I like beer, as do many of us, but after a recent holiday in Belgium I have come back a bit of a beer snob. The beer in Belgium (mainstream beer too) is wonderful, full of rich flavours and has a decent kick to it which is different to many mainstream beers found in the UK. I know you can get good Real Ales in the UK but I thought I would look at a selection of the more popular beers you can get easily throughout the UK starting with Carling.
The tin of carling I have chilling in my fridge contains 440ml of 4% vol beer and cost me £1.09. The tin is black and white and boasts that Carling is made with British barley and has been for over 30 years, the beer is made from 100% British barley and that the beer offers a complete flavour and refreshment for all. I will put the latter to the test shortly. The tin also contains nutritional information which initially boasts that each 440ml tin contains 145 calories then goes into more detail per 100ml serving (33 calories, 0.37g protein, 2.23g carbohydrate, 0g fat). Other information includes the tin contains 1.8 UK units, the beer should be served chilled (they have a little snow flake on the side of the tin that turns from white to blue when is cool enough to drink which is a bit pointless really) and contact details (see the end of this review).
I'm not sure if it is me but whenever I get a tin out of the fridge and open it using the pull tab it always fizzes violently. I try not to shake the tins wherever possible so I think it must be my girlfriend doing it to put me off drinking too much! I tend to pour my beer into a pint glass before I consume it so I can drink it easier. The colour of the beer is golden as you pour it out and creates a small but perfectly formed head. The head however always fails to last and just vanishes into the beer which I don't really like. The beer is fizzy and you can see the bubbles rising up the glass.
The taste, which after all is the most important bit, is where I am disappointed. I always remembered Carling to be not too bad, a bit fizzy but OK. However either the beer has changed or my taste buds. The beer has a watery taste which is very weak and has very little in the way of flavour. The taste vanishes from your mouth as soon as you shallow and you are left wondering whether you have just sipped from a pint glass or the washing up bowl. The flavour is not robust and only bloats you as the beer is so fizzy. I was hoping with all that barley there would be some lovely warm subtle flavours poking through, but no nothing.
All I can end with I was glad I chilled it as the thought of drinking this warm is not something I ever want to go through.

Advantages: Tastes good anytime - even from a can or bottle; pleasant taste, not too strong; can be drunk for extended periods without too much fear of excessive vomiting. Disadvantages: You're looked down on by all the poncey Stella and Kronenbourg types. Grrr.

Review of Carling Black Label Lager
Advantages: Refreshing change, not too alcohol'y tasting, 4.1% strength. Disadvantages: Can have a cheap image due to continous push marketing by Bass.
