Now if there's one thing my friends know that they can rely on me for its lip balm! No matter where we are or what we're doing I'll always have a little pot or tube on me somewhere, I can't leave the house without it! If I'm honest I consider myself to be a lip balm connoisseur almost as I'm sure I've tested practically every brand out there in the past few years. So it's my joy to share with you my number 1 lip balm… Carmex!
Carmex lip balm comes in one of two containers; my personal favourite is the small white pot with a yellow metal lid. It's very sturdy and can take being battered around in your hand bag or pocket no problem and the screw lid also means that spillages are practically unheard of. It's also available in a plastic tube, very similar to those used by Blistex which aren't quite as sturdy in packaging in my opinion but do have a lip applicator on the end to save using your finger. Carmex operate with fancy free packaging that simply gets the product to your lips without over indulging on the design.
And so onto the actual lip balm itself…
The first thing you'll notice upon opening the pot is the colour, it resembles bees wax to put it quite bluntly as it's a pale yellow colour. The second thing you'll notice is the smell, it's quite a strong smell and is a mixture really of menthol products and something similar to TCP. When you apply the lip balm you'll find it's quite thick in consistency, much thicker than Vaseline and when it's cold you'll find you almost have to dig into the pot to get any out! The slightly astringent smell remains for some time and I often feel a tingling sensation on my lips when I first apply the balm - apparently it's normal! Once I've applied the balm it tastes much like it smells, only slightly weaker and unlike other lip balms it doesn't soak into your lips but stays on them for about an hour if you manage not to lick them! It's quite shiny and so does act as a light gloss for your lips but not to the same extent that actual lip gloss does so it can be used by males as well.
So what makes Carmex so good then? Well firstly it contains a property known as salicylic acid which is related to an ingredient found in normal aspirin, this means that it combines with other ingredients to act as an antiseptic and also has a cold sore drying property. The reason it tingles when you first apply it is because it contains a small amount of camphor and menthol which act as a cooling agent to calm dry and rough lips. There's also cocoa butter in the balm as well to add to the moisturising factor it possesses.
So would I recommend it? I'd recommend no other! I tend to use it about 3 or 4 times a day in the winter and a pot tends to last me a good 4 months on average so it's fairly economical. And who wouldn't want soft, kissable lips anyway!
