Brian De Palma's movie was so successful that we
feel like we have read the novel  even if we never
have. The simple answer is that this is a very
scary story, one that works as well--if not
better--on the page as on the screen. Carrie
White, menaced by bullies at school and her
religious nut of a mother at home, gradually
discovers that she has telekinetic powers, powers
that will eventually be turned on her tormentors.
King has a way of getting under the skin of his
readers by creating an utterly believable world
that throbs with menace before finally exploding.
He builds the tension in this early work by
piecing together extracts from newspaper reports,
journals, and scientific papers, as well as more
traditional first- and third-person narrative in
order to reveal what lurks beneath the surface of
Chamberlain, Maine.News item from the Westover
(ME) weekly Enterprise, August 19, 1966: "Rain of
Stones Reported: It was reliably reported by
several persons that a rain of stones fell from a
clear blue sky on Carlin Street in the town of
Chamberlain on August 17th."Although the
supernatural pyrotechnics are handled with King's
customary aplomb, it is the carefully drawn
portrait of the little horrors of small towns,
high schools, and adolescent sexuality that give
this novel its power, and assures its place in the

Stephen King as a college student started to write short horror stories and sell them to publishers. His first real short storry was to be titled 'Graveyard shift' and it made $200.In 1973 Stephen king came up with the idea of writing a short novel about a girl with Telekenetic powers, Carriete White was to be the name of this girl her personality was taken from two girls Stephen King knew in school both were bullied and abused the strong raw personalities were intertwined to make the fictional Carrie White.

Carrie was Stephen King's first novel, the main success of the book does lie in the film starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie who was nominated for an Oscar for her brilliant acting role. Carrie is probably the only film adaption from one of his books that he has been satisfied with and enjoyed as he seemed furious with Stanley Kubrick's the shining and decided to oversea a new version of the film.

Carrie is not the typical Stephen King book it is suprisingly short and is 242 pages in lengh. The story is split into three parts which are: Blood Sport/Prom night/Wreckage the style is magnifiscent the book comprises of the unique and gripping writting style that Stephen King uses is many of his later novels. The style used is executed with such accuracy and engeniuity at the perfect time in parts of the book, Stepehn king will write the story through the eys of one character, the experience and persona of that character intensifies and all of a sudden King switches the story to another character which keeps you absolutely engaged and intrigued to read more deeply into the story.

Carrie is a deeply enthrawling read and i would recomend it as the first Stephen King book to anyone to read the writting style and story is complex and deeply emotional i felt like crying in certain spots tragedy mixed with joy the mood changes like the weather and may suprise the reader in many places. The book does not consist of chapters which may suprise the reader but with a storyline so intense it will grip you all the way through. There are many different editions of Carrie and the price may differ but the nel version i have which is the newest edition is priced at £6.99 and along with all the beutiful new editions of Stephen Kings books they can be found in any major bookstore including WH SMITH and of course WATERSTONES.

The storyline follows the life of Carriete White and her mother living in a bungalow in a town called Chamberlain. Margerate White Carries mum is deeply and insanely religous and releases fits of rage on carrie and locks her in a closet, Carrie is abused and bullied to extremes at school also, the book follows certain events in painfully revealing detail. Certain events depict and experiment with Carrie's humongously powerful Telekenetic powers and certain peculiar and creepy events happen. The main abuser and tormenter to Carrie is a girl called Chris who has a rich daddy lawyer, her boyfriend Billy Nolan played by John Travolta in the film plot to humiliate Carrie. After the first fiendish prank pulled by the girls in the showers of the school changing room instigator Susan Snell feels deeply guilty. Sue asks teen hearthrob and baseball team captain Tommy Ross to take Carrie to the Prom instead of her to make it up to Carrie, Tommy hesitantly accepts.

When Chris and Billy acknowledge this they plot to sabotarge the prom and humiliate Carrie but only for the last time, eventually the big day arrives and all is well Carrie is looking extremely beutiful in the wonderful dress she made herself with special material Tommy begins to fall in love with her. The couple win a King and Queen competition which was rigged all is well untill........

I refuse to give the ending away but before the very end as this prank is achieved Carrie finally has had enough and sets out to set fiery vengeance on those at the Prom held in the Gymnasium what results is a fiery and disastrous rampage downtown, the end is soo emotional that mere words don't do it justice so i hope you enjoy th ending as much as i have.

