By now, we'd also had cable TV fitted and I asked the carpet fitters if they'd mind taking up the carpet they'd laid in the lounge and putting the cable under it all the way around the room. They did this no trouble, and removed some of the underlay to make it flush, all at no extra cost.

Groan - couldn't resist the pun, sorry. This is a review specifically of CarpetRight in Stevenage, on Roaring Meg retail park - I have heard bad things about another branch so I can only comment on this one. THE STORE Big, warehouse-style shop, with huge rolls of carpets at the back and smaller carpet samples at the front of the shop. As well as selling carpets, they also sell underlay, laminate flooring, and rugs.
THE STAFF I can't praise one staff member enough, and the others were also very helpful. I think he's a manager there but I don't think I'm allowed to mention his name here, so let's call him "Dave". The store is staffed by two people behind a desk - not a standard payment desk but also customer service - they do bookings there as well as taking money - more like an office with a desk. There are also staff on the shop floor to help you with queries.
BUYING A CARPET We chose an Egyptian carpet that was on special offer for that day only, reduced by £2 per m sq to £6.99. For ease we decided to have it throughout our house, and for two downstairs rooms, the stairs and hall, and three bedrooms it cost us £750 including installation. Once we had decided on the colour, "Dave" sat us down at a desk and helped us work out how many m sq we'd need, by drawing a complex plan according to the measurements we'd taken. He made sure we were getting our money's worth and that any offcuts could be put to good use in tricky small places. He also ordered the underlay for us. He then asked if we had the metal joins that go in between doors to join carpets from room to room (i.e. he wasn't trying to fleece us by automatically adding them on to our order if our existing ones were fine). We said yes, and actually I bought some new ones from a DIY shop at a cheaper price, where necessary. When that was done, he took us to the desk to pay and book in a slot, which was available just one week from that date - very handy. However, they didn't have enough carpet in stock and he would order more but couldn't guarantee it would arrive in time, so the fitters would come back to finish off the two final rooms (of our choice) at a later date. The carpet fitters are independent of CarpetRight, so we were to pay them separately. Dave said this was how they managed to be cheaper than other companies as they didn't set out to make a profit from the fitting as well as the carpet. Dave's manner and helpfulness were excellent and we left the store feeling confident in our purchase.
THE FITTING The fitters turned up on time and were amiable, efficient, and helpful with moving furniture where necessary (as much as you can move it yourself in preparation, when you're having so many rooms done at once it's not possible to move everything). You have to remove the old carpets before they arrive, in preparation for the fitting. The fitters were ever so quick - in and out in about 3 hours. I paid them for that day's work and they would take the rest when they returned to finish off. In the upstairs bedroom that wasn't done, they even laid a temporary carpet (from leftovers in their van) as we had guests coming to stay in there. The rest of the carpet was very delayed so rather than waiting a few more weeks we chose to go for a slightly darker shade (barely noticeable and we only went with the same colour throughout for ease) in order to have it fitted more quickly. We booked the fitting over the phone with CarpetRight Stevenage and the fitters returned to do another sterling job. By now, we'd also had cable TV fitted and I asked the carpet fitters if they'd mind taking up the carpet they'd laid in the lounge and putting the cable under it all the way around the room. They did this no trouble, and removed some of the underlay to make it flush, all at no extra cost. The second fitting took no time (about an hour) and went as smoothly as the first. We'd forgotten that we had to remove the carpet ourselves and the downstairs room still had carpet in it, but the fitters just got on and removed it without a word and it was only during their visit that I realized and apologized for not doing it - they didn't mind at all. All in all a satisfying experience.
THE CARPET Looks great, isn't shedding too much, seems hardwearing, doesn't stain too badly despite pale colour (pale beige, with flecks of other colours here and there) and is soft underfoot. We've had it about 3 months now and are very happy with it.
RETURN VISIT So satisfied were we with the carpet and fitting that we returned to CarpetRight for laminate flooring for the kitchen. Dave recognized us and was again very helpful. He worked out how much we'd need, and how much underlay and beading we'd need. We left with all the right materials and a friend helped us lay it for free. That's been down about 2 months and is also very good quality and seems hardwearing.
I honestly can't praise CarpetRight Stevenage enough, and that is down to every aspect of the purchase being satisfactory or beyond expectations - good price, quick fitting, friendly, helpful fitters, excellent staff member, good quality product. As I said at the beginning, some of these things are down to the branch - "Dave" and the carpet fitters were fantastic and without these factors then the price and good quality may not have been enough to prompt me to write a review.
Advantages: Fast, Reliable, Cheap Disadvantages: None (at least for me)
After reading all the very bad reviews about CarpetRight I was almost convinced not to buy from them. But since they are the only carpet dealer in my area, I decided to go to the shop and take a look at what they had anyway.
I went there 1 month ago, the choice was good and they were having their summer sales. Everything had about 20-50% discount and the carpets not on sale were clearly marked as such.
The carpet I liked was 100% wool, neutral colour £34.99 per sq metre and also had 50% discount. I had all the measurements with me so they guy was able to give me a very accurate quote. I also had my own underlay and grippers and I liked the fact the guy did not try to sell me a new underlay by saying that mine was too old.
So I decided to go ahead and the guy (this is the thing I appreciated the most) alerted me of an offer in ...
Advantages: Good selection of beige carpets Disadvantages: Not a great choice of traditional Axminster type carpets and they tell lies
Took a look in the store opposite Reebok Stadium just for some ideas. A particular carpet caught both myself and the wifes eyes. We looked but a price of £40 per Sq Metre put us off. A sale price offering all these weird and wonderful discounts baffled us so we brought in the prowling sales man who had been hovering around us waiting for the kill. He worked out the price and the carpet was £17 per mtr but he told us the sale was only for another day. We chewed the situation up and went back the next day which was 28th Dec 06. Took another look at the carpet and found it to be 100% Polypropylene to which was something we had never come in contact with. Im more and axminster 80/20 wool and nylon. He told us the sale will end this day. We decided to go for it and after we gave him measurments of the room he worked out a price of £420 inc ...
Advantages: all under one roof Disadvantages: poor quality
When we first moved to our house carpetright fitted all of my carpets for me.
My living room is 22foot long by 12 foot wide, i had a short pile carpet with fleece backing from carpetright for £920 without fitting or grippers.
My bedroom carpet was the same carpet just in a different colour which cost me £460 without fitting or grippers.
I had rubber backed bathroom carpet which cost £280
My smallest bedroom which is 10 foot square cost me £600 because i wanted a nice thick pile as this was our nursery at the time,
total = £2260 plus all extras like fitting, carpet grippers and underlay.
I didnt realy know a lot about carpets at the time and thought this was reasonable but after about 6 months my livingrom carpet had gone flat and started to bobble, i wasnt impressed but put it down to having a lot of wear, the bedroom ...
