I have been a pretty keen photographer for many years, the last digital camera I had was a Canon G3, it was only 4 megapixels, but the quality was outstanding, far superior to my mates 8mp Fuji. I went to Silverstone last year for the F1 practice, and got some great action shots of the cars, my only disappointment was the limited optical zoom (3x) on the G3. I decided there and then, that the time was right to upgrade, I had no hesitation in choosing Canon again, and went for the then newly released S5 IS. WOW, this camera is amazing, the zoom,12x optical & 4x digital, giving a total of 48x zoom is exactly what I needed, the optical zoom alone gives a 35mm SLR equivelant of 36-432 mm !!! You would imagine that with such a massive zoom, camera shake would be a problem, however due to the image stabiliser, it isn't, I have taken many pictures, hand held, on full zoom, and had not a hint of camera shake. The quality of the image is not onl determined by the number of pixels a camera has, equally important is the diameter of the lens, a larger optical opening will always give a better picture than a small one, for example, compare an 8mp camera with a large optical opening, like the S5, to a camera phone also with 8mp, but with a much smaller lens, the difference is staggering when you think they both have the same number of pixels, this is why a small pocket-size camera, can never compete with something like this, regardless of number of pixels. Another really cool thing about this camera is the fact that as well as having a built-in, pop-up flash, it also has a hot shoe, so it can take an external professional flash too. I could go on all day about the many excellent features of this camera, but in a nutshell, all you need to know is that it is easy to use, relatively compact camera with excellent zoom, brilliant picture quality, and it is made by Canon, nuff said.