On a whole the raw power and wonders that this book holds are so enthrawling and gripping that you will not put it down untill the end, the switching from one character to another style is perfectly executed, the structure of each of the three parts is blended to perfection with sub headings and journal notes to make the read as gripping and as enthrawling as possible while keeping the story simple to follow.

The ovewhealming sense of empathy for Carrie and complete resentment toward her clasmates binds the readers and toys with their emotions it's very clever, the sympathy toward Carrie grows and grows to a cresendo like mood untill it bursts and makes you weep. The way king has added a complete sense of sadness and sympathy for Carrie and when the Prom arrives roughly halfway through the book the feelings are so happy expressed acroo to the reader and satisfaction that Carrie is finally enjoying herself, suddenly when all goes wrong hatred and vengeance is demanded, the complete paralel between Carrie and the reader is uncanny and the moods of both are completely intertwined, a completely fascinating read.

In comparison to the film which should be mentioned as it's success skyrocketed Stephen king's career is much more similar than later king films e.g. the shining, the stand. The acting is superb and completely exceptional to that of the fictional characters of the book. Sissy Spacek's role as Carrie is excellent and at times extremely powerful. As with many film adaptions they're not 100% accurate but Carrie is incredibly close.

Inconclusion Carrie has been heralded as one of the greatest and most significant reads in the horror genre, the power of king shines all over this masterpiece, the emotional paralel between Carrie and the reader is horendously overwhealming it has to be one of the most emotionaly powerful work of literature i have ever had the pleasure of reading sob beutiful absolutely beutiful!

The Power of the Mind
Review of Carrie - Stephen King by Drooboy

Advantages: Well-written, gripping, easy on excess blood and gore
Disadvantages: Clever but over-distracting writing style

...we’re told early on that Carrie and her mother are both overweight to varying degrees, but with the mental image of Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in my head it was hard to picture them any other way. As someone who has seen and enjoyed the movie a few times, stumbling across a hardback version of the book in a second-hand shop for the bargain price of 29p made it an obvious puchase – heck, at that price any book is an obvious purchase! ...
...Margaret. Her father died before Carrie was born. The community is fearful of the White family, with Margaret keen to protect her daughter from the sin that she sees all around the neigbourhood, described in several painful episodes in the novel. We learn that Carrie is abused by her mother, who has attempted to murder her child several times. Whether this is to protect her from sin or to prevent the girl’s latent powers emerging is left ambiguous ... Read review

Don't Mess With This Bitch!
Review of Carrie - Stephen King by bonsi6337

Advantages: The start of a legendary literary career
Disadvantages: Graphic in parts, not for those with a weak stomach

...was not very much. Carrie was his first book (the first of many) and was accepted for publication in 1973 by Doubleday publishers. This meant that King would be able to leave his teaching job and be able to write full time, which he did! (end of history lesson!) The book I have is certainly not a first edition although it was the second King book that I bought (the first being Salem's Lot - look out for a new review coming! lol). The book is available ...
...name of Carrietta White. Carrie is a strange girl, reclusive and ostracised by her peers at the local high school. Things come to a head when she gets her first period (at the age of 17) in the girls locker room. The other girls are exceptionally cruel and victimise her for her naiveness (she thinks she is bleeding to death). As you read further on you discover that Carrie has always been strange. Her mother is fanatically religious and whilst ... Read review

Comparing the book to the film
Review of Carrie - Stephen King by stonea

Advantages: classic horror
Disadvantages: too short

...brief outline of the story. Carrie is a teenager who is bullied at school and tormented by her mother at home. She discovers that she has telekinetic powers. After being cruel to Carrie another pupil at school, sue, persuades her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom. The evening seems to go well but others have a nasty surprise in store for Carrie. They fix it for her and her date Tom to become prom King and Queen, then when they are on stage they ...
...happened concerning the main character Carrie white. I believe King’s intention is to give different sides to the story and also to make it appear as an account of actual events. The film is a pretty good interpretation of the book mostly. It describes Carrie’s experiences at school and her relationships with her mother. However, the endings are different. In the book, after destroying the school hall, Carrie goes on to cause loads more ... Read review

