Maths practice for 11-year-olds

Advantages: Plenty of practice, excellent value

emphasis is placed on the SATs tests that take place towards the end of Year 6 and that too much anxiety is created by them, but aside from this a child who is struggling may well need some extra help and practice outside of school in order to be more confident before entering secondary school. This workbook certainly provides such practice, and could also be useful for a more able child aged 9-10 who perhaps is not being stretched enough at school. In either case, a parent with a basic knowledge of maths could find Maths Made Easy very useful if they wish to help their child at home. A similar workbook is available for the second part of the syllabus, and there are also separate books in the series focusing on times tables and decimals. Carol Vorderman's How to do Sudoku

Advantages: Totally engrossing and addictive
Disadvantages: Swalows up whole chunks of time

and columns where many of the numbers have been filled in. Logically if a row/column hasnumbers 2,7,9,6,3,4,1,8 the only number left must be a 5 so this can be added. Where a mingrid had many numbers it is easy to add the few remaining ones. Carol Vorderman includes diagrams which show exactly how this works and is far easier to understand than mere words on paper. I apologise if my attempt at explaining the technique has left everyone baffled as I can assure you that reading the book makes everything clear. She takes you through a complete puzzle step by step using 12 diagrams. I found this very helpful to get familiar with the logical thought processes which are necessary to do the puzzle.
