Anyway, it was about time to see what all the fuss was about and the opportunity presented itself when browsing in a bookshop and coming across the Penguin Popular Classics at £2 each. Of course I was full of preconceived notions of what to expect. And largely they were proved correct, although there were one or two surprises.
If you know one thing about VirginiaWoolf, it's that nothing happens in her novels. So I'm giving nothing away - there is nothing to give away - if I tell you that the book is about Clarissa Dalloway preparing for a party one June day in 1923. It starts in the morning as she goes to buy flowers and ends in the evening after the party. In between we are treated to a series of thoughts, day-dreaming and associations going through the mind of Clarissa, and the minds of characters whose paths she crosses ...
Advantages: powerful acting portrayed by all 4 leads Disadvantages: may seem dated to some now
through a marital break-up yourself but it's certainly one you won't forget in a hurry. The leads are superb and were well deserving of their Oscar nominations - the film was nominated for 13 Oscars and actually won 5, including Best Actress for Taylor and Best Supporting Actress for Dennis as well as Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. Burton and Taylor also won BAFTA's for their roles in the film in 1967.
I would rate this film 9 out of 10. You have to see the chemistry between Taylor and Burton to believe it... Oh and if you're looking for the "feel good factor" you won't get it from watching this black comedy of a film.
NB: VirginiaWoolf (in case anyone was wondering) was a British feminist writer. ...
