...Carlton is a name/make I'd not heard of until my old toaster decided to give up the fight halfway through toasting a bagel last week. Truth be told, it was a bit on the useless side anyway, some ultra-cheap Proline job which got so hot on the outside you had to be more than a little careful how you manoeuvred around it after usage, so it probably did me a favour although it had always toasted well. I seem to remember it costing less then a tenner, which is my budget when it comes to toasters - lets be honest, it toasts bread - what more do you want from it? Well you might want bells and whistles but personally, I need something that toasts, so that’s what I went looking for...oh and something which didn’t get as hot on the outside as it does on the inside this time as well!

It is very easy to fill this kettle. There is a release button which you push and the lid springs open, and to close it, simply push the lid down until it clicks. The kettle has a removable mesh filter in the spout to trap bits of lime scale which are yucky if they get in your cuppa. The filter is easily cleaned by rinsing it under the tap.
The spout is shaped rather like a beak and water pours in a steady stream…you do not need to release the lid to pour the kettle (in fact, you shouldn’t as you may scald yourself.)
The kettle is 2 kW. Now I know there are some 3kW kettles around, which are described as “fast boil.”Of course, they are more expensive. My Carlton K2100 boils in minutes…how desperate are you for your early morning caffeine hit...
