I'm sure like me many of you have heard the old wives tale that the more you apply lip salve the more delicate the skin on your lips become and ultimately the more and more lip salve you will need. Somehow, like many old wives tales, I'm sure that this one too is true, but does that stop me applying more and more…NO!

So over the years I have fuelled my addiction and tried many, varying from the cheap to the expensive, from the sweet perfumed variety to the natural, from the designer to the own brand. And after all of this trying I eventually found the perfect one for me, which is Carmex.

The Container

Well this is where I think you can't go wrong a screw toped metal pot about the diameter of an old 10p and 2cm high. Small enough to fit into any bag, but large enough that like any rubber I've ever owned you never quite get to the bottom of the tin.

A white metal pot with a yellow lid with black writing, there is no gimmick or glamour just functional.

My only real complaint about the container is probably more a reflection on the state of my bag as the design of the container in that dirt collects around the rungs of the screw lid. But easily prevented by cleaning out your bag (or pocket if you are a guy) more than once a year and easily remedied by a quick wipe with a tissue, I don't think its reason for Carmex to run off and re-design!

The Smell

Believe it not this could be the point at which many will winch and decide its not for them. Although the smell suits me perfectly, for many it may be the downfall of the lip salve. The product is not so much perfumed but more smells of what it is. I'm not sure if the smell has been enhanced, but its highly likely that it is purely the ingredients forming the smell. In the tin, on your lips or the remnants on your fingers after you have applied a sliver, the smell is strong and medicated. A bit like the smell of TCP. The smell doesn't alter if you have freshly applied from a newly opened tin or have last applied 20 minutes ago from a year old tin. Strong and medicated, it's a smell that will either fill you with joy or repulsion, so if its not the smell for you, regardless of its other qualities, leave this lip salve well alone!!!

Price

Probably the next important factor in the decision making process, if you have passed the smell test, then invariably you will still have a budget. This is where good news comes. Although each tin lasts for years, the price is low and the quality high. Who says you pay for quality, some products are just simple and as such able to keep a low price. In a typical chemist you can expect to pay between £1.80 and £2.00 for a 7.5 g pot. Of course, if like me you shop in Boots armed with an Advantage card and a triple points day the price becomes even cheaper. Carmex is an American product and so of course is available cheaper in the US, but although less than a dollar over the pond its not really worth importing, if however you happen to be over there then why not purchase some.

So what is it?

Carmex contains antiseptic, thus as mentioned earlier the TCP smell. Due to this its largely marketed as a treatment rather than a lip salve. Boasting help for lip blisters, cold sores, cut lips, and lastly chapped lips, I personally still use it even when my lips are in tip top condition. I personally use it in the winter to prevent chapping and my lips drying out from the cold winds, then continue to use it throughout the summer to stop my lips drying from the sun. There are probably a few months a year when I put it to one side, generally during the more neutral months of spring and autumn when nothing is out there attacking my lips.

A thin sliver of the congealed balm is generally enough to last for an hour or more if you don't eat!! I generally use it 4 or 5 times a day, once in the morning when I leave my house, then a few times throughout the day then once again on my way home. But its up to you, its benefits are probably more when you are exposed to the elements but if you work in an air conditioned environment then you may well use it more to prevent the drying effect of the system.

If you are looking for something that provides a gloss to your lips then this probably isn't for you. The good news is that if you are a lipstick wearer then it can be applied over your lipstick and renew the colour and shine and may save your lips if you forget to take your lipstick with you on a big night out.

The product is non-descript enough for men to use too, without the flowery smells of many balms and salves or any colour it's manly enough to use and does a really good job of keeping your lips soft on the ski slopes!! And if you are caught with it in your pocket, the container gives nothing away and after all its more medicinal than cosmetic isn't it!

It doesn't have any particular taste to offend or please. The slave is however quite thick so don't overload your lips as you will end up feeling as if you want to wipe it all off again!

So incase you haven't already guessed, I would stoutly recommend Carmex to anyone who likes to keep their lips soft and moisturised at a low cost, without all the prettiness of some of its competitors. This lip salve is one of the best-kept secrets, understated, under priced and under discussed the product remains one of my favourites. If you don't mind the smell then definitely risk the £2 and try it. I am sure that like me you will still be using this 10 years after the first time you try it
