Canon Powershot SX1 IS
This camera has features including a 10 Megapixel- 1/2.3-inch CCD- DIGIC 4 Image ... more
Processor- 20x optical zoom lens with a shift-type optical Image Stabilizer (IS) system and 2.8-inch widescreen LCD monitor with wide viewing angle. It uses 4 AA batteries to shoot up to approx. 160 images (based on the CIPA standard when the LCD monitor is on)- and SD memory cards- SDHC memory cards- MultiMediaCards- MMCplus cards and HC MMCplus cards for the recording media. Images are utilized with a direct print compatible printer- computer and TV via Hi-Speed USB. The dimensions (excluding protrusions) of the main body are 127.5 x 88.3 x 87.7 mm (5.0 x 3.5 x 3.5 in.) and the weight is approximately 585 g (20.6 oz.).
lens with twentyfold optical zoom shot. The high performance buffer memory made possible thereby quick row photographs with up to 4 pictures/second. Movie clips can be made as high-quality Full HD videos (1080, 30p), which can be shown afterwards over the HDMI™ connection on a HD broad picture television with Stereo sound in CD quality. Owing to innovative technologies and optimized process parameter the DIGIC 4 provides for an outstanding image processing and a minimized picture noise. Besides this DIGIC 4 ensures a first-class speed of operation and a fast readiness of application. Innovative Canon Face Detection AF/AE/FE/WB technology takes care of simple, spontaneous person photographs even from far distant motives . By the function " Face selection and - after introduction" the adjustments for the selected person are sequentially automatically optimized. With the Face-self release you make playing easy for group photographs, with which you are also in the picture. Blurs due to shaking belong to the power SHOT SX1 IS owing to " High ISO Auto" and Motion Detection technology of the past. During this, Camera and motive movement are determined and the optimal ISO attitude is determined in each photograph adjustment. In the admission and rendition mode i-Contrast adapts to the brightness automatically. The result: optimal contrast and detail brilliance also with difficult lighting conditions. Trick and tiltable 2.8-inch-LCD facilitates photography from difficult points of view and a comfortable view of the pictures during the rendition. Ideally for good legibility with weak light: the Night display mode.

The Canon Powershot SX1 IS seems to offer the impossible, read the reviews and it seems image quality is great, the lens has an amazing range of 28-560mm, its image stabilised, its got high quality move mode, ...
Having taken about 500 pictures with it so far I am not that impressed.
Take the camera out of the box charge some batteries add an SD card and see what you have got. The lens diameter is miniscule when compared to an SLR , nothing unexpected or revolutionary there then, so don't expect superb image quality especially in low light. Read the manual, er it looks ever so complicated, so lets try taking some pictures as I have already charged a set of batteries. There is the regulation set of modes, (P,Tv,Av,M,C) plus movie and a set of specials. So lets try Av (aperture priority) and shoot a squirrel in a reasonably well lit woodland setting - result useless. Change to Tv (Shutter Priority) - not really any better, its still a very dark image which doesn't stand up to processing in Photoshop. Night Scene? that gives a tolerable image. Change the settings to over expose a bit, that gives a lighter image but some is over exposed and overall image quality is still poor. Maybe it really only works with AUTO mode unless you are prepared to spend time altering settings and doing lots of tests. Oh well, lets read the manual and play with the settings, now where is that CD?. Manual is a bit better than some but then its not easy to find how to do some pretty straightforward things, and being on CD you can't just mark the most useful pages. Okay I understand the important bits, lets take some more pictures. Lots of images are out of focus and I can see this on the LCD screen if I blow the image up to maximum. Better use the screen instead of the viewfinder even for large things that I can see through the viewfinder. Some shots of our road in the snow - gosh they are quite good! Through the double glazing - useless just can't get it to focus on anything but the glass, I guess that is the downside have a camera that can focus on really close objects (but note that I did not set macro mode) Movie mode through double glazing, that works okay. Through a telescope on a tripod through double glazing, awkward but using Night Scene and Macro I get a reasonable image. A thrush in a tree from thirty feet (10 metres), well one shot out of three is okay (the other two it focussed on the branch and the bird was out of focus). Outside of a church on a dull day, poor grainy images, On nice bright days images are quite good. Indoors image quality and colours vary a lot and you cannot always tell from the LCD screen that images are too blurred to use. On balance AUTO seems the best all round choice unless you are prepared to do a lot of tests and spend time setting up each set of shots.
On the negative side:: 1. Over complicated to use if you want to change any settings - compare it with a digital SLR like the Canon 5d and you will see what I mean. 2. Viewfinder is virtually useless for anything other than landscapes. It is dark and impossible to see detail, you have a 560mm telephoto lens and its impossible to see let alone focus upon a bird in a tree even at 50-100 feet. So using the LCD screen is a must, and that is a pain if you are used to a camera with a decent viewfinder and it will drain the batteries. 3. My suspicion is that if light is poor you need to use a tripod or hold the camera very still and set the ASA rating to 1600 unless you use AUTO or an appropriate scene mode. 4. No RAW format support, the JPEGs come out around 2MB even in Large mode, so it may have 10MB sensor but it doesn't save that quality of image. 5. No software provided to do even basic editing of movies, not even a suggestion of what might support the high-definition format. 6. no SD card supplied
On the plus side: 1. Indoors it can be quite good, like the Panasonic FZ50 it can do a good job particularly if you use the flash (on the Panasonic and probably the SX1 it doesn't seem to matter that the flash doesn't really light the subject, it just handles it) . 2. It does have a really good telephoto range 28-560. 3. It can produce decent movies. 4. It does focus really close, but you will probably need to use flash to take shots of insects (or whatever) that are really close to the lens. 5. You can change lots of settings - just may take you a while to work out how you do it, and it takes too long. 6. It is small enough to pack with a small telescope in hand luggage for plane travel - my 300m Canon lens takes up so much room that I have never been able to take a telescope on a plane. 7. You can attach it to a telescope and get decent images, I found macro in Night Scene worked okay - it will probably over expose otherwise. 8. Handling of images on the SD card is way ahead of my Canon 5D - you can delete the entire contents of individual folders - high on my wish list and especially valuable if you have bought a 16GB SD card - it automatically creates new folders to hold images and you can tell it how often it should do this - weekly daily, .... - another high on my wish list
Recommendations - if you don't need the long telephoto choose something else. The IXUS 950IS produces superior images with easier to use controls (though it doesn't remember macro which is a pain) but is only a 28-140 lens. If you don't have any long lens and are going somewhere exotic to see wildlife, it is a cheap way of getting some pictures but do not expect the image quality to be better than mediocre for distant objects and practice focussing before you go!
Advantages: ability to shoot at any condition, user friendly and auto zoom Disadvantages: very expensive, might be stolen
I have been a Canon camera user in my college days. With Canon camera, you can be sure that every shot really counts. Its resolution is crystal clear and the photo captures vivid description of the subject.
For all these years, Canon have had always gone with the latest high-tech fad in photography. Its Canon PowerShot SX1 IS speaks of Canon's eccentric character as a digital camera in the cutting edge of high quality performance. Its auto focus ... ...manufacturers envy.
Since time immemorial, Canon has preserved excellence, quality and efficiency in photography, either still or digital, next to none. The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS speaks of Canon's highly discriminating taste in photography whether for casual or travel photography.
Canon, however, is hard to acquire. With its very restrictively expensive price, anyone who can possessed Canon camera is an object of jealousy. Probably, Canon camera ...

