Recently I realised I was finally running out of my favourite lip balm, so I thought it was time to invest in a new one. A while ago a friend introduced me to the squeezy tube version of this product, and I loved it, however at the time I assumed (wrongly) by the packaging that she'd found it as a one off in some obscure herbal medicine store. So when I stumbled across it sitting discreetly on the shelf in Tesco, I was pleasantly surprised to realise that it was not only available at many major chain stores and pharmacies, but also priced at a very reasonable £2.49 per tin. The tube version was £1.99, but personally I find those more awkward to apply, so opted for the tin. I'm sure the price fluctuates between different stores, so you may find it cheaper elsewhere.
At first appearances, this product would not normally appeal to me. The dull mustard-yellow coloured lid (not golden as it looks like in the picture here) combined with the serious-looking black print of the writing means it wouldn't actually look out of place on a medicine shelf, and could easily be mistaken for something you might have exchanged your ration coupons for in the 1940s! Someone I know actually thought they were having a practical joke played on them, genuinely believing the Carmex tube they were being offered was superglue! So it is definitely not a fashion accessory, although maybe this is a good thing as it will appeal to both men and women.
The small tin is about 2.5cm deep and 3.5cm in diameter, containing 7.5g of lip balm, making it perfect handbag/pocket size.
Also, don't be misled by all the French instructions on the lid - it is in fact an American product if you look closer at the two addresses given. Everything in French is also written in English, so don't worry about that. Most of the instructions are common sense and pretty self explanatory anyway:
Apply freely to dry chapped lips
For external use only
Keep out of children's reach
It also advises that the lip balm is not suitable for children under three. Here is my quick explanation for each of the ingredients:
Petrolatum (This is basically Vaseline)
Lanolin (Used to soothe chapped, rough or itchy skin. Natural product made from sheep fat. Some people may get allergic reactions.)
Cetyl Esters (Used in cosmetics to soften and moisturize the skin)
Theobroma Oil (Just a posh name for Cocoa Butter)
Beeswax (Works in a similar way to Vaseline, but better!)
Paraffin Wax (Also used in Vaseline as a moisturizer)
Camphor (Naturally occurring. Helps give a cooling feeling, slightly anaesthetic, similar to menthol)
Menthol (A naturally occurring substance that gives a cooling feeling)
Salicylic Acid (Basically it helps get rid of the dead skin to make way for new growth)
Vanillin (Can be extracted from the vanilla bean to give flavouring/fragrance)
Fragrance (Just gives it a nice smell)
So what do I actually think about it? Well...Firstly, the smell - yum! It's kind of a combination of beeswax with vanilla, with a kind of fresh tang, almost minty. My mum disagrees - she doesn't like the smell, and she thinks it's too medicinal. But I can't get enough of it! Obviously it's down to your personal opinion, but the majority of people I've asked to smell it are pleasantly intrigued by the unusual scent. Unfortunately it doesn't taste the same too!
Applying it couldn't be easier. Just like Vaseline, you rub it on with a finger as often as you like - no fiddly brushes here. Like all lip balms it will melt in heat, although even when I'd had it in my pocket for a few hours I still found it wasn't as sticky as others I've used in the past. In the pot it appears to be a pale kind of gold-yellow colour, and when applied it gives a subtle gloss.
And even though I've only been using it for a couple of days so far, I really have noticed the difference it has made to my lips. Although I don't have a particular problem with chapped lips, they definitely feel soooo smooth at the moment. I love the fact that you can actually feel it working on your lips, as the menthol and camphor give a delicious tingly feeling, making your lips feel cool and refreshed. As a wind instrument player, I often find my lips aching and in need of some serious TLC after a long playing session. After a quick sweep of Carmex my lips were quickly cooled and soothed, a lot more effectively than with my normal lip balm.
If you're interested then I would advise you to check out their website www.carma-labs.com. It's easy to use and as well as giving you a brief history of Carmex manufacture and a list of products, it has some fun sections like a Carmex quiz and a list of many famous men and women who have been sighted using it (like Carrie from Sex and the City!). according to the site they also make cherry, strawberry and mint versions, though I've never seen these in England, and 'Click Sticks' in all these flavours boasting either SFP 15 or 30 for your lips. Developed in the 1930s when the founder used to mix the product by hand and sell it from the boot of his car, popularity grew by word of mouth alone. Carmex does not use animal testing. The site also suggests you can use Carmex on cold sores, as a base for lip make-up, or as a moisturizer for elbows and cuticles, amongst other things.
So overall I would definitely recommend this product both to people who have a serious problem with chapped or dry lips, and to those who just want a moisturizing lip balm for normal use. To be honest I'm surprised it hasn't become more popular before now, as pretty much everyone who has tried it loves it! The unisex packaging and natural-looking sheen it gives makes it equally suitable for men and women, so you have no excuse not to try it!
Advantages: It works! Disadvantages: Some people find it messy
Have to confess I really have a nasty habit, some people bite their nails, other smoke but when I am stressed I tend to pick at my lips and this gets worse when my lips are already dry because of really hot or cold weather.
I have tried all sorts of products, lipbalms and vaseline but unfortunately nothing seemed to make things better, actually some products used to make my lips really dry or just create some sort of film over my lips without moisturizing ... ...work, I was a bit puzzled by the yellow lid and didn't think this was going to save me. So I went to Boots and bought one of these, "I might as well give it a go!" I thought... and yes finally I found the right lipbalm for me!!
This product comes either in a yellow plastic tube with a red lid or a little 7.5g tin. The tin has a metal twist cap which is yellow in colour and with black writing. You can read in block capitals its name "CARMEX" and ...

