Now I don't drink very much these days - honest - it's not nice to have a hangover with a 3 year old getting you up at 6 in the morning but Morgans Spiced Rum is worth a tipple or two if you are indulging and I do sometimes have a couple if we have friends over or at a barbecue. Warms you up the way this summer has been.

First of all it's 35% vol and you can buy the 70cl bottle for around £12.50 or if you really like it the 1 litre bottle sells for around £15.50 so not the cheapest alcohol on the go but worth it for the warming spicy flavour. On the bottle it advertises it as 'A blend of mellow spices and natural flavours, easy to mix and smooth to drink' and boy is that true!!!

When I first saw the Morgans spiced I was a bit put off as I wasn't too keen on dark rum and had always associated Captain Morgans with the black label rum but a friend persuaded me - arm twisted round my back, honestly!!! - and I found that it had a lovely flavour. I had it first with cola and although it was nice I felt the cola covered the true flavour so the next one I had with lemonade with a slice of lemon added. This was much nicer so I think I had a few more that night. One thing that struck me was not the pavement - its true - but the nice golden colour of the drink and the smell was gorgeous. How many of us have had a sniff of a drink and thought it smelt awful? Not a problem here. It is as strong as Vodka and Bacardi though so do remember to be careful and not get too drunk on it although I don't think I've ever had a hangover on this so I can't comment. Of course maybe I just can't quite remember. Only joking. I've even managed to get my bloke drinking this. He hadn't heard of it down in Yorkshire as they didn't sell it in his local pub but I soon introduced him to it and he thinks it's really nice too.

If you are interested in the heritage of Captain Morgan he was a very successful 17th buccaneer who was born in Wales in 1635.
He was knighted by King Charles II in 1674 and became governor of Jamaica in 1680. I guess this is when he found his liking for rum. He died in 1688 but as the story goes his legend lives on. You can find out more about Captain Morgan and his travels on the captainmorgan.com website and it is very interesting to also read about how rum is made. Of course there are also details of the other products in the range.

There is also a party guide on the site and it gives you ideas for invitations, decorations, food and drink recipes. For example if you were having a summer party one drink you could make is a beach cruiser which consists of Morgans spiced, pineapple juice and cranberry juice or for a christmas party how about serving up hot cider with the spiced rum for a warm toddy or add fruit for a hot punch. The ideas are great and well worth a look.

I haven't tried these yet - as I say we don't drink that much nowadays but they sound nice and we might give them a try soon.

Hope you enjoy.
