Pioneer Avic F500bt
Advantages: Good quality nav Disadvantages: far too fiddly with lots of wires
Good quality nav unit - locates satellites very quickly, dosen't come with a case which is disappointing at this price. Will work with iphone but for control only, no audio via unit or video from iphone. The built in TMC is very good but only works if connected to the gateway amplifier, if used as a standalone with the supplied cigarette lighter adaptor then TMC is not available, this seems odd as the amp and the lighter lead both supply 5v to the ... ...first year but you need a SD card to add them to the unit.
Built in microphone for the bluetooth is a bit weak, constantly having to shout.
All in all a good unit, but not perfect. If your vehicle has a standard DIN socket then i'd change the factory unit but if you can't then there isn't much better at the moment. ...

Show me the way to go home
Advantages: Good size screen Disadvantages: Noisey when operational
This unit is very impressive, fairly easy to install and set up.
You can change the background images on the screen by using a CD with some JPEG images of your choice on e.g. your favourite family photo which is a impressive feature.
The hideaway control box needs to be placed on a flat surface. This needs to be done so the satellite navigation knows which direction it is heading. The unit is very noisy due to the internal fan which whirs away ... ...is nothing obstructing it when you install it.
You will need to attach the vehicle speed pulse wire to the control box, you may need to consult a professional to find out which wire this is on your vehicle if you are installing the unit yourself. You will also need to attach the parking brake wire to the handbrake switch this will allow the sat nav and the DVD playback to work but only when the hand brake is on.
Find a suitable position for the ...

Better than TomTom
Advantages: Clear voice and visual instructions Disadvantages: Does not play movie DVDs
...unit and up comes the Pioneer warning screen which tells you not to use this item while driving (i.e do not input addresses or postcode on the move) you then press ok or even say ok which is even cooler then you can eather type in the address or postcode you want to go to in the address search or the postcode search you can alos use your voice for this by pressing the mouth icon on the screen (works for any language). It will then calculate your ... ...even set it up to show you the junctions ahead so that you dont miss a turning.
The only bad point i can see with this system is that unlike the Avic 900 you can not watch DVDs from it but that would mean that you can only have one or the other at one time.
If you can afford a TomTom go 700 then you only need about another £100 or so to get this system which also comes with TMC built in which gives you up to date radio traffic reports and will ...

Great Value Unit for UK and Europe!
Advantages: Cost, Portability, Ease of Use Disadvantages: Annoying voice, postcode search a bit primitive
We wanted a Sat Nav system that would cover the whole of the UK and Western Europe (all roads), and was portable so it could be used in all our cars. This unit fits the bill exactly, and was also very good value for money!
We invested in a few extra power cables and have had them 'hard-wired' into the ignition (instead of using the cigar lighter/power socket) which makes the installed unit much neater with no cables visible.
The unit is very easy ... ...tested on two cross Europe trips and numerous UK journeys.
The only issue we have had on two occasions is where it seems to get a little 'muddled' in cities. This happened once in Aalborg (Denmark) and once in London, where it told us we were at the destination but were in actual fact about 1/4 mile short in both cases. We were actually near enough to the destination that we could easily find where we neededs to be.
Do not use the blootooth functionality ...

Mio Moov Spirit 300 Traffic
Advantages: Generally everything Disadvantages: High priced updates £79 which is a lot for an occasional user
...this week (£60 at Morrisons),the mio moov m300.
Running through the menus is very easy and so is planning or searching for your route.
This model has lane guidance which can be useful at motorway intersections and complex junctions in the city.
The voice instructions are nice and clear and the volume is excellent and I also like the night and day screen settings.
I tried it out in my home city and asked it to take me to a fairly difficult destination ... ...that was planned by the mio and it recalculated to my new route almost instantly.
This model has navpix, this allows you to enter a destination via a geo tagged photo but in my opinion I cannot see much point in it. I would have rated this sat nav as excellent but unfortunately the price wanted for map and speed camera updates are ridiculous it would be cheaper to buy a new sat nav each year,so I can only rate it as good for the money. ...
