I am always on the lookout for small pet products for my house guinea pigs. Top of my list when shopping for bedding products is eliminating odours. When keeping small animals inside the home nobody wants the smell of pee, especially from a pair of boars!

At around £5.00 for a 14L pack, this is an expensive bedding material. On the other hand, the manufacturers suggest that it is economical and so I will only use half my regular amount. I decided to give the product a go as some of the product features are quite appealing:

• an odour control system
• dust free
• lasts twice as long as other bedding
• absorbs three times its weight in liquid
• heat sanitized to kill bacteria, mould and fungus

Do the features work?

I definitely agree that Carefresh has a great odour control system. The smell from the cage was not noticeable between cage cleaning days, even on a unseasonably warm March day! This was far superior to hay, sawdust and newspaper combinations. I can also say that the dust free nature of this product was an unexpected bonus. I hate the itchiness of sawdust and have read that dusty bedding materials are not good for a small animals respiratory system so Carefresh delivers a good, healthy product for your pet in this respect. The product was super absorbent and the knowledge that the bedding was not acting as a breeding ground for germs is good.

My only concern from personal experience is that, although this product could last twice as long as other bedding materials I am not sure that I would want to wait a whole week before changing a pet cage. I just don't feel that it is hygienic, especially when my cages live in my dining room at present.

This brings me to the limitations of the product. It is expensive. Whilst you may not have to change the cage as often, thus saving some money, this comes down to personal choice. Within one week, so two cage changes, I had used an entire 14litre bag of this stuff in my two Ferplast cages. This is the most expensive bedding material I have come across at £5.00 a week! I read the directions on the package and fluffed the bedding up to allow it to expand to the suggested volume but this just did not help.

Overall verdict

Carefresh bedding is possibly some of the best small pet bedding I have come across. It delivers all of the promises on the packet and ticks all the boxes in terms of odour, moisture, bacteria and dust control. I would love to buy this product more often for my pets but I just cannot justify the cost. The product simply does not stretch far enough to be value for money which is a shame as it is a great bedding material. If you can afford it, or have a small cage area then this could be perfect for you.
