Carmex Lip Balm

I have started to use Carmex lipbalm on a friend's recommendation and I was surprised to see and feel how well it worked! I've always suffered of dried and cracky lips particularly in winter and even if I always was equipped with lip balms and spent quite some money on it as I preferred stuff like Labello, it never really had a long-term effect. Neutrogena wasn't all bad either, but I have to say Carmex was where the revolution in lip care has come.

Package
Carmex comes in a form of a lipstick, a little jar and a squeezable tube. The jars were introduced already back in 1937! All containers are in red+yellow and black which remind me of beeswax somehow. It gives impression of sth natural and good for your health.
Carmex original was lately accompanied by strawberry and cherry version - those I didn't have a chance to try though.
I don't like the jar because not only as a nurse I don't like the idea of applying the balm on lips using my fingers when I can't wash hands beforehand. It feels dirty to me so not handy when you're our, traveling or similar. The tube feels somewhat clumsy even if it's easy to use, but I have to push a little of the balm out first and then spread it on lips, that just isn't my way. So my favourite container is the recappable lipstick, it's always ready to use, quick and efficient and you don't waste the balm spreading it onto anything but its direct and intended destination.

Usage
The balm creates a rather thick film on your lips where applied and some of it absorbs into lips to moisturize and soften but a lot also stays on the surface and is quite waterproof. It won't be awashed away by drinking or licking your lips. Sometimes I apply the balm before going for a shower for some funny reason and afterwards I still feel it on my lips.
What I very much appreciate is that I can keep it in my bag or on my desk even on very hot days and it won't melt like I experienced with any other lipbalm, even if you can feel it a little less thick, it's far from melting. That I just love because a number of times I had left my lip balm on the wrong place in the wrong weather and what I found later resembled a puddle of sth.

Taste and smell
The taste isn't sth I would particularly enjoy, you'll feel menthol strongly in the mostly beeswaxishly smelling thick yellow substance. I can imagine people with sensitive skin could feel the menthol to be almost too strong as you not only sense it on your lips but also can smell it for some time after having applied it. I didn't really love it at first, but I guess I can say I have got used to it because I found out it really helped my lips to be softer and crackless.

Ingredients
There are three main substances used to "cook" carmex: Menthol as an anti-itch agent, camphor to relieve pain and phenol as an anaesthetic. Additionally lanolin, wax, coca butter, salicyl acid and a pertolatum-based fragrance were added.
Carma Labs, the producer, claim that Carmex is not tested on animals but only family members and consists of natural ingredients. They also say it's gluten-free, so much for the allergy advice. (I actually don't see a reason why a lipbalm should contain gluten anyway.)

Conclusion
I'm really happy I have found Carmex and it has become my favourite lipbalm as it cures all the problems other balms couldn't deal with really efficiently. I highly recommend Carmex for any lips as a crack-prevention, moisturizer or cold-sores rescue!

I bought a little pot of this in the USA - it was 88 cents! It's so much more expensive here of course! Good review. KM
