This is the professional photographer's portrait zoom lens of choice. The constant F/2.8 aperture across the zoom range provides excellent performance in low-light, and the best control over depth of field in any zoom lens on the market today.
Lens performance is exemplary. If you take the time to use the full time manual focus, pictures of exceptional sharpness can be achieved at any aperture. Some users complain of getting "soft" copies of the lens, but always refer to the excellent and free Canon service of calibration (within warranty). My own lens doesn't suffer from this, I have to say, and I do wonder whether some photographers claim that they're not getting a "sharp copy" when they're not taking the time to focus properly.
Commonly referred to as "the brick" amongst Canon users, this lens is noted for its heft. It weighs over a pound, but attached to any camera with two digits or less in its designation, it feels very right, and me marking it as "heavy" should not be seen as a bad sign. (In fact, the star ratings seemed a little odd, so you should focus on the "Excellent" rating.
The included hood is massive, but cleverly designed, since the lens "reverse extends". The lens is longer when zoomed to 24mm, and shortens as the zoom length increases. It's a good design. The filter thread is the standard for L zooms at 77mm, so any filters you've bought for other zooms will fit.
I own this and the longer 24-105 F/4 IS L, and they're both quite different lenses. The longer lens is a more versatile "travel" lens, whereas the 24-70 is perfect for indoor and outdoor portraits, at parties, weddings etc. I wouldn't be without it.
Except I am, because I dropped it from 3 feet onto a wooden floor, and now it won't focus any more. I'm sending it to Canon for a repair. Should cost around £100, according to reports on the internet.
So, in summary. It's big and heavy, and it takes some practice to get the best out of it. But when you do, its colour and sharpness are something to behold. Excellent indeed.
Advantages: Build quality. Compact. Weight. Optical quality. Image Stabilisation. Disadvantages: Barrel distortion and Chromatic Aberration at 24mm
...I purchased this lens brand new to accompany my then new Canon EOS 5D around 18 months ago. I have to confess, I spent over two weeks prior to making my purchases deciding just which lens I should choose as my 'standard' zoom - this, or the also highly regarded Canon EF 24-70mmf/2.8 USM. In the end, I chose the 24-105 for reasons which I will divulge as we go along.
This lens is designed primarily for use on FF (Full Frame) DSLR's or 35mm film SLR cameras, the 4.4x zoom range presenting a somewhat less attractive 39-168mm focal length range when used on Canon APS-C DSLR camera due of course, to the 1.6x crop factor of the smaller sensor. The range of this lens covers all the most popular focal lengths within it's range and of course, in a completely stepless and smooth transition from serious wide angle, through to what might be...

The Zoom Lens EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM was developed as the successor to the EF28-70mm f/2.8L Featuring a new optical system design, the new zoom lens delivers an expanded zoom range with a 24 mm wide-angle focal length, ideally suiting it to digital image sizes, while also maintaining or improving on the outstanding image quality of the superseded model. Moreover, the power of the focusing lens group has been increased to allow a minimum focusing distance of just 0.38 meters, the shortest in its class at the time, throughout the entire zoom range. The new EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM also features a circular diaphragm, to give better background blur, and utilizes only lead-free glass optics in consideration of the environment.
