This review is an attempt to introduce you to the world of Detoxification. Argghh No I hear you cry. But wait and read a bit more you may be suprised of the benefits of this particualar Detox diet.

Carol Vorderman well know TV presenter always looks good. Maybe not in the early coundown years, but of late she always looks trim, slim and darn right sexy. I'm not a huge fan of hers, to be honest she made me sick. There she was with her glossy hair, glowing skin, glossy teeth or should that be glowing? Well you get the gist. There was this 40 something woman, seemingly getting thinner and more attractive by the month. She was always on the box. A constant two fingers up at me look on her face. I felt old fat and frumpy. Just how did she do it? Thousands on a nip & tuck at Harley Street?

I first saw an article about her in a sunday magazine. I indignantly thought
'hmmph, don't wanna know, thank you kindly!' Whats more I didnt! I left it for a few days until I was particulally bored. But curiosity did get the better of me. I read the article all about Carol's detox diet plan. I soon learned I could find out more about it by buying a book or video. So I went out to WH SMITH's and bought the book

'Carol Vorderman's Detox for Life' The 28 day Detox Diet and Beyond.

This was priced at £10.99

This book is 142 pages crammed with imformation about the plan. It is written all about Detox Guru KO Chohan's 28 Day Detox Diet. Ko Chohan is a leading advocate of Naturopathic Nutrition principles. It is published by Virgin Books Ltd.

What is Detoxing?:
˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚˚

Detoxification is a way of riding the body of its natural Toxins. Toxins are a substance capable of harming the body. They are naturally produced in the body or they can enter your body from the air you breathe, or the food and drink you consume. Toxicity has a habit of creeping up on you. General every day syptoms such as achy joints, vague pains, tiredness, weight gain and headaches are easy to ignore. You may put them down to old age and general signs of wear and tear but it is apparently your bodies early warning system telling you it isnt coping well with the build up of Toxins. Detoxification is a process that allows your body to help get rid of these toxins. Your body is responsible for getting rid of the toxins these are done from the liver, kidneys, gut,skin and lungs.

The aim of Detoxification is to give your body a break from the substances most responsible for producing toxins and encouraging your body to get rid of old toxins.

It involves Eating the right food.
Going organic wherever possible
Cutting out addictions, Yep cigs,coffee and alcohol!
Cutting down on food and drinks that add to your toxin load.
Include supplements and herbs tha tsupport liver function.
Adopting exercise habits, relaxation therapies & complementary therapies.

The Detox Book:

CHAPTER 1:

The first few pages are Carol's introduction. Now this is a bit of an eye opener. She rubs it in to start with, with the words,

"The facts are:
I'm over 40
I weigh myself once every 3 months
I don't ever count calories
I don't go to a gym
BUT
I'm the same size I was when I was 20- a size 8-10. I have more energy than I have ever had in my life. And I eat loads of food every day"

The chapter goes on with Carol explaining all about the detox diet, that its not about counting calories or fat units, its about being aware of the kinds of food we eat and are putting into our bodies. Its not about eating less, its about eating more.

The suggested target area for the detox diet are if you want to :

Want to lose weight
Lose inches and bloat
Change your shape
Get rid of a lot of cellulite
Stop feeling unhealthy, constantly tired, or sluggish

So I read on;

CHAPTER 2:

This chapter gives you an 3 real people interviews who tell you of their success stories on the detox plan. They all tell of feeling good losing weight . Between 8lb and a stone within the 28 days. They all swear by it and plan to stick with the detox. They each tell of revitalised energy levels. Which I admit is hard to believe.

☼ CHAPTER 3:

Gives you all the information about what Detoxing is. There is a questionnaire designed to help you diagnose if you need a detox. It is in the form of a ticking boxes next to the questions. It is strange however it seems everyone is in need of a detox according to how many boxes you tick.

☼ CHAPTER 4:

Gives you the principles of the detox diet. It goes into great depth of what to avoid and what to eat.