Advantages: Works well, convenient to carry Disadvantages: None for me
As you may already know from my previous reviews I always use lip balm. I just cannot stand the sensation of my lips feeling dry and use the balms all year round to combat the dryness caused by the sun and wind. There are little pots and tubes all over the place here in the cottage - in drawers, in my handbag, next to the bed - you name it!
I have tried lots of different lip balms and Dave usually buys me a variety as stocking fillers at Christmas ... ...ones, but whilst in Tesco last week I found another one.
I was looking to see if any of my favourites were on special offer and a gentleman reached across me to pick up a pot of Carmex. He turned to me and told me that it was brilliant and the only thing that worked for him, so I decided to give it a try. To be fair I had read various good reviews about this product here on Ciao and had been meaning to try it for some time.
The little pot containing ...

Boring Stuff
The pot of Carmex was the brands first product and is still its most popular today, it was created in 1937 which I suppose goes to show that even with technical advances nowadays, sometimes the old products are still the best!

Carmex is said to be made of three keys ingredients which make it so successful, 1. Menthol - This is an anti itch substance which also cools your mouth and stops it becoming irritable and making you want to bite or chew them further
2. Camphor - this is a pain reliever and stops bruised or cut lips from stinging or feeling bruised. 3. Phenol - this is an anaesthetic ingredient which in general numbs the mouth and makes the ...

Advantages: It works and is great value Disadvantages: Not fun like other lip balms
...wonder product. Well it is Carmex Lip Balm which is manufactured by Carma Lab Inc in Franklin, Wisconsin USA and was first produced in 1937 by Carma Lab's founder Alfred Woelbing who was a pharmaceutical buyer looking at ways to cure his own chapped lips. He and his wife manufactured this product at home until the product became so successful that they had to move production to a factory in 1957. And I can see why this product has been so successful ... ...back to anything else.
Carmex is a more medicated way of looking after your lips - it isn't just a moisturiser. It has a number of active ingredients which help to soothe and heal as well as give you very kissable lips. The base of the balm is rich and made up of petroleum, lanolin, cocoa butter and a mix of waxes such as beaswax and paraffin wax. This gives the product quite a smooth but firm texture. It isn't runny and you can run your finger ...

Advantages: Moisturises lips to the max Disadvantages: Expensive
Carmex is one of those beauty products that I just WOULD not be without. For some people it's their Chanel No 5 or their Touch Eclat but I must always carry this magical little yellow tub in my bag! I had tried those horrible stick lip balms before and all my friends used those little tins of Vaseline but I never got on with them. They were too soft and 'wet.' Advantages: Great for dry chapped lips Disadvantages: Smell is a bit clinical
I first bought a pot of Carmexlipbalm over 2 years ago when I was suffering from a nasty cold and needed some t.l.c. for my poor chapped lips. I came across it in Boots - I bought it because it looked more 'heavy duty' than your average fruity lipbalm, which always tastes fab, but lasts all of 2 minutes on my lips.
Carmex costs £2.29 for a 7.5g small pot in Boots, but I have seen it in several chemists and supermarkets. The pot is white plastic, with a screw metal lid in bright yellow. It has black writing on the top of the lid, stating the product name and directions for use in both English and French. On the side of the lid it lists the ingredients and company address. The ingredients include beeswax, which has softening properties and camphor and menthol, which are responsible for the tingling! The product is not tested ...

Now if there's one thing my friends know that they can rely on me for its lipbalm! No matter where we are or what we're doing I'll always have a little pot or tube on me somewhere, I can't leave the house without it! If I'm honest I consider myself to be a lipbalm connoisseur almost as I'm sure I've tested practically every brand out there in the past few years. So it's my joy to share with you my number 1 lipbalm? Carmex!
Carmexlipbalm comes in one of two containers; my personal favourite is the small white pot with a yellow metal lid. It's very sturdy and can take being battered around in your hand bag or pocket no problem and the screw lid also means that spillages are practically unheard of. It's also available in a plastic tube, very similar to those used by Blistex which aren't quite as sturdy in packaging in my opinion but ...

Advantages: Last for a long time Disadvantages: Slightly overpriced
Lip moisturizer and sunscreen in one, paid £5.99 for one, good price, as it lasts for ages, and a thin film over your lips is all that is needed. It is also very uickly and easily absorbed into the skin. A smooth texture which feels and smells great! (tasted a bit strange though, so avoid licking lips at all costs.
Claims to sealsin lip moisture and helps to prevent drying of lip tissue. With an SPF 15. Great for Hot british weather.
If your lips are slightly dry or chaps, it does sting slightly to begin with, but I find this usual of all Carmex products. Comes in handy click and use tube, much easier to use than it's lipbalmpot.
As this is easily absorbed I found it very easy to wear it under lipstick or lipgloss. ...
