have migrated to manually stitching my photos in Adobe Photoshop because of the higher degree of manual control and creative freedom.
Although this camera does not have any additional lens screw threads, there are various attachments available. I have a fisheye lens attachment (sold separately) which comes with a plastic mount fitted onto the underside where the tripod screw thread is and then clips over the front of the camera and onto the view finder at the top on the back. Highly useful, although a little impractical.
Advantages of this camera are clear. The function to size/weight ratio is amazing. The battery life is great and the picture quality is pretty impressive. Disadvantages take a little while to discover though, and don't prove too much of a hindrance. The 3 minute limit on the video poses a problem in my head, but then I don't really use the video any more. The front sliding mechanism of the camera is a little irritating when you slide the camera into your pocket and the front of the camera opens, but this rarely happens. And finally the macro focus distance limitations mean that you can't get as close to that flower as you want to, but with the aid of a tripod and zooming in, you can make do.
This camera is aimed at a budding amateur photographer who hasn't really any experience of taking any photos. The simplicity and ease of use with the added functionality will mean you will be taking quality photos in no time, and then have the option to move on to advanced features at your leisure. Definitely a camera I would buy again if I lost this one.
Advantages: excelent quality photos, good results using automatic or manual settings, Disadvantages: Supplied flash card a little small .
The Cannon Powershot s50 is all round an excellent camera, I find it very easy to use. The settings are easy to select the main controls being on the top mounted dial with less often used settings accessed via the menu button and displayed on the lcd screen. In most conditions the “auto” setting produces good results. The 3 x optical and 4 x digital zoom is excellent and easy to use via a slider mounted on top of the body. The auto focus, which used ... ...when using the flash, but struggles in low lighting. This can easily be overcome by switching to manual focus although this option can only be used with the optical zoom. Focusing is achieved by holding in the manual focus button and using the rocker switch on top of the camera to focus in or out. An approximation of focus distance is given in a scale at the side of the lcd screen and the centre portion of the shot is magnified. Although a little ...

Advantages: High quality photographs with good optical zoom Disadvantages: Inconvenient proprietory software, Macro view not that good
The Canon Powershot S50 is basically an upgrade of their old model, the S45, and they have certainly done a fantastic job in maintaining their high standards. With five megapixels, you can always be sure that your pictures are going to be of sufficiently high quality to develop into print photos. Unlike a lot of the cheaper cameras there is no pixel interpolation (i.e. the images taken are sharp and well-defined.)
One excellent feature of the Powershot ... ...customised. Much like an SLR, you can set your f-stops and shutter speeds, as well as simulating different ISO film settings from 100 to 400. This is excellent in low lighting conditions and night shots, although in order to get sufficient light the delay in such situations is much longer, and you are advised to get a tripod. On the other hand, you can get some very cool effects if you know your photography well, the classic example being streaking ...

Advantages: Powerful, versatile 5Mp digicam Disadvantages: Slightly bulky, no battery warning, no lens thread, no 'B' function
...Firstly, it is made by Canon which has a good reputation for build and quality and seems to have embraced the digital market wholeheartedly. Secondly, it is 5Mp which gives you more than enough pixels to play with for cropping and enlarging. For everyday purposes, 3Mp will get you perfectly adequate 6x4 or 5x7 photos, but 5Mp gives you just that bit more versatility.
The automatic exposure settings are fine, and I use them regularly for most of ... ...want to I can get aperture priority, shutter priority or full manual settings. The settings to increase or decrease the exposure by up to 3 stops is very handy too. The autobracketing function is useful too so you have no excuse for getting the exposure wrong! The one limitation for very specialist photography i.e. night shots is that there is no 'B' setting which keeps the shutter open for as long as you hold down the button, but I can count the ...

Advantages: Takes great photographs, easy to use. Disadvantages: A bit Heavy, and lens is a bit slow opening.
I bought this camera last year and have taken it on a number of holidays. The camera is easy carried (usually in my bum bag) and easily operated. Prior to buying this camera I had an SLR, but I now have similar wuality pictures and have less to carry. One thing I would recommend is that a case is bought for the camera as the LCD screen hag got scored in the bum bag.
The picture quality from this camera is exceptional and I have printed FULL size ... ...The software which comes with the camera is easy to use and is quick to allow the pictures to be downloaded. The larger the picture size the slower it is transfered. Once on the computer the images can be altered and a good range of effects can be obtained.
ALL in all I am very pleased with this camere and would reocmmend it to both a novice and established used of a digital camera. ...

Manufacturer's product description
Stylish, pocket size fully featured digital camera. With 13 flexible shooting modes and new Canon technologies, this is the ideal camera for taking photos in all situations. The PowerShot S50 is a versatile digital camera featuring a high quality 5.0-megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens. Although stylish and compact, the features of this camera are aimed at advanced amateur users with 13 shooting modes and full manual controls for exposure and focusing. The PowerShot S50 incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 5.0 effective megapixels (approximately 5.3 megapixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. The PowerShot S50 features a highly compact and sharp 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.9 (telephoto). RAW mode allows you to obtain original image data, recording the image direct from the CCD without any image processing. The PowerShot S50 has 13 shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, including full manual controls, and a 'Custom' mode enabling you to set and save the camera parameters. The PowerShot S50 incorporates the DIGIC processor for even better color reproduction. The PowerShot S50 supports PTP, a standard protocol. This allows driver-less image communications with computers when combined with recent operating systems (Windows XP or Mac OS). A computer using this system will automatically select the correct drivers for the camera without needing to install them. On older operating systems a driver is still required to be installed. The PowerShot S50 is equipped with Direct Print which allows easy high-quality printing by simply connecting the camera via a cable to a CP-100 Card Photo printer or to the range of bubble jet direct printers. When the PowerShot S50 is connected to the CP-100, bordered or borderless prints can be selected and a trimming function allows a portion of a picture to be expanded and printed. Simple and quick direct printing is possible with the dedicated Card Photo Printers, producing images of 300 x 300 dpi on a credit card size or 4 x 6" print. The PowerShot S50 is compatible with Bubble Jet Direct Printers connecting direct via a cable and controlled by the camera through the direct print screen. Images can be printed onto A4 size paper to 6" x 4" sized paper.
