I expect that there are many people looking at Wii games to buy this Christmas and are not too sure as to what will suit them best. With that in mind I decided to do a review on the Carnival Funfair Game.
I have decided to create a new category for Nintendo Wii Games - simulator.
As this game I'm reviewing today isn't really ... ...Strength etc (All though on Carnival Games they have their own names).

I expect that there are many people looking at Wii games to buy this Christmas and are not too sure as to what will suit them best. With that in mind I decided to do a review on the Carnival Funfair Game. I have decided to create a new category for Nintendo Wii Games - simulator.
As this game I'm reviewing today isn't really suitable to be classed in any of the normal catgories like first person shooter, action, platformer etc, so now it's in the simulator catagory - Oldchem has decided!!
This game gives you a chance to play all the normal fairground type games, there is a dunk tank, tossing rings on bottles, throwing balls at milk cans, Hoops, and a Test Your Strength etc (All though on Carnival Games they have their own names).
There are five areas to the fair (or should I say carnival), each with a few games, and unlockable super games. Take Alley Ball , if you get all the prizes necessary, you get a better version.
The prize system is something that should be noted. Each game has a criteria for getting either a small, medium, or large prize. Each prize is upgradeable, and by getting three large prizes you can unlock the grand prize, which unlocks the super games.
In our house the upgradeable prized acused a bit of confusion at first. Basically, you can trade in all your small prizes for one medium, all your medium for one large, and all your larges for the grand.
Ultimately, what this means is that there is absolutely no way you can't unlock all the super games. Even if there's a game you're not so good at, just keep getting the small prizes, and with a little patience, you'll get there. This is one of the reasons I believe this game was really designed for children.
On the bright side, there are other unlockables. Hidden in different areas of the game, and in some of the games themselves, are objects that you can shoot, throw a ball at, or just click on with your cursor, and it gives you a prize. When I say hidden, I mean that most of them are in plain view. Most of these prizes are additions to your "created character.".
The one thing I can't understand is thet Mii system already in place on the Wii seems to have been completely overlooked. I thought that the whole point of having the Miis in the first place was so that the Wii player has an avatar to use in games like this. Instead of the Mii, you can create a character, the character that you create is based on predefined characters, male or female, child or adult. You can customize them to a point, but really only in what you dress them in. You can only give them one accessory per body part.
The rest of the unlockables are unlocked by way of high scores in super games, and in tickets. The tickets are actually quite good fun. Each area in the game has a carnival machine that you can put your excess tickets into. There's a fortune teller, a grabber machine that's just as hard to get prizes from as it is in real life, a love tester, Push A Prize (that game where you drop coins onto a pile of others, shoving the coins at the bottom into the prize slot), and a game with a squirrel catching nuts in a basket.
The fortune teller and love tester are pointless, but the others do give you a chance for return on your ticket investment. A word of warning the Push A Prize game can get VERY addictive!!.
Now for the controls. They are about what you'd expect, with a couple of standouts. Alley ball works like bowling, but adds a bit more challenge in the way that you have to account for the ramp at the end.
Games that require you to throw, like the dunk tank, give you a moving cursor. When that cursor's on the sweet spot, simply do an overhand throw. Hoops also utilizes the overhand throw, but with a bit more challenge. You aim not by pointing the Wii remote, but rather by twisting the remote just right. It's a bit weird at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really great.
Other games require you to flick the remote, like a frisbee, like the coin toss. You'll have to learn to finesse your motions, or you'll find yourself overshooting, or more likely undershooting, your targets.
The balloon dart game requires to hold the remote like a dart.
Test Your Strength is probably my favorite of the motion controls. You have to shake the remote like mad to fill up a power meter, then bring it down in a hammering motion at just the right time for the full effect. The shaking is truly a forearm workout, and it's a test of your coordination to hit tghe right spot on the pad.
Then, there's your shooting gallery. You point, click, done, although I do have to say something about Shoot for the Stars. This is the game where you shoot out as much of a star on a target as you can, and it has an interesting little effect--the remote vibrates, giving you the feeling of actual kickback, as if from a real gun, and it works.
You'll have to really have to keep a good grip on the remote to keep your shots from going wild. It actually gives a level of realism that seems a bit too advanced for a game like this.
The only game that had controls that really bothered me was the Hole in One game. The golf controls didn't feel as natural as they did in Wii Sports, and though I've actually managed to get the three holes in a row, I never felt comfortable doing it. It felt more like luck than skill.
All in all, though, the controls are spot on. The remote was uncooperative very few times, and the reactions in the game are, for the most part, natural. Coin toss is a bit tricky, and I usually find myself under or overthrowing, but other than that, it's smooth sailing.
Graphically, while not outstanding, Carnival Games is passable, and even bordering on good. The look of the old fashioned fair has been recreated pretty successfully, albeit in a cartoonish way. The character models are odd and facially exaggerated, but that was the point, so everything the developers set out to do in the graphics department was accomplished.
If I had to pick the best thing in this game, it would be the sound. All the familiar sounds and music oare recreated here almost perfectly. This truly sounds like you're at a fair.
For multiplayer, you can have up to four players playing any game at once, and there are a number of games that lend themselves really well to this kind of competition. However, if you're short on remotes, everyone can share one. The nunchuck isn't needed at all in this game.
IN CONCLUSION
Our family thoroughly enjoyed Carnival Games. It's very laid back, and in a way, relaxing. It is definately aimed more at children in my opinion and I thinlk any adult who considers themselves a 'hard core' Wii player may find it a little tame. The Wii is the perfect console for this game because of the motion sensitivity, and the graphics are bright and colorful to convey a festive fair atmosphere.

