The Canon Powershot SX110 IS is a pretty big camera compared to some on the market. It is around 11cm by 7cm and feels quite large in your hands, although this does make it feel sturdy and strongly built. Despite the size, it fits into your hands rather smoothly and is fairly comfortable to hold. It weighs in at around 300g which is quite heavy but once again makes it feel strong. It is too large to keep it comfortably in your pocket and so the wrist strap comes in handy. (A neck strap would be a nice addition though). I was told you can also purchase a pouch for it to clip on to your belt. You can get to the buttons, pop up flash light and battery space easily and they are all well made and strong. The battery space holds two AA battery's and they are easy to change compared to some cameras which are fiddly or the battery's get stuck in too tight. As with most modern cameras, there is a viewing screen. This particular screen is a 3" LCD screen with wide viewing angle. The screen takes up quite a bit of the back of the camera and so when you hold it, you have to accomodate for that. You can view everything very well on this and there is no need for any change. The camera is designed for a comfortable hold for someone right handed. Most things are designed this way but my mum, who has got used to using things right handed, seemed to have a bit of trouble because of having to accomodate for the screen as well as the right handed design. This is the main problem with the deisgn, but can be adapted to and is a common problem with cameras and camcorders in particular.
Working
The main points when buying a digital camera are pretty simple; how good is the picture quality, is it easy to use and is it good value for money? To answer the first question, the quality is great. This is a 9.0 mega pixel camera with 10x Optical zoom. It has other features to improve the quality and fix little problems. It has a "Image Stabilizer" that stops any hand shaking from affecting the photo and stopping blurring. This makes a pretty big difference and helps make your snaps clearer. The camera has 20 shooting modes and it is designed to be used by everyone from photography virgins to experts. They have covered people's range of skills well and this makes the photos even better. I simply use the "Easy mode" which limits the decisions you have to make such as lighting adjustments (You can make all these little adjustments yourself if you set it in that mode.) It's covered for use by anyone and supports 25 languages including one i've never heard of, "Farsi". It really looks like Canon are trying to cover everything. It holds all sorts of memory cards namely; SD, SDHC, MMC and MMCplus. The camera will also film short movie clips that are of good quality and a nice addition to the camera. The value for money issue has no definate answer. If you are buying this to be taken out each Christmas, then it is quite a bit of money and would require a bit of thinking about, but as a camera that would get regular use, it has a lot of features and is worth the price you pay.