Grains (millet,brown rice,rye,quinoa,buckwheat)
Breads (rye,wheat free,pumpernickel)
Crisp breads
Water & Herbal Teas
Freshly squezed Juices

Nuts (Brazil, Almond & Cashew)
Seeds (sunflower,sesame,pumpkin, flax)

Detox Super Foods are listed they are, Apples, Carrots, Garlic, Broccoli, Sprouted mungo Beans, Lemons, Quinoa (( a nutty flavoured tiny grain), Papaya and Flaxseeds.

☼ CHAPTER 5:

Provides you with information as to when its best to start you detox diet plan. It also gives you a handy shopping list, which is very comprehensive. There should be something for everybody within this list.

CHAPTER 6:

This chapter actually gets int he diet plan itself. It gives you info on Drinks and snacks as well as a day by day diet plan consisting of Breakfast, Lunch and an Evening Meal. At the bottom of each page is a Detox tip from Carol. These are handy little pieces of information she suggests to help you stick to the plan and how you will be feeling by certain days into it.

☼ CHAPTER 7:

Is the recipe section. Devised into different sections of Breakfasts, Snacks, Soups, Salads, Dressings, Vegetable main dishes, Pulse dishes, Pasta dishes and Grain Dishes. There is also a section on Fruit Desserts and another on Juices and Smoothies.
These recipe's are usually simple to follow and are suprisingly tasty. An example is

Cauliflower and Potato Curry

2 Tablespoons of Water or vegetable stock
2 Chopped onions
1lb of broken Cauliflower
1 Tablespoon of Curry powder
8 New Potoaoes cut into halves
1 Tablespoon of tomato puree
2 fl oz water
6 oz frozen peas

Heat the water or stock in a large pan and cook the onions for 5 mins until soft.
Add the cauliflower, curry powder and potatoes. Cook for 1 minute.
Add the tomato puree, water and peas. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the curry has thickened.

This a particualarly tasty dish. As are a lot of the ones featured. It sounds a boring kind of diet when you first see the list of restrictions. But with this book it is genuinely suprising what you can eat.

☼ CHAPTER 8:

Congratulates you on reaching the 28th day and then goes on to advise you on the tips of continuing your plan. It offers information about eating at work and on the move. It also gives you a handy Eating out guide. Which advises you on what foods to order when you are out in various Eateries, mainly Indian, Chinese, Italian, Greek, French and Mexican.

☼ CHAPTER 9:

Gives you a nutritional guide and a supplement recommendations listing. It also provides a guide to essential vitamins and minerals. As well as a ready reckoner of a number of common ailments that can be prevented or alleviated through the detox diet plan.

Overall this Book is a highly informative in lots of ways to ensure you can stick to a detoxification diet plan. It does sound boring, but some of the meals that are suggested really are tasty. Its all about re-educating yourself and your body whats right to eat. I tried this 3 years ago and due to circumstances at the time was unable to continue after 2 weeks. But in my first week I recall losing 9lbs.(you can tell I chose to ignore the advice about not weighing yourself!) But using the loo with a lot of frequency. But this is a sure sign that the toxins are coming away from your body. Its just a case of your body doing what its being told to do. I followed the diet plan well. The only time I changed it was to repeat a day if I liked the meals on that day. In the second week the weight loss slowed down considerably but nevertheless it still came off steadily. Overall in a fortnight I lost 12lb. I do lose weight quickly I am blessed with that. I have recently lost a lot of weight by other methods (see other reviews! lol) But I am planning on going back onto this Detox plan the fortnight before my wedding. As the general feeling of well being and positive energy is truely astounding. My skin felt clear and fresh. I definately had a feeling of well being and people mentioned it as well. So it wasn't in my imagination. But then again if it was who cares? If it works and makes you feel good Go For It, I say.

So ok, Carol isn't so bad after all. She now looks at me with that knowing look..... the 2 fingered salute seems to have gone. I can handle her and all my little insecurities now I know her secret!

Me diet??? LOL I will just stick to my cycling and eating anything and everything in site... but who knows maybe have give this a look, it might make the difference in my cycling fitness level???? Then I would have to half all my winnings with you though for turning me onto this one. UMMMM decisions decisions
