British English not so British!
Advantages: Ease of use. Price. Disadvantages: Seems to like "scenic routes"!!.
...shop, I finally chose the Garmin Nüvi 255 to replace the Mio which I really didn't get on with. The 255 makes it very easy to select and save a destination, the instructions are loud and clear and the holder supports the unit firmly on the windscreen.
I have the voice set to British English but (to my irritation) "she" insists on saying, in an English accent, for example, "two hundred fifty" instead of "two hundred and fifty". I haven't used the ... ...certain circumstances, other Americanisms will creep in which sound bizarre when spoken in an "English" (i.e. not regional) accent.
Although I have set "Navigation, Avoidances" to include only "Unpaved Roads", the unit insists on trying to take me along winding country lanes and this in the area around my home which I know well and when I would use much "better" roads which are possibly shorter and quicker in the long run. In "Navigation" I have ...

Garmin Nüvi 200W review
Advantages: easy 2 use. good strong signal, always Disadvantages: no traffic lights camara warning. out of date maps. bought dec. 08, wont find :new: roads that hav
As a 100.000 mles a year long distance courier driver, a good sat nav is very important to me. updated because my old sat nav, at 3 years old, was getting a bit dated. OLD SAT FINDS ROADS THAT 200W CANT. maps seem 2 be way out of date. the only sat nav that i know off that does not have traffic light camara's warning. had i known this, it would have been the one thing that would have stopped me buying it. Good points? does what a sat nav is made ...

Sat nav for a bicycle?
Advantages: Effective, efficient and useful - reasonably priced. Disadvantages: No facility for an easy battery change of replacement.
...Well I chose Garmin as the manufacturer because in my view their maps are better, and their technology reliable.
I pondered a Garmin Edge 705 which is specifically designed for cyclists, and comes with cadence measurement and heart rate monitor.
Sadly it also comes with a massive price tag - around the £320 mark.
So I moved downscale a bit to some of the upper ends of the Garmin family intended for cars. Some have an inbuilt option to give directions ... ...suggestion ! - hence the Garmin Nuvi 205WT.
2 Nuvi out of the box.?
There is a craze today for things to be operational straight out of the box. I personally consider this to be both demeaning to the purchaser, and a denial of some of the real thrills of buying new gadhets.
The real satisfaction to be found with buying a gadget is in being able to ignore the instructions for as long as possible, seeing how much of the gadget you can get to work ...

Garmin Gremlin is back!
Advantages: gets me where i want to be Disadvantages: a little quiet
...unit.
I have the Garmin Nuvi 250, Garmin have a well established reputation for making good quality GPS receivers and many of my military and outdoor activity loving friends have them for use when hiking, boating, or even just a short ramble throug unfamiliar territory (though one friend has his soley to record the locations of his favourite pubs). So I had high hopes that my little unit would be a good product to use.
In terms of its looks typically ... ...a silver inset around the screen, the screen itself is I would say the most important part of the unit and is a decent size with no buttons around it - unlike my fathers older satnav - as it is a touch screen model. On one side there is a slot for an SD memory card so you can download new maps to increase its range, though stored in its internal memory are maps of the entire UK (and EU according to the box but I havent tried this yet). The on off ...

Why and Why not to get a Garmin 550
Advantages: It gets you where you need to go Disadvantages: Low volume, batterry life is short
I was so excited to get my GPS. I had been wanting and needing one for a long time now. This unit has good and bad qualities as I'm sure they all do. In the end it always gets me where I need to go, so it absolutly serves its purpose. Price was a key factor when making my decision and it is an affordable choice especially for those of you who are looking to have a gps for those once in awhile times. Lets me honest there is nothing worse then being ... ...read a map. There are two things i do not like about this system. one is the volume, even when I have the volume turned all the way up I have to turn the radio down to hear what the directions are. My second complaint is that it does not have an option to save the route. Other then these two things I love my GPS and sometimes wonder how I ever got anywhere without it. ...