=== Summary: A great game for younger children ===
Advantages: Low cost, hours of fun, good use of Wii-mote Disadvantages: Poor graphics, some weak games, some sounds can get annoying
...Different Games ===
The carnival is split into different sections (alleys). Each alley has a number of games where you can win prizes and an 'Alley Arcade' game which you pay tickets to use (tickets can be won from playing the games, and can also be used to buy items to wear) - you sometimes unlock items using these as well. You will probably recognise most of these games from your childhood days.
'''Fortune Way''' - consists of the games Alley ... ...I have read elsewhere on Carnival say that it is not a very good single player game and to not bother getting it unless you will play in competition mode. However, I would disagree with that. This game has brought me hours of single player fun, and there will be many more to come. Perhaps this is partly because I am very easily amused (and because I'm not particularly good at computer games) - and I have to admit I spent hours playing on Wii Play ...

...excitement of the funfair with carnival funfair games"
You can create your player from a very limited choice but you can buy more things once you have won some tickets.
This is a single or multi player game, with prize mode for single and head to head or competition for multi player. I played the single player game first where you play to win tickets and virtual prizes, the tickets you use in penny pushers or grabbing machines there are a few others ... ...these the best part of the game. As you play the game and win prizes you turn them into bigger prizes this moves you closer to unlocking the extra games. This took no time at all. I then had a go on multi player and unless you have more than one remote it gets a bit annoying swapping and strapping up all the time. I found this a bit more fun than single player.
This game has over 25 mini games including, dunk tank, and test your strength, hole in ...

Advantages: Loads of quality games, plenty of unlockables, sheer fun experience Disadvantages: Won't last forever, some unfair difficulty
...You can't go into the carnival expecting to pitch up a tent and hang out for months on end. Nope. Just like real carnivals move on once the marks have been sapped of cash, you too will leave Carnival after a few weeks of intense, exciting, but vapid gaming. However, though the game might sit on your shelf for seasons at a time, when the time is right and the wind blows in the right direction, when you and some friends get together and the carnival ...

Advantages: Fantastic gameplay, lots of choice, only one Wii Remote required. Disadvantages: I lost on Test Your Strength!
Carnival: Funfair Games is indeed games from the Funfair! It's fantastic to play as a single player where you can earn tickets or head-to-head or in competition mode against your friends. In head-to-head mode you can choose the games (from over 25 available) that you want to play and in competition mode 5 games will be randomly selected for you to pit your wits with your friends against. The game is quite easy to set up & only one Wii Remote is required ... ...one Wii Remote if you choose to and I would recommend this as it's save you undoing the strap and passing it over to a friend for each round as well as avoiding any 'accidental' turns taken for you (as my other half is guilty of doing regularly!). You can create your own character (up to 8) and this is very quick and simple to do. There are many games to choose from such as Shoot Hoops, Test Your Strength, Ring Toss etc and each one is very fun indeed! ...

Advantages: Cheaper than visiting a real fairground but o carnival glass or stuffed toys to win Disadvantages: Lots of practice needed in order to achieve any sort of score
There are lots of carnival and fairground games to try and each one is explained to you verbally so you don't need to keep referring to written instructions.
None of the games are as easy as they look and your computer controlled opponents will natuarally appear to be expert and high-scoring right from the word "go" so don't be disheartened or disillusioned if you don't immediately win any points or achieve the success of your competitors. Perseverance will lead to developing skills and the occasional stroke of good luck yielding better results and scores that will win you prizes such as new items of clothing for your Mii. Concentrate on the fact that these games are just meant to be a bit of fun so don't take any at all seriously.
You start by being invited to create a Mii. If you already have these then you may take them to ...
Advantages: Very very fun!!!!! Great for families! Disadvantages: Only get one controller as standard, some games (car games etc) are harder to play!
I LOVE THIS!!! I thought it might be a "kids" thing at first, but then my brother got one for christmas last year (2007), and I LOVED IT!!! Its great you can get games for all ages on there, the only bad thing I would say is that we bought the Ferarri Challenge game which is a car game, and it can be difficult to controll things like this, its more for playing games like Wii Sports, CarnivalGames etc. We have an xbox as well for the "serious games" like Grand Theft Auto and need for speed.
We love the Wii, its so much fun, and you can play with friends and actually interact with other people while you play it! Most games you can play up to 4 player and although you only get one controller with the Wii and the others are £29 they're well worth it, and games like Wii Play come with a controller for £29 so your getting the game free ...
Advantages: Fun, Different Disadvantages: Boring after too long
brilliant comparing with other consoles its great. Although I had traded my Wii in for an Xbox360 as it got boring. In summary I'd say that Wii's are good for parties, social gatherings but when you play it everyday it does get tiresome and boring. I would advise to stick to theparty games such as: Smooth Moves, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Olympic Games, CarnivalGames but avoid the shooters, sports games, racers and leave those for the better consoles: 360 & PS3. ...
