Generally speaking, I am not one to suffer from cold sores or sore lips and usually y every day lip-gloss does the job to keep them in condition. However, since the cold weather suddenly set in this year my lips have been an absolute nightmare. Over the past few weeks my lips have been sore, tender, very dry and rough. Almost like they are sunburnt. (But there has definitely not been any sun in my town for a little while!) Usually I just use a lip-gloss to keep my lips in condition but this seemed to be making them worse. So I tried good old Vaseline and a host of other things floating around in my beauty bag but not one of them helped my plight! Subsequently I went to the shop on a mission to buy something to help and that is when I found a little thing called Carmex. I have never used it before, although I remember seeing the bright yellow packaging over the years and I must say, I am extremely happy I picked this up. Here's why…

** Carmex **
Originating from America, Carmex has been in business since 1937 creating products that protect and look after the lips. It was invented by a very clever man named Alfred Woelbing and has always been run and maintained as a family run business. Alfred invented it on his own kitchen stove and used it to cure his own cold sores. How he managed to think of this is a mystery, but I think it is incredible that someone experimented with a load of ingredients in their kitchen and came up with a multi-million pound beauty product. Quite inspirational really. The creator of Carmex Mr Woelbing lived to be a lip smacking 100 years old, so maybe this lip stuff has a special ingredient we don't know about!

**What is the Original Carmex Tube? **
Originally, all the products were in little yellow tubs. In 1988 Carmex made their first ever packaging change and added a squeezable tube to their range. It is still bright yellow and has a round red cap that twists on and off. It is made of plastic which is soft and bendy and lets you squeeze out the lip balm.
It is classed as 'Original' because it is the same taste, formula, ingredients etc that was first created and it still hasn't been changed. This tiny little tube claims a lot. It claims to SOOTHE and PROTECT the lips by adding moisture as well as HEAL already damaged lips, including relieving the symptoms of cold sores. If it lives up to what it claims then it will be a little diamond in my beauty bag of rocks!

** So what is it like to use? **
The balm itself comes out of the tube very easily, even when it was freezing and I thought it would be quite stiff to get out but actually it really did just squeeze out. You are also in control of how much you apply and you can squeeze out little by little, which means you don't end up with a load on your finger that you have to waste. It also gets rid of the whole finger application altogether which I think is a lot more hygienic and practical. The balm is almost clear, the same colour as Vaseline but thicker and it spreads very well because the tube has a rounded head which almost massages the balm in to your lips. That really is all you need to know about the application, pretty straight forward really. Hence why it is called EX-on!
What I expected was a thick coating of gel that basically stopped me from licking my lips and making the soreness worse, but I was at my wits end and would try anything. As soon as I put the balm on my lips they did feel protected and very moisturised. Then about 20 seconds after I had put the stuff on I felt a tingling sensation on my lips. It felt very cooling and I felt like saying 'ooohhh I have a tingle!' but as the balm is clear people would have thought I was mad. The tingly coolness lasted for about 20 minutes and by that time the soreness and dryness had gone from my lips as well as giving them a pretty subtle shine. I was impressed. The instant effect gave me instant relieve and my lips were cool and calm again. At first I thought I might be allergic to the product but in fact two of the active ingredients are Menthol and Phenol, both of which gives the tingling sensation. They gently numb the area and act as germ killing anti-septic. Hence, why the tingling takes place. These are also the main ingredients which help get rid of cold sores. I am glad to know it is a natural product and my lips are not being filled with rubbish. I found the balm to last on my hours for a good couple of hours after which my lips still feel quite soft (which is down to the Coco and Shea butter that is in the balm) but the soreness was still there so kept applying. I continued to use Carmex and after around day 3 the tightness and soreness of my lips had gone and I could feel my lips again! I have kept using Carmex once a day to prevent the cold weather from making my lips sore again and also because it acts as a brilliant moisturiser. Just to add quickly, it does not taste very nice and makes you tongue tingle a bit if you accidently lick your lips… so my advice is keep your tongue in your mouth!

** Price and Where to get it from! **

It is a 10g tube which doesn't sound a lot but keep in mind your lips only cover a small area and you only need to apply a few times day so it is a great investment. It cost me £2.24 but obviously varies in different shops. You can by it from all over the place, supermarkets, chemists, beauty shops and even newsagents. So for the price it is a great item to keep around the house for when you have a lip emergency.

** Extra Information **
These are just extra bits of information that might interest and surprise you, you can find out more at the website www.carmex.com. The EZ-On application product is also available in cherry and strawberry which I will give a try at some point.
My little tube has a use by date of 24 months but Carmex actively promote that their products do not expire and remain safe to use for several years because of the natural ingredients. So don't panic if you do not use the tub this winter. Safe it for next year!
All Carmex products are Gluten free and not tested on animals (hooray!)
Although I am not advising anyone to try it is also known that Carmex can be used as a moisturiser for dry skin on elbows and knees, a good antiseptic for small insect bites and also a good thing to put on spots to help them dry out quicker. (I heard this about toothpaste as well!) Just passing the information on.

**Conclusion**
This really is a necessity for people who suffer from sore lips and has a real medical type use rather then just for beauty purposes. It defiantly revived my sore dry lips and kept them soft and manageable for a good few hours between applications. I will definitely recommend this to my friends and family and I am also recommending it to you.

Thanks for reading.
