As I was browsing about the home page looking for a suitable product to review I came across the credit card section. One of my first ops was on Egg and since then I have acquired another. I know some of you may be saying, why 2 cards, well actually I have 3 but that’s another story. I no longer need to but getting a new card means that sometimes you can transfer balances to another card for 0% interest for usually 3 months. Very handy if you need time to find the money to pay off a balance. In some instances this could be a saving of hundreds if you have a high balance.
Now to the Capitol One card. There are four cards and depending on your credit history and your income there is one for you. There is the Platinum, Premier and Classic. There is one more and that is the Lifestyle card, this is for anything from cat lovers to football lovers and can be used by people with good credit history or ones that need to build theirs up.
I needed to transfer my balance from Bank of Scotland to a card that gave me some months of interest free. I applied to several and was being turned down, as I am not a high earner. One day an advert popped up on screen and it was for Capitol One. The web site was simple to understand and I decided to apply on line. It asked me if I wished to transfer any outstanding balances off and there was a section for me to put in all my amounts I wished to transfer. This I did thinking that they would issue card and then ask me to transfer. Wrong!
I waited for a couple of weeks and a letter arrived from them to say I had been accepted in principal and would inform me at a later date of there decision. True to word another letter arrived and informed me that I was now the owner of a Premium card with a credit limit of £2300. I opened the web site as instructed and checked my account details. I was most surprised to see that they had already transferred my balance from my other card. Great I thought, this saves me work.
I am a silly soul sometimes and do not always read the agreement details but something made me take a good look. Now was I surprised to see that they were not giving me 3 months interest free but were going to charge me 16.9% APR or 1.31% monthly? I found out that you only get that sort of deal with a Platinum card. I am a bit miffed by now and realise that I will be paying more in interest than my old card. Yes I would be getting 0% on purchases for 3 months and then paying 13.9% APR on purchases but unless I could get rid of my starting balance I would be financially worse off.
Fortunately I had an ISA so I cashed it in and paid off the card. I noticed recently that they are now advertising a rate of 6.9% for the duration of the advance, which seems a reasonable deal. My entire fault I suppose for not reading things properly.
Now some details.
Capitol is now with Mastercard. (The above picture says Visa) No annual fee. 0% on first 3 months purchases. 6.9% on balance transfers fixed for the life of balance. Balances can be transferred from other cards and store cards. 13.9% on purchases after 3 months. No Internet fraud liability if your account number is used without your authority. Can be used to make cash withdrawals from any machine carrying the Mastercard logo. 20.5% on cash withdrawals. All rates are variable. Capital One also does savings and travel insurance. Penalties. Late or failure to pay - £20. Overlimit-£20. Returned cheque-£20. Over limit charge-£20. Foreign currency charge-2.75%.

All in all not a bad credit card company as they seem to keep up with change but unlike me check before you sign
Advantages: The only card that help one rebuilt credit Disadvantages: Very high APR
...many other members have mentioned, Capital One Premier is a good card for people who have no credit history and wish to get a credit card so that their credit performance can be properly recorded.
I will keep it brief here due to limited space and for ease of update reason. http://www.mycoupon.freeuk.com/creditscoring.htm
The sceneario in UK is very much different from the USA where there are many secured credit cards where one can deposit some ... ...those cards anymore. Therefore, Capital One is now the only credit issuer in UK who will issue a credit card to anyone regardless of credit history by setting the suitable APR.
The whole game about credit scoring is all about having some history being recorded in the credit reference agency file. And Capital One Bank is brilliant in this area as they diligently report your credit performance to the credit reference agency. So, if you maintain your ...

...less than financially astute!
CAPITAL ONE basically aim at the lower end of the market - for people who can't get a credit card anywhere else. They also offer a ‘Platinum’ card, but in all honesty, If you are of the kind of financial standing and awareness to warrant a ‘Platinum’ card, then you will be looking at places other than Capital one to provide your facilities.
These are the kind of cards that you get after persistent ‘junk’ mailings. ... ...on the ‘credit ladder’.
Capital One offer two cards - the Platinum which I mentioned briefly above and the Premier. It is the Premier that is designed for the less financially responsible of us/you. You are guaranteed a credit limit of between £200 and £1000 - not much, but enough to get you started and enable the user to show that he or she is now responsible enough for a credit card.
They make it very easy for you to apply. The application form ...

Advantages: Still thinking... Disadvantages: General incompetance of staff and poor product
...This statement sums up Capital One better than any other I can think of. I have always paid my credit cards on time due to the charges that you incur if you miss a payment. I have found Capital One to be extremely unaccommodating to any requests or problems I have and therefore set up a payment through my bank to make sure that Capital One always got the bare minimum that they required. However, according to a Capital One customer services representative, ... ...another £18 was charged. Capital One charge their customers £18 fortnightly when they are over their limit, unfortunately I did not realise what had happened for fifteen days, so, yes, another £18 was added. After discussing this situation with a customer accounts manager, I was told that it was ‘unfortunate that things were a bit slower’ over Christmas, but that there was nothing he could do, despite the fact that I had allowed more ...

...That is until I discovered Capital One, this company specialises in supplying credit cards to those of us who have never had credit or for people with poor credit history's. I applied and was duly accepted for their card, although it comes at a price. The yearly fee is £18 and the Apr is much higher than normal credit card companies, but I suppose this is how they offset their losses when they take on dodgy customers who don't pay their bills.

...come through the post from Capital One, for both of my sons who had rather shot themselves in the foot with injudicious use (to put it mildly) of their first credit cards. Fine so they were both 18, had a bit of money to spend, but they both looked upon the credit limits given to them by their Miidland Bank mastercard as a 'bonus'. They forgot that once they'd used it - they had to pay it back.

period ends. These are the banks which offer better or the same rates as Egg Visa:
Cahoot Visa 8 per cent
Intelligent Finance Classic Visa 9.6 per cent
Halifax Classic MasterCard 10.8 per cent
Hamilton Direct Bank Visa 11.9 per cent
Lloyds TSB Asset Advance MasterCard 11.9 per cent
CapitalOnePremier MasterCard 12.9 per cent
First Direct Interent Visa 12.9 per cent
First Trust Bank Visa 12.9 per cent
Egg does not have an expensive branch network to maintain and should be up there with internet rival Cahoot. With only 2,000 employees and three offices (London, Dudley and Derby), It should easily outstrip High Street giants Halifax and Lloyds TSB.
Even if you pay your credit card bill in full every month (and the APR is not of prime concern), the perks with an Egg card aren't that great.
There is no annual fee but you only ...

.9% on amounts transferred from other cards. This may not be the most competitive offer. For instance, with Sony Visa credit card you get a balance transfer rate of 2.9% APR for the first five months, without mentioning Egg Visa credit card or CapitalOnePremier mastercard that offer a balance transfer rate of 0% APR for the first six months.
The other rates: the standard APR is 12.9% (variable) on purchases made and 14.6% (variable) for any cash advances. The credit card is welcomed anywhere where the Mastercard logo is displayed (i.e, at over 21 million outlets worldwide - did you know that?).

to keep to their promise was CapitalOne. I started with a limit of £200 and after 18months I had worked my way to £1000. All I had to do was pay my bill on time!

Ok so what's the catch?
I would love to say there isn't one but unfortunately there is and its very subtle.
Going back to point three on my good list, you will see that your credit limit goes up every so often. The bad part of this is that when you reach a certain level they tell you they are upgrading your card to a 'Premier Card'.