Advantages: high quality, good zoom Disadvantages: difficult for beginers
The Canon powershot SX1 IS is a gem of a product. It features the latest in technology and design and has awesome picture clarity. Although it can be a bit daunting to use for a newcomer, this thing works like magic once you get used to it. I found it very good to shoot moving images and it hardly gave me any blur effect.
The camera features a 10 megapixel with 20X optical zoom and shoots at 4 frames per second which is very good. I had a beautiful ... ...a product and that one picture alone negates any of the discomfort that you might find initially from using this product. This one's a stealer at 512 pounds so I suggest you get your hands on this one as fast as possible or gift it to your beloved and you'll see the extra love and affection that you'll get :)
So guys go ahead and grab this one along for its sheer beauty and powerful performance ...

This camera is not released yet so the 'review' already here is a piece of fluffy nonsense I'm afraid. Wait for a review from someone who has actually got the camera - which won't be until December.

Advantages: Offers a non DSLR option to people ready to move beyond point and shoot. Disadvantages: Too many limits to make it a real option to serious photographers.
...to change lenses and play around with every setting to get the correct image then this bridge camera by Fujifilm could be just for you but if you are trying to move on to the pro scene or attempt to make money from your photography then you will be fighting a losing battle without a DSLR as those with one will always be a good few steps in front of you.
Ok so you are decided and it is definitely a bridge camera that you want then as I mentioned earlier there is not another out there that can compete with this one on price although the new CanonPowerShotSX1ISis a far better unit it costs around twice the price and when you start talking about £400 for a bridge camera it seems crazy when you can get a beginner level DSLR and a telephoto lens for around a hundred pound more.
So as a bridge camera let me point out what is good about...

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The camera came out in July 2007 so it's still rather new but hard, almost impossible, to find in shops because it was succeeded by
CanonPowerShotSX1IS/CanonPowerShotSX10 IS and when companies want to sell a new product they just stop selling the old one.
I made my purchase on ebay stealing a deal for 210 euro (around £180) still in guarantee for 10 months. New it would cost £300-£350. Definitely an expensive purchase. These cameras don't come exactly cheap and what's worse they don't come at all since it's almost impossible to find them. Nonetheless you might still find shops that still have them in stock and perhaps also discounted.
When new the guarantee is only 1 year but sometimes you can find them with 5 years guarantee extension. Beware though, if you buy it with 1 year standard guarantee you won...
