The noise level is improved making it a better performer in low light conditions over the previous model the XL1.
The shoulder mount proves very handy and was put to great use when used in the filming of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later in 2002. With London appearing to be deserted the crew had to clear streets of people and film in next to no time and needed a camera that was light, durable and the best broadcast quality, the XL1S was their choice.
The XL1S also offers complete shutter and aperture priority controls, 3 shooting modes which are Field Movie, Frame movie and Photo and has 4 channel synchronisec recording/playback with audio system.
The battery life of the XL1S is ok with the standard battery included in the box. The BP930 will give around 1 hours use on full charge as there is no LCD screen disply to use the extra power. An LCD screen is available to buy at extra cost and will fit on where the existing eye piece attaches/dettaches. The extended life batteries are also available and can come in very handy! Additional batteries come at the cost of £60 upwards depending on duration desired.
Inside the box the accessories you'll find are likely to include; Remote Control, Compact Power Adapter, Shoulder Strap, Shoulder Pad, S-Video Cable, Scart Adapter, BP930 Battery Pack and Microphone unit.
The only downside i've ever found with this camera is that sometimes when recording in very quiet/silent conditions the tape mechanism can be heard whirring on the recording. This may depend on brand of tapes as it never happened with Sony tapes only Maxell.
The cost for such an outstanding unit when it was new to the market was around £3495 but it can now be found for around £1575
Advantages: Easy to master, cheap to purchase, accepts most accecories (ie lens, matte box) Disadvantages: Microphone not great, better to use a seperate on a boom.
...'amateur film' and using the CANON XL1S to shoot it I can honestly say I am in a good position to review this item. Using this camera to shoot with was an absolute joy. Its light enough to be carried around for some good steadicam shots but stable enough when on a tripod that it isn't ruining your long or medium coverage.
The inputs and output connection points are all clearly marked so as not to confuse in poor light or dark surroundings and when ... ...obvious to any first timer if you are properly connected or not.
The camera itself is easy to use. The tape draw is easier to open, load and then close without interfering with any of your previous settings so as not to ruin continuity of shots. All the cameras many options and menu items are easy to find and clearly labeled for when you want to change to 16:9 or film in black and white etc.
This camera is a must buy for any filmmaker on a tight ...

...The successor to the Canon XL1 is a brilliant camera, although in my opinion not worth the extra cost above the XL1 price. As far as functionality goes I have struggled to find a great deal of difference between the two models.
One problem that did occur with an XL1S that I have used was the motor on the lens malfunctioning meaning zoom and focus operations failed. This caused a major problem and on further investigation I was informed that this ...

I have used this camcorder for filming both corporate events and short films and for both it excelled. The camcorder produces excellent broadcast quality images and has full manual control over the image or can be set to full auto for less experienced users.
Canon offer a wide range of accessories for the XL1s for the professional filmaker, these include a full manual lens, XLR audio adapter, black and white CRT viewfinder and many more. The camera is easy to use and is fairly lghtweight and portable which makes it ideal for electronic news gathering.
The only issue I have with this camera is the slow autofocus speed, however unless you are doing very fast panning shots this is not a problem.
In all a very good camcorder from Canon. ...

Ever since the digital revolution began i have been waiting for a camcorder like this one. The previous model by canon(DM-XL1s) was good but this on is absolutely stupendous and even though i believe that digital camcorders can get better than this, at this point of time , there are very few prosumer camcorders that can beat this particular model in this price range. The DM-XM2 is a professional 3ccd camcorder meant for the budding filmaker or semiprofessional and not for the average home user unless u are a home user who can afford this baby. This cam has excellent colur fidelity and the image quality is beautiful. Throw in with that extensive manual control, a fabulous 20x optical zoom, canons reliable optics, 2 channel audio control and a very light body that makes making professional quality movies a painless task.
