On such cameras these focal lengths can give an angle of view approximately equivalent to that of a 28-70mm lens used on a 35mm camera, which makes it the ideal standard zoom lens. Super Spectra Coating on the elements ensures excellent colour balance and minimizes ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over a 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements of two different types while Super Ultra-low Dispersion glass is used to prevent aberrations that can degrade the clarity. The Auto-focus works silently and quickly thanks to a fast central processing unit and you can override AF mode with manual focus should you wish. Its circular aperture can also achieve a more attractive appearance to out of focus background areas in a picture. Minimum focusing distance is just 28mm throughout the entire zoom range. This is a good quality product that offers good value for money in the very short term. Although as with most products of this type, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. It's a great device with plenty of features that I would highly recommend. This really is a wonderful piece of kit that should go well with many accessories because it really looks good. After using this product for a few months I have not so far come up against any reliability issues but only time will tell. I therefore would recommend the product. However, always think carefully as to whether you actually really need something before you buy it. We buy so many things nowadays that we don't really need.

Advantages: Solid build, great image quality, super-wide view Disadvantages: f4 aperture doesn't give very deep bokeh
...be used on all the Canon bodies. My friend had an EF-S 10-22mm but this became redundant when he upgraded his body from a 20D to a 5D.

This lens is well up there on the build quality, having all the great hall marks of the L Series - great optics, solid construction, low distortion, constant aperture at any focal length and weather-proofing courtesy of o-ring seals on the body join and a non-extending barrel when ... ...the series, this is a very compact and light weight unit and the controls are very slick with a great feel to the zoom ring and full-time manual focus ring (so you can use it to adjust focus even when in AF mode).
The front element does not rotate when focussing so you can use filters easily.
One beef I had was that you don't get a lens shade with this lens as standard. The 24-105 and 70-200 by comparision do come with a shade. Even though the ...

Advantages: Good quality glass, top spec consrtuction. Disadvantages: Maybe price, but not as expensive as the f2.8
...only just started using the Canon 17-40, but it looks and feels very competent, and the images are lovely, lots of contrast.
I would have liked the 17-35 f2.8L lens of course, but there's the little fact of a few hundred quid more, even for a second hand example, so I've settled for an f stop less, not much on a wide lens, I will probably be using a tripod much of the time anyway.
Never having owned a Canon L lens before (exept the built in one ... ...am imressed by the small touches, like the rubber 'o ring' on the lens bayonet that seals against the camera lens mount to keep out moisture and dust, I also like the smooth zoom action, easy to use with finger tips. The lens isn't actually as heavy as I had expected, and the casing seems to be plastic, not metal, but I'm comparing it with my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 which is a big heavy lens !

This new and affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens is ideal for both film and digital SLRs. Superior optics are assured by the use of three aspherical lens elements, in addition to a Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass element. Optical coatings are optimized for use with digital cameras. This lens focuses as close as 11 inches (0.28m), and offers both Canon's full-time manual focus and a powerful ring-type USM for fast and silent AF. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. Finally, it offers weather-resistant construction similar to other high-end L-series lenses.
