That was of particular interest to me because I'd found a two for one offer at inkfactory.com that only applied to those two makes.
True, the cartridges are smaller than those in my previous printer, but this is more than offset by being able to order, say, two black cartridges and get two more free - all for under £19.
Once upon a time, I was sittng here at my PC at 2.00 in the morning when suddenly there was an earthquake.
The walls shook. The furniture danced. Everyone went out into the street thinking that a 'plane had come down on their house.
The Canon i455 sounds similar.

I've had quieter motorbike accidents.
So you'll no doubt be surprised to learn that I bought this printer deliberately even though I'd read that it was a bit of a Ginger Baker in reviews.
There was method to my madness, however.
Let me explain.
My previous printer was an HP inkjet which was capable of producing very good photo quality prints. It had to in order make all the tenners to pay for the incredibly expensive ink-cartridges!
I realised that there was little point in having all that quality if I couldn't afford to use it. That's why I happily sold it to a friend at the first opportunity.
I'd been looking at the price of cartridges on the internet and I soom discovered that it was possible to get photo-quality prints from the Canon i455 and, indeed, from Epson printers.
That was of particular interest to me because I'd found a two for one offer at inkfactory.com that only applied to those two makes.
True, the cartridges are smaller than those in my previous printer, but this is more than offset by being able to order, say, two black cartridges and get two more free - all for under £19.
I'm sure that there are lots of other places with great deals online too. Prink.co.uk do packs of three cartridges for only £5.95 black and £6.95 colour.
I'd be happier about that last bit of info if I'd realised it before I'd ordered the double-packs just twenty minutes ago!
The point is that the Canon i455 is really cheap to run. You could spend more on a packet of smelly cigarettes than you have to for these cartridges.
And the lovely thing is that the performance of this printer is fine. I have walls filled with framed A4 photographs of the family visiting castles, skiing, smiling insanely and dribbling - and they all look vivid and colourful.
The results depend rather a lot on the paper you use. This will be true of most printers but if you didn't know about it I'll mention it briefly here.
Normal paper for a printer is coarse and absorbent which lets the ink dots spread out like blots on blotting paper. The result is blurred and unimpressive. If you get high-definition paper the quality goes way up because it doesn't blot in the same way. For the very best result you need glossy paper on which pictures look superb.
I read somewhere that Canon ink is likely to degrade with prolonged contact with the air. Usually one might expect light to cause photo degradation. Quite honestly, I don't worry about this because if ever a picture rotted into a faded heap I'd just print a new one at these prices. Everything is backed up on CD.
So even though you'd think my room had been taken over by clockwork mice every time I want to print an absence note for one of the children, the quality of the pictures and text from the i455 are great, and the cartridges are - as a great Duke once said - 'as cheap as chips.'.
I'd recommend this to anyone deaf or interested in percussion. It will make lovely pictures on the right paper, and you'll never have to worry about the kids printing out (as my daughter once did) every image they can find of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to decorate a wall of their bedroom.
At the time of this review the i455 is available from Comet at £59.99.
Here's a perfect opportunity to irritate the neighbours and surround yourself with memories of your holidays at the same time.
Advantages: Price,Easy to use, Great print quality Disadvantages: No usb cable.
...this is for attaching a canon or a compatible digital camera which has PictBridge capability. NOTE! this product does not come with a USB cable so if you are interested in getting one of these printers you will have to buy a cable first.
But what it does have in its package is , a very handy pack of 5 mini photo glossy papers, a colour and a black cartridge.
And a nice software package including,
CANON EASY WEB PRINT, this programme integrates ... ...easy to use applications to , need I say make printing web pages easier.
Now the next two programmes confuse me a bit ( yes this is my only gripe with this product)
EASY PHOTO PRINT PLUS , this programme has all the utilities an amateur photographer like me needs to enhance my photos in easy to use steps i.e. red eye reduction ( the easiest and best I've ever used), auto focus, colour balance etc.
Now here's the confusing bit you then have to ...

...buttons are its eyes, the Canon logo is its nose and the flip-down paper tray is its mouth) Then when you flip down the paper tray, it looks like it is smiling! Okay, the cuteness factor of the design coupled with my strange imagination won me over a bit, but there is more to come.
Apart from the puppy dog thing, the design is pretty nifty. It sits comfortably on my desktop without taking up too much room. The paper tray as mentioned before flips ... ...the front of printer, saving space and keeping out dust. When unloaded, the paper feeder can flip down too so it rests on top of the printer, but it doesn't seal it against dust, so it does need occaisional dusting from the top. It is quite compact for its price range but not compact like the latest little tiny printers.
The printer comes with an easy to follow instruction manual complete with Kinder Egg-like diagrams that had me set up in minutes, ...

Advantages: Excellent print quality, cheap to run Disadvantages: A tad noisy
...I managed to install the canon software in no time. The canon printing software has some new features to it such as a 'quiet' mode, special effects where you can add monochrome type effect to photos (such as sepia, etc) and the usual ink level monitoring /cleaning head stuff you expect to find. The i455 comes with Pictbridge functionality which allows you to directly plug your camera into it and print off photos direct. I don’t have a pictbridge ... ...how crisp text came out. Canon states this baby can do a whopping 18ppm black and 12ppm colour. I found that for pure text printing, the i455 flies, but printing pure colour is a tad slow. I suppose it all depends what quality you’re printing at, and with all printers, if your printing at max resolution (4800x1200 DPI no less!), the ppm will drop significantly. In its defence though, I found that it could handle pretty much anything that I threw ...

Advantages: compact design, price of the cartridges, quality and more Disadvantages: it broke down after years of usage but, which appliance doesn't?
...quite fast, fully compatible with canon cameras for direct printing, very good quality in photo printing. Easy to set up and not invasive software (like many Epsons). This printer served me for several years, when it broke down after not having been used it for months, it broke my heart. I loved this printer but the cost of repairing was more than the price of a brand new multifunction printer (which I bought in the end), I couldn't find this model ... ...the compact design of this Canon printer which took soo few space on my desk. All newer printers seems to priviledge an office-like wasting space design. It's a shame that Canon doesn't sell this model so much anymore. I couldn't vote it EXCELLENT because afterall it broke down but a "GOOD" is needed for this product. ...