Carrie - The first book of The King
Review of Carrie - Stephen King by jeaniecz

Advantages: it makes you face the real world
Disadvantages: it makes you face the real world

...read (or seen the movie) Carrie yet?? I wouldn't dare to call myself a fan of Stephen King if I haven't. Not only it's his first book, published in 1974, the first of the neverending row of his bestselling novels, but it's nothing but pure horror story. I admired every aspect of it, the narrating, the dialogues, environment and characters. I think it's the characters that turned Carrie into a legend. The storyline The beginning couldn't be more ...
...Anything besides people's hearts. Carrie White is a loner, this kind of an unliked, disdained and occassionaly made fun of weirdo, part of that label comes thanks to her mother Margaret being a self-punishing Christian freak who tries her best to keep Carrie in her shell, for her own good, as she blindly believes. Carrie's just 16 and she's been going along with the mad mother for a while, she's accustomed herself to such a life. However, it's not ... Read review

Horror Debut of the Century
Review of Carrie - Stephen King by RichardW

Advantages: Terror and empathy, uniquely blended until you're totally off-balance.
Disadvantages: Nope - I'm stuck here. If you're at all interested in horror fiction, I can't think of any.

...is the central character. Carrie is a social misfit, a high school girl with no real friends to speak, with few social skills, and with a mother best described as a religious fanatic who sees sin everywhere. Small wonder then that Carrie is as maladjusted as she is. The result of these circumstances is a girl very similar to somebody you knew at school, the quiet girl in the corner who never seemed to get on. Therein lies much of the novel's genius. ...

When she starts to develop strange telekinetic powers, moving objects through force of will alone, the stage is set for a terrifying spree of supernatural vengeance, kicked off by the cruellest prank yet, an attempt to humiliate her at the high school prom. That particular night of horror has become legend, and you might already be familiar with the bucket of pig's blood, the unfortunate ... Read review

Tears For Fears
Review of Misery - Stephen King by  darkangelwing

Advantages: A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader
Disadvantages: Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character

...After the arduous ordeal of reading King's novel IT at a rather strenuous length of over 1200 pages, I felt that over the Christmas period I needed a break and chose to read shorter novels such as Down and out in Paris and London, Animal Farm and Ian Flemming's Casino Royale. But it wasn't long until I craved a good horror novel to read, especially at nights when Insomnia kicks in from time to time. It should be said that Misery, although moderately short in length at just over 350 pages, I didn't initially feel too inclined to race through it as I did with King's shortest and one of his best novels, Carrie. As an avid Stephen King fan, I know that too many characters in a novel spells disaster as King often spends the middle of his thrillers by flashing back to the characters pasts. Having have see the film years ago and considering... Read review

Good book
Review of Cujo - Stephen King by  jonty.h

Advantages: Storyline, characterisation
Disadvantages: Not really scary.

...From reading the reports which were given of this book from the media, i expected a brillliant spine chilling terror. I have come to expect so much from King from reading and watching such books/films as IT. However, it didn't live up to my expectation. Its a good book, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't as scary as i thought it would be. The storyline is excellent, and the description of characters and settings is superb as well. The idea is good and in my opinion, King could have done better. Don't let this put you off buying this book or any of Stephen King's other books, because it's still a great read. I will carry on reading his books and undoubtebly carry on enjoying them... Read review

Chaotic - But Captivating
Review of On Writing - Stephen King by  queen_rain

Advantages: Absorbing and inspiring
Disadvantages: Disorganised structure

...into a novel, focusing on the telekinetic powers of the abused girl who finally takes terrible revenge on all those who taunted her - the famous 'Carrie'. I loved reading about how Stephen King's mind absorbed details and turned them into 'Carrie' and other stories. Another aspect of his life shocked me. For a long time, he was drug-addicted and alcoholic, and didn't even know. He wrote one novel in which the main character was an alcoholic, created a very plausible characterisation. Yet he wasn't aware that he was writing about himself! The memoir parts are vividly written, often more absorbing than his best fiction. I was utterly enthralled reading about his experiences when he was seriously injured in a traffic accident. The detailed sensual descriptions, the weird little incidents, they are all typical 'Stephen King style... Read review
